Can you ignore any dialogue/quests with the pirate faction and just kill them later in the game?

Yes, but depending on the difficulty every system will be a shittier version of coalition systems as a result, because that's what pirate systems are. And if the pirates are set at any difficulty higher than normal they will most likely conquer most coalition systems before you become strong enough to repel them. Although if you really know what you're doing it may not really matter, just try to outfit one of each ranger-friendly base and protect them as much as possible. You definitely do not want to lose every science base.

I'm on the camp that thinks the pirate add-on is some mod-tier bullshit (well it is one after all) where not much thought went into having them make sense, so the balance and flavor is all over the place. It could've been much better, like Star Wolves' 3rd installment which also started as a fan mod afaik but is even better than the 2nd, official release.

Good to know thanks! I am gonna replay the game but I'll get the Reboot version. Is Star Wolves worth checking out or is SR2 much better?

They're different games, but being a storyfag I like games with campaign structures in general, so I like Star Wolves better. I'd say Star Wolves feels a bit more RPGish than SR2, better character system, companions, branching dialogues etc. All 3 of the games are buggy though, with the 2nd one most likely unplayable, and larger battles tend to become RNG + stutter clusterfucks unlike SR2's more tactical combat.

Thanks =) Sounds like S Wolves is not for me. SR2s combat is the only thing I really play it for. I wish there were more games like that.

Well Starsector sort of comes close, but it does not have big overarching story objective.

I had fun with Starsector but the longer I played it, the further it got away from what I wanted. I wanted 1 ship with lots of weapons and options. But it seems like mostly you have 90 ships and send each one to do different things, more like an RTS.
