The reported combat retardedness makes me not want to get this, GOG discount notwithstanding.

Combat is no more retarded than the older games of this genre that it pays tribute to/emulates. You could do all of this shit in EOB, too. Anyway, as noted, combat was never really the the main selling point of games like this -- it was always more about the puzzles, traps, and exploration. It's all about managing expectations and knowing what the genre is about before deciding to buy it. That said, this is almost guaranteed to be in an upcoming Humble Bundle so if you're not overly thrilled with it (much like myself) just wait for when it'll be $5-6 packaged with half a dozen other games you may or may not like.

Bros I heard someone on GameFAQs call this came casul. Is that true and if so what exactly is so casul about it?

The context of the discussion was the puzzle at the end of level 9. Some guy said

"That's bad design to require the player to drag a skull around with them not knowing it would be needed later"

and some other guys were like

"Bitch please dungeon crawlers have always done that kind of thing to the player which is why most people never finished them except pro gamers like me"

but I kind think that

you would have carried that shit around with you anyways if you had payed attention to your minotaur's traits

but then again

you can customize your party so they couldn't count on you having a character with that trait in which case you would never have had a reason to drag a skull around FFS
.

What do you think? Discuss.

But how so? I mean, certain aspects of the game might be labeled casul like the fact that it's impossible to run out of food, or that you can rest anywhere you like. Does that make the game casul as a whole?

Oh and be aware: If you're playing the game in Steam, Steam has an annoying habit of popping up it's messages "Dickwad is playing some dumb popamole game" RIGHT OVER THE WIZARD'S CASTING AREA. FUCK YOU HABA. I DIED BECAUSE YOU PLAYED DARK SOULS RIGHT WHEN I WAS TRYING TO CAST FIREBALLS
..\steam\resource\styles\
change
Notifications.PanelPosition "BottomRight"
in both .styles files. valid arguments are just the four corners, though. no center popups. you can also edit time they stay open.

I just finished this game, and yes, the end boss is very cool. DarkUnderlord you must have saved in a bad spot, it wasn't very frustrating for me.
Actually it was p. easy compared to some other levels.

Or if you just want them gone, go into the Friends section of Settings, and uncheck 'Display a notification' under 'When any friend joins a game'.

I'm not sure I can rely on a review by someone who couldn't figure that out. Though I may have just lost touch with the unenlightened masses who cannot comprehend the will of Gabe, now that I'm just one step below Codex Steampope.

in regards to the fix i posted above, you still have to copy the resource folder to skins\pick a name here\ and chose it as the active skin since steam will redownload those stupid style files otherwise.

if you're disabling the notifications you might as well just start the game without the overlay alltogether. most people want the chat popups. especially in games that suck at alt-tabbing or have no windowed mode.

Chat popups are a comepletely different checkbox setting from 'When a friend joins a game'. I get popups when someone sends me a message, but not when Haba decides to open Dark Souls. Disabling those still leaves chat popups, screenshot functionality, web browser, etc. as reasons to leave the overlay on.

Learn2Steam, heathen.

they still popup over the casting area because all of the popups happen in the same shitty location and have the same lifespan. had he disabled game popups i am sure there would be something similar with chat in the review.

Legend of Grimrock was an amazing game, the level design and puzzles were the work of genius.
