Description
In a realm of perpetual evil, a single stone could change everything. Stone Story is a western RPG where you don't control the main character directly. You tell it which items to wield and what location to explore and an artificial intelligence takes care of all the combat and looting. That doesn't mean this is an idle game. Potions and special abilities are maximized by good timing and boss fights can require quick item swaps if their pattern changes.

The game is instantly recognizable by its unique visuals. Its characters, environments and items are all richly animated in plain text. In this ASCII style, the artwork is constructed entirely of keyboard symbols, such as parenthesis, hyphens and commas. Lead designer Gabriel Santos developed the style while inspired by artwork from the early 90s.

History
Since its genesis in 2014, Stone Story has received a warm response--selected as a finalist at IndieCade 2016 and approved by the community on Steam Greenlight in only 20 days. It will be shown at PAX East, Boston, March 10-12. As the game is not yet public, this is an opportunity for many gamers to experience Stone Story hands-on.

Features
  • 8 unique locations to explore.
  • 8 epic boss fights.
  • An expansive loot system with crafting.
  • Mind-blowing cinematics.
  • All animated in plain text ASCII style.

Guess some codexer might be interested by this insane project.

Not a new concept. I remember Angband had an AI that could play the game by itself and which you could stop at any time to take over. It played fairly well too, could beat the game.

I like the text animations though. Always wanted more to be done with that.

It sure looks amazing. But I don't see a RPG in there there, and the gameplay of that seems like hell. Really, action-based gameplay in ASCII?

Yes, the game will probably be a waste of cool animations, based on the description the game is not action-based but plays almost entirely by itself, not that it's any more engaging.

This really is more of a Candy Box-like than an RPG - as of this moment I prefer A Dark Room but we'll see how it goes
