In Progress Temple of Elemental Evil Storyboard - Chapter 1 - IRONMAN - NO RELOAD

So our adventure begins...

But first some self-imposed rules for myself on this run-through: I'm going to play this one 'Ironman'-style which means that there are no saves other than one main one. If someone dies, then we'll have to save enough to raise them at the church or carry on. Since the co8 forums heavily discourage actually playing in Ironman mode due to some single save potential problems, I'm just going to self-impose it. If someone does happen to die early on, then more than likely they will be replaced by another one of our characters from days of old. Also, I have changed the raise dead and resurrection costs of the game as it just simply did not make sense that at 225 gold it cost less to raise dead a companion than to neutralize poison or remove disease. For this play-through, those costs were changed to 3,000 gp at the minimum and doubling it per instance. For subsequent reincarnations or raise dead I’ve increased it to 6,000 gp per instance, then 12,000gp, then 24,000gp, etc, etc. to account for the drain on the caster.

I have never completed the game and only played the CO8 version 3.4 or around there till the second level of the Temple or thereabouts and this was some years back. The time before that I never get very far as the bugs prevented it, so while I remember some of the game, once I hit the temple and begin exploring it will be very much blind. As the story continues, these get a little more detailed and can be pretty long, akin to following an epic story and I plan to continue this until either we win the game or have a full party-wipe.

Finally, this was written for a group of friends that I’ve known forever and whom we actually played (I DM’d) the pen & paper game some 20+ years ago. So, the text in bold may relate to our original PnP game or just describing the game mechanics out of character. These original characters are taken from some of our earlier campaigning…

But for now, our adventuring party is assembled!

At the equipment shop is the most basic of equipment, but the attention to detail is startling...

After we buy our equipment, we're summoned by a Druid who asks us to find another Druid agent named Jaroo in Hommlet. Off we go...

..we find ourselves in the village of Hommlett

…it is night and we need to sleep, so we seek out to find an inn...

The Inn of the Welcome Wench… Within, we meet another adventurer named Zert and he joins us for a small share of the treasure we may find. We rent a room, sleep till morning and leave the inn prepared to start our adventure and find Jaroo...

... Until next time.

Dude, the idea is cool and I would follow it and all, but posting all images so they require a login is a Critical Failure. Try opening any image you posted in another (anonymous) browser window.

Shit sucks.

EDIT:

or should I say...

You roll 1 :: You rolled, ITZ happened.

What CappenVarra said. Also, you could reconsider using larger font - barely anyone does that here except in special circumstances.

Anyway, it's a nice idea to start getting out of the lurker closet by doing an LP. Fix the images and continue :salute:

Trying this again...sorry, if my posts didn't have to be double-checked like this in the beginning this wouldn't take so long or be so annoying. Once I get this right, I'd like to delete the whole thread and start over - just trying to get this working from my blog now... http://lptoee.wordpress.com/

Due to Xenforo magic (or Dark Underlord being a dick) you can't delete threads unless you pester the mods to do it for you. Just edit your previous posts and fill them with proper content.

Cool! Thanks for the help. Looks like I finally got this working. If anyone can't see the pix, then please let me know, but without further adieu, I’ll continue the LP…

Temple of Elemental Evil Storyboard – Chapter 2

[I'm realizing this game pulls no punches. The RNG (random number generator) is about as random as it can get and at level 1 you're only a critical away from going down bleeding. Thank god for the bleeding rule to -9 because otherwise we would be losing people left and right. It actually feels something like fantasy Xcom on a difficulty level between normal and classic and coupled with the Ironman-mode, this should prove to be an entertaining story. I'm going to try and always have the basic party make-up of:

warrior (Stallen)
warrior (Karish)
thief (Eldiritch)
priest (Kumari)
mage (Xiamaru)
NPC-Add (Zert)
NPC-Add
NPC-Add

So, if someone does die, I will try and replace them with a similar class and use one of your old characters if you like. I'll likely need to call on you to remember the details, but for now, if a tank dies, they will be replaced by one of Chris' dwarves, but if the mage dies, I'll want to replace with another mage-type.. maybe Karre? Or someone else who played a mage. Anyways, let's hope no one dies and on to the adventure...]

