Spore out soon

So who's all planning on getting it in a week? Any dire warnings from reviewers surfacing yet?

So far I've only seen mention of a couple of reviews of the game which were very positive (although this seems to be a given in the industry with these AAA titles). I'm totally buying into the hype this time and if it turns out to be another B&W-style disappointment then clearly the only answer is a murderous rampage ending with Will's head being placed on a pike. If I don't hear anything to put me off of it I'll probably be buying this as soon as it's out, especially as Clear Sky isn't turning out to be all I was hoping for.

I was surprised to see them selling the Spore Creature Editor. I suppose we can expect lots of micropayments and expansions in the works for this game. Milk it for all it is worth.

I pre ordered the Galactic Edition  I'm 50/50 betting on it being another B&W, unless they put more of a game in there than some of the prototypes show.

Refunded with the full game, but it did seem a little bit of an own goal.

I plan on getting it. I'm a big fan of customization, and I like The Sims. I'm also not stupid enough to buy into expansions.

I'll try to dig up the preview I read last week. Basically it said that the combat in the civilization phase pretty much came down to who could build the most tanks fastest. Not saying it won't be a fun game but it doesn't sound very deep.

Gamespy hands on at GC.

But you can make said tanks look like MUTIHEADED DICK as you destroy the infidel cities of ASS and LEG. I'm not expecting steel panthers.

We can only hope. From what I've read they were not too happy about all those creatures created to look like penises or weird creatures having sex though. If they were surprised by that then they must have lived in their own isolated world until now.

I'm expecting a light game with a bunch of minigames stringing it together. I think Will's early ideas for it was for it to be a "toy universe" for you to interact with. I don't have too much in the way of expectations for such an unusual title and I certainly don't expect it to best every game in every genre it may cross into as far as depth of strategy or complexity is concerned.

If it's a cool and fun series of minigames, I'd be happy with it. That's how it has been sold to me so far. I think I'll probably order this one so I get it on release day.

Here instead of playing an RPG.
I am worried about not being able to filter out stupid user creatures like animals made to look like Star Trek ships or furniture or whatever. Not being able to get rid of that will kill the game for me. Allowing me to get a new random creature spawn (maybe at the first encounter) would probably be enough. But I can't see how they'll do it, unless someone at EA is sorting the user creatures into categories you'll have the ability to enable or disable or something like that. I haven't seen this issue covered so far, and it's one reason why I want to wait and read reviews.

Members of the Spore community will be able to group content together into "Sporecasts," collections of similar content based around a particular theme. Players also have direct control over what appears in the game. When we started our hands-on session, before our first creature splashed down on the planet, we were asked to choose a "theme." Details are still a little fuzzy, but in theory the Spore community will be building content collections that'll allow players to customize what sorts of creatures they'll discover on their home worlds and beyond.

If they can't filter it or allow the user to filter the content to some extent then I expect every creature, building and vehicle found on all the worlds of the galaxy to look like penises, due to the sheer numbers of them that will be made when it is released.

I read somewhere that if you don't like a creature that spawns you can have them replaced, although it will require you to restart spore for the changes to appear.

Got the Galactic Edition here but can't register (due to un "unknown error") unlike most other people. Tried the offline part until the Civilization stage and it certainly is a lightweight mix of genres but it feels coherent in the end. For what Maxis tried to do with it it's more than okay so far.

But don't expect 5 stages of AoE, StarCraft or Civ complexity or anything like that. Cell stage is more like a slower, 10-minute version of flOw but with the option to outfit your cell in a nice way (spikes, speed, poison, turn rate, nice touches). Creature stage is like WoW (with a small AI warband if you like) but with social options and random stuff (UFO's, giant beasts, random conflicts, meteor showers, etc.). Tribal Stage is RTS redux with two ways of getting forward: allying other tribes or beating the shit out of them. The least impressive stage so far in terms of what you can create actually. Just got to Civilization stage and that's really abundant in terms of what you can visually tweak, maybe a bit too much.

Can't wait to play a proper 'connected' game with it though.

This game is going to retrace the exact steps of Black & White.

The sales will soar until people run out of content created for them by the graphics and gameplay team, and realize that all the groundbreaking promises were Molyneux-scale hype. Procedural ? Animations, maybe. Sounds, maybe. But gameplay ?

In B&W terms, it will take the same amount of time for which people were exchanging exciting forum comments connecting random flinging of monkey poo to an action they just performed. During that time period, Spore will have made enough sales. Mission accomplished.
