Don't grind until late game. Take only the necessary fights. It's a SaGa game and will bite you for too much grinding.

If you need to grind, do not do so now. Wait until you can have maximum amount of unions/characters, and you have decided which members you want to use as your permanent party.
I'm only a couple of hours in and i like the combaty system and progression, the only thing i don't enjoy is the grind for material so union members can upgrade equipment it's fucking MMO tier and i only have two unions unlocked, can't imagine how bothersome down the line the whole thing could get. If only i could get a cute loli unit.

Then i should keep the units with their initial equipment? Sounds weird but ok, i will press on with the story then.

They will ask you for stuff. Give it to them when you have it.
Also remember to keep some captured beast to sell. This will grant new items being sold.