* * * * *

We leave the inn and begin exploring the small village/hamlet meeting the townsfolk and embedding ourselves in their day to day routines along with their seemingly endless tasks. Speaking of tasks, we do quite a few of those, fetching this, delivering that, discovering that there are two main faiths here in town – the old faith of the druid and the new faith of the church of St. Cuthbert (Eldiritch hisses). During our weeklong stay in the town we help both sides of the faith convert some followers to the other and in so doing help nullify some petty feuds and squabbles among the hamlets villagers and farmers. We find the usual shops and surprised the place has almost one of each – a place to buy weapons and armor, and exclusive places to buy leather, gems and jewelry, clothing and cloaks, scrolls and potions, etc. We come across the beginnings of a castle that is being built for two higher-experienced adventurers that seem to have installed themselves as the towns ‘protectors’ with no resistance from the town itself. Rufus and Burne (a mage and warrior respectively) have lodged up in the towns watchtower as their castle is being built (presumably funded by the recent slaying of a green dragon and its subsequent hoard of loot.)

These two fill us in on the towns people and also give us our first major quest – investigate an abandoned moat house as recent bandit activity seems to emanate from it. Feeling a little too inexperienced to tackle such a quest now, we decide to explore the town more and see what else we can do to gear-up and become more experienced. In our exploration the town smith directs us to a woodcutter on the edge of town who gives us such a quest. He claims the Deklo grove has been infested with some spiders of larger than normal size…not too much unlike Rodents of unusual size. The wood at this grove is harder than usual (that’s what she said) and with the spiders occupation it leaves the 99% without their goods. Time to send in the 1% spider-evictors! We take on the quest and prepare for the worst. To the grove we go!

Immediately, we were beset upon by two giant spiders, but one stayed in his den, as if to see what would happen to the other one. A giant web flew out of the spiders’ anus and beyond smelling something foul wrapped many of our party in thick, sticky webs. It then advanced while Stallen and Kumari, free of the webs, moved around to flank it. It was near death when its pincers clamped down on our mage, Xiamaru, and in one bite poisoned and brought the poor guy to his knees and then unconscious and bleeding out.

Eldiritch, trapped in the webs, somehow snaked his short sword out and dealt the final blow to the beast just as Kumari cast a cure light wounds (clw) spell to stop the bleeding on Xiamaru. The web that was such a bother minutes before suddenly fell away just as the other spider advanced…aww crap! This time without the web it was on more even ground and we brought out our big guns – Karish the barbarian. Wielding his heavy 2-handed sword, Karish has come to be aptly nick-named ‘Death or Miss’. As he winds up and swings that beast of a weapon and with his massive strength, he either misses, or kills the foe outright and in this case he finished off the beast in one fell blow, however, not before Stallen was bit and poisoned and the rest of us were still wounded and mostly out of spells. We needed to sleep… but it wasn’t safe here. It was too far t risk going back and stumbling upon some monsters so we decided to sleep….bad choice.

Undead shambled into our camp, four of them, and we were hurting. Thank Kumari and the god of death she prays too because her rebuking of the dead saved the day…or in this case, the night and us. The undead cowered under her unholy symbol and attempted to flee, but not before we struck them from the flank or rear and turned them to dust. Most of our shard-edged weapons did no damage, but those with heavy strength or blunt weapons had no problem. We finally rested up and healed Xiamaru so he could walk and went (fled?) back to Hommlett. We succeeded in our quest and sought more. The woodsman directed us to another old adventurer in the town who acted as sort of the captain of the town guard. He told us a long story about a Marthel, a nobleman’s son who delved a little too much into the dark arts, and in so doing turned himself into a lesser undead creature. This ‘monster’ now controls a retinue of bandits and monsters and has been seen advancing on Hommlett. Time to save the town and intervene!

Before leaving, we picked up two more henchmen. [A real cool note about henchmen with this game. They truly our NPC's and you can't see their stats or even their true classes or their alignments. They take 'shares' of the loot and they are all different. Some take all scrolls (scribe-types), some want more than their share, etc. It's pretty cool!] We picked up a man-at-arms named Raimol and a mage/sorcerer named Pishella. Now our party was eight strong and we set out to uncover and defeat this undead menace. About halfway there we were ambushed by bandits with a barbarian leader leading 4 crossbowmen. The barbarian leapt out from behind a rock and cut deep into our new mage, Pishella, who almost fell from a deep gash [a 12 hp blow! Ouch!].

Xiamaru begins chanting and after he’s done 2 of the crossbowmen and their raging barbarian leader crumpled to the ground asleep. The crossbowman up top was charged by Zert, our follower warrior and then flanked and finished off by a short sword stab in the side by Eldiritch. We loot the corpses and heal up Pishella and move out as it was unsafe there. By night we arrive …

We get in formation and move slowly through the bog, sometimes sending Eldiritch ahead to scout out as the rest of the party moves up. We come across a part of guards from Verbobanc…strange indeed way out here but then our quest benefactor did mention something about that city sending out a contingent of guards to investigate so not so unusual…

Stallen approaches their leader who is surprised to see us and exclaims there is nothing to see here and to go back the way we came. He insists on escorting us to whom we reply, ‘Nope, we’re here to check this out and your way out of your jurisdiction’ or close to it, pretty brave for a rag-tag group of ours to a unit of guards…maybe I embellish. Either way, after the third insisting demand and the third time denying them they all simply vanished into thin air… poof!

We advance and not long into the muck do we get advanced upon by a pack of kobolds. Karish ‘Death or Miss’ connects with a few and they go down in one blow as they often take two or more hits from the rest of us. Stallen breaks out the mandolin and strums a little diddy to encourage the ranks [this is the red glow all of us have - inspire courage +1 to hit and damage] and we go to town on the feral lizards.

We didn’t really get hurt during the melee and move ahead where we found an area of raised huts and ramshackle village of sorts Just as we approached the middle of it, the huts erupted with shrieks and cries as goblins came rushing forth. Thank god the troops were still inspired by the bards music as we quickly moved into a protective formation of the clothes casters and prepared for the worst. They kept coming!

This was our first really big fight and thank god it was against lowly goblins. It started off good until they kept coming and they were led by a goblin leader. Spell casters quickly went to work and slept some of them and another caster greased the ground causing many to fall down which were quickly dispatched by Eldiritch. Speaking of which, this thief, Eldiritch really shined this fight as he would dart in and out of combat and get flank attacks on many of these goblins with a couple causing critical hits and killing outright the goblins. Karish handled the goblin leader solo but raged and actually did 18 points to the guy in one swoop of his mighty sword. Stallen was more defensive and fought that way with shield and helped Eldiritch quickly dispatch the sleeping goblins and ones that fell in the grease. The followers did well too and provided defensive cover to the casters and dispatched some of their own too. After the battle was over we encountered one lone goblin who chose not to fight but instead help us – smart little fellow.

We were out of spells, tired, bruised, battered and bloody. We also looted all the fallen goblins and needed to sell. It was decided it would be best to return to Hommlett and sell and recoup, and then come back to advance deeper into the swamp. We all became encumbered with the goblin loot and moved out dreading a random encounter…sure enough we got one.

Two hobgoblin and their wolves. This was going to be a tough fight [notice the silver/metal bars in the bottom right of all of our portraits denoting medium encumbered - ouch!] Eldiritch was the first to react and charged the nearest wolf hitting the flat-footed beast bot only lightly wounding it. Stallen played his little diddy, ‘Let’s Kick Some Ass!’ and defended. Unfortunately, before the rest of us could move, the hobgoblins and the wolves all pounced on the thief, and while the first three blows missed, one hobgoblin moved to his rear and stuck his spear almost clear through Eldiritch [He critted for 12 points of damage causing immediate bleeding and to be at -5]. As Eldiritch slumped to the ground Karish bellowed out a mighty wail and charged the hobgoblin whose back was to him and almost cleaved him in two, killing him instantly. Zert the follower charged as well and dispatched the wounded wolf. Even the man-at-arms, Ranoil charged in to take any attention away from the fallen thief lest they coup-de-grace him. Kumari was prepared and using her gods’ power healed the thief to stop the bleeding although he was still disabled. The last wolf and hobgoblin quickly fell the next round and Eldiritch was healed a bit more to be able to walk. He was told just how close to death he came and laughed it off.

The group limped back to Hommlett and felt wiser with that last fast, somehow better. They decided to train up and rest before heading back to the swamps and of course sell off their loot. So far so good, some close calls, but overall, a good team…but will it last?

[Next time... Level-up! WOOT! We all got a level (not the followers) so next we meet, we advance ourselves and delve back deeper into the bog. Stay tuned for Chapter 3!]

Chapter 3

[So, on par with the challenge of the Ironman-style run-through it wouldn’t make much sense to save your game and reload your level-up hit points so whatever we get, we keep, even if it’s a one. On that note, it felt a little thrilling and I was left happy that we all got pretty good rolls on our level-up. They were as follows:

Eldiritch 7hp to 13hp
Karish 15hp to 24hp
Stallen 8hp to 15hp
Xiamaru 5hp to 9hp
Kumari 7hp to 13hp

In this adventure, we explore the rest of the Welkwood bog and complete the quest and journey back to Hommlet not without our fair share of close calls and adventure. Did someone die? Did we find our first magic item? Did Stallen catch syphilis from the farmer’s daughter? Read on and find out! ]

* * * * *

We trained a good few days back in Hommlet, learning a great deal from our previous adventures and escapades. It’s surprising what you could learn from simply delivering some flour from the miller to the Church of St. Cuthbert… who knew?! Regardless, we all felt a little stronger, wiser, better at certain skills, but most of all, better prepared to finish this Welkwood Bog mystery. We setup a good a good formation with our new party and hoped this would protect us from any wandering encounters we might face on the journey. We left early morning and travelled non-stop to our destination and arrived at night; not the ideal time to show up in a haunted swamp.

We journey through the swamp past the goblin village through a copse of trees into an opening where we heard some very loud sounds of a large humanoid type. We swore the ground shook as something walked our way. We sent the rogue, Eldiritch, hidden in shadows ahead to investigate and so he did…

He was making his rounds, doing a sweep, when from behind a rock came a giant hulking figure….

Eldiritch gulped and motioned to the rest of the group the large, hulking figure slowly shambling there way. Karish, not one for theatrics, or importantly, fear, loosed an arrow at the giant as Eldiritch eyes grew huge for he was first in the giants path of anger. No sooner did Eldiritch turn to run that the arrow landed into….the ground….right through the giant! ‘Huh!? What is this trickery!’ cried Eldiritch. We all approached the giant en masse and he engaged us. ‘DIE!’ Shouted the beast. Some of us wanted to flee, but the majority of us knew this to be some illusion, just like those Verbobanc guards.

Upon telling the giant to buzz off three times he disappeared, just like the guards from earlier. Hah! Another shade to instill fear in us? There were some stairs leading down into what may have been a cellar or some dungeon under a stone home that was on the verge of collapse. We heard some squeaks and grunts from below so expected the worst. We readied our arms and entered the fray…

6 kobolds greeted us, although most were stunned by our arrival. Karish charged in and slayed one with a full swing of his mighty sword. Xiamaru put to sleep the others as Eldiritch charged ahead with what we swore was a smile on his face as he cut the throats of the sleeping kobolds. [The combat detail in this game is borderline insane. The tactics are full tilt and it’s the closest to playing a tabletop game that you can get. Trip attack, full attack, half-attack, 5-foot step to get out of melee, fighting defensively, all the feats, skills, etc of 3.5 are implemented including ‘coup-de-grace’ an attack on a sleeping opponent that will outright kill them in one action/attack. Yes, this can happen to us too!] As we advanced we saw another set of the lizard-like beasts, but some of these were armed with crossbows; time to charge them and put them down quickly. Arrows and bolts flew through the air and nailed a coupled of the beasts while the melee fighters advanced and put down the archers.

We were in a great chamber with some stone pedestal taking up most of it with two doors on either side of it. We chose the door the beasts seemed to guard and sent the thief ahead to scout. He uncovered…

Our mission goal was ahead of us in this next room. We knew we would have our toughest fight in front of us. A gnoll, a skeleton gnoll, a kobold sergeant, a goblin leader and of course Lord Mathel himself- this should prove…interesting. Eldiritch hid in shadows and snuck into the room, blending into the wall and prepared to sneak attack the gnoll when combat started. The mages stayed back and in front of them a loose defensive screen of Zert and Stallen. Karish was frothing at the mouth, having already worked himself into a rage and charged ahead just as the grease spell went off tripping Lord Mathel. Stallen broke out the mandolin and strummed, ‘Let’s kick a little goblin asssssss. Yeah!’ and we all began the battle of our lives…

The skeleton gnoll charged Karish and connected with his weapon which drew the ire of the barbarian. Zert charged the gnoll and cut a deep slash through his arm just as Eldiritch leapt out of the shadows and plunged his short sword deep into the gnolls back; bring the beast to its knees, but not killing it. The gnoll was near death and joined by the kobold sergeant just as we lost track of the goblin leader.

The goblin leader came out of the shadows having passed our defensive line and appeared right in front of our mages. Uh-oh! Pishella stepped back 5’ out of the goblins reach and began the incarnations of a spell just as Kumari brought out her symbol of her god and attempted to turn the undead. Pishella’s spell went off and the goblins eyes glazed over…he was under our control!

The skeleton gnoll made an unearthly noise and immediately attempted to flee the battle as best yet, Lord Mathel, the undead supposed-lich that we were on this quest for, fell under the full command of Kumari and her god. This battle was going well! The rest of the battle became routine as we finished of the gnoll, ordered Lord Mathel to battle his own kobold sergeant, and the charmed goblin leader even helped. I couldn’t have imagined things going better. We watched as they fought themselves, whittling them down and when only Lord Mathel was left and a near death goblin leader, Karish sung his giant sword overhead and killed the goblin leader with glazed, blank eyes still staring lovingly at Pishella. We took this Mathel, for he was no longer a lord, and we led him to the other room in which we never entered. Inside, a locked chest to which Eldiritch checked for traps and unlocked. We stuck Mathel in a corner as we looted his belongings and stash….it was sort of saddening as he just stood there as we filled our pouches and packs with his ill-gotten loot.

After looting the stash from the chest and moving out we wondered what to do with the undead follower. Surely he would break his trance at some point. As we thought it over and began to dispute it among ourselves which led to a heated argument of nature v. nurture among Stallen and Xiamaru, Karish unsheathed his sword and sliced the zombie almost in two. A great puff of smoke and a small fire was left and only ashes where the thing once stood. ‘Problem solved,’ muttered the barbarian.

Our quest was finished. We only had a long travel back to town and of course the wandering encounters we may face. We decided it best to rest and recover our spells even though we ran the risk of having such an encounter here. Battle here with no spells or battle outside in foreign terrain with no spells – we chose here. Bad choice. During our slumber we were stumbled upon by a pack of dire rats. Squueeeek!!!

They were everywhere. We needed to protect the mages, so we focused on them first. Stallen began his little diddy, ‘Let’s kill ourselves some RATSSSsssss….yeaaahhh—uh-HUH!’ and everyone felt more inclined to fight. Karish was bit along with Raimol the man-at-arms, but thankfully we didn’t take much damage and quickly dispatched the troop of rats.

We attempted to sleep again, in better cover, and succeeded. We left the next morning and journeyed back to town, thanking all our gods that we weren’t found by some wandering monsters. Upon entering town, Karish complained of lack of breath, nausea, and even began vomiting. He was looking deathly ill when we discovered he much have been infected by one of the rats. Sure enough, Stallen, with his survival skill, realized he was afflicted with filth fever and we needed a cure. It was sapping away his strength and dexterity and there was no end in sight. We only knew of one solution and it was going to be an expensive one – the church of St. Cuthbert. We took him there and sought help…

‘240 gold pieces!? That’s more than our loot! Let him die,’ exclaimed Eldiritch, but the group majority held out and we paid the huge sum. He was cured and we needed a new source of income now for we were destitute once more. Maybe the old town guard would have a reward for us? We sought him out and told him of our exploits.

Not bad, not bad. We still needed to increase our money supply for scrolls were outrageously expensive and we had magic-hungry members needing them. We also sought the satiating taste of adventure and needed our next thrill…what would we do? Those two lords of this town asked us to seek out the moat house and dispose of any bandits we encountered. Having just dispatched what we did in such short fashion we thought ourselves pretty tough. Yes, I think the moat house will indeed have a meeting with us…and soon.

* * * * *

[Next time... we sell what little loot we got from the Welkwood Bog and gear-up for the invasion of the moat house. This is really reminding me of our adventure of old and it was here, in the moat house, where we lost many characters and had such an ass-kicking that we /you guys, fled back to Hommlet with your tail tucked between your legs and barely alive. Those that couldn’t make it made meals to the undead… Stay tuned for Chapter 4!]

Good LP!
...without further adieu, I’ll continue the LP…
 Was this an intentional nod to Matt Chat or an eggcorn? Or both?

Hehehe, When I typed that it showed up in Word as wrong, but in life I've always done it that way without ever having been corrected...guess I'm stuck in my ways, heeh :) In other news, I wiki'd eggcorn and feel much wiser because of that, so thank you.

Finally... I AM UNSHACKLED!!! No more having to wait for moderator approval...weeeeeeee

Chapter 4

[It goes without saying that this ‘Let’s Play’ version of TOEE is full of spoilers, obviously, so if anyone had any intentions of playing the game then to be warned. Maybe this should have been mentioned the first Chapter, but I’m sort of doing it for myself so after the attempt, if I even make it, I can string them all together and make a full story out of it to read later or post in the circle of eight forums. Sharing with everyone is only a bonus and one that I think many of you would like. With that, this adventure follows our intrepid party as we leave Hommlet and adventure for the first time to the moat house and investigate this bandit activity. As per the norm, it is full of battle, adventure, tactics, and loot! This is also where our PnP game had stopped due to a ‘party-wipe’ or close to it. Enjoy!]

* * * * *

This time it didn’t take long for us to prepare for the moat house trek. It was closer than the Welkwood Bog and we had nothing to sell and didn’t feel ready to train yet. Stallen could have stayed a little longer in the Welcome Wench earning some extra coin playing ballads and gambling, but quests and adventure awaited us, and these could provide new material for songs. We suited up and journeyed out in our typical formation with warriors in front, mage-types in the middle and even a rear defense line to protect the squishy cloth-casters in case of ambush. Day and night we walked the less-travelled road till we were only a few hours away when Zert [who is training up in Ranger] stumbled upon some undead shambling through the grassy fields. For once, we were given the option of what to do…

Four zombies? We had never encountered these undead yet and it might be a good time to sharpen our teeth with them in a battle of our choosing, plus we had Kumari with us who was quickly becoming our ‘ace in the hole’ whenever we encountered them. To Arms!!!

[A little taste of the level of tactical opportunity. It uses a radial menu that branches out and opens up many more options the deeper you go. The initiative roll-out is listed up top in the order we all rolled and how we all will react and as you can see our mage/sorcerer, Pishella, rolled high and went first, followed by Karish, Eldiritch, Stallen, etc. Pishella decides to ‘ready vs. approach’ which means that if something enters her melee range that she will get her action first even during their turn. In a turn-based setting, this works flawlessly to setup and carry-through some great tactical decisions helping win many battles.]

‘Form a line and protect the casters!’ shouted Stallen, as all the warriors rushed the zombies and began hacking and slashing the shambling dead. Some of our weapons had a hard time piercing their tough, leathery skin, but for others with massive strength behind their blows, it was no problem. Kumari, unholy symbol at the ready, shouted her god’s name and the zombies immediately dropped their guard and looked to escape. They cowered from our blows and from us, which made dispatching them easy.

We searched the dead for loot, but they had none and since no spells were used or anyone hurt we decided to carry on. We arrived at the moat house around midday and prepared for the worst…

A road cut through the bog and from beyond, the ruins of a castle fortification. We moved ahead slowly walking a path that cut through two large ponds when they began to stir…

Giant frogs! Stories were told of these massive beasts having the ability to swallow whole their prey. We unsheathed our weapons and readied spell as they advanced and fell to our blows and spells.

Many more of these beasts sprung forth from the ponds and we equally dispatched them without injury. We advanced to the moat house, expecting a full retinue of bandits and were surprised to find a rag-tag crew of them guarding the interior.

Stallen, not having strummed his mandolin in more than a day, took it out and began singing, ‘Bandit ass is gonna be kicked today!’ a wonderful little song that always riled the troops up. As we entered the courtyard, more of the bandits leapt out from bushes as if to ambush us, but we were ready for them and other than some nicks and scratches, we made it out just fine.

The best of course was when two of the bandit crossbowman jumped out from their hiding spot behind some bushes and fired a crossbow bolt at Karish, missing the barbarian, but drawing his attention. He made a charge attack and rushed the two and swung the heavy sword in a high overhead arc almost slicing the first one in two and then using the carry-through momentum to turn the blade into a swing into the other which lopped off his arm and took him down as well.

We cleared the courtyard, licked our wounds, realized we were fine and had some options. We could explore this tower or enter the main keep itself. We opted for the tower and upon entering the round stone structure, a monstrous spider slowly, almost hovered, down to the ground via a thick web and greeted us with almost a hiss. This could prove to be a tough fight, we had no means to stop venom, and just as we were about to engage, it turned around and thick, heavy, sticky webs shot out and covered most of us, freezing our legs and most of us in place. This would definitely be tough.

The casters were able to move their arms and legs and got free of the web and luckily escaped while Zert and Eldiritch, also free, provided a loose defensive line to the casters behind them. Karish, our main damage-dealer was stuck good along with Stallen and our man-at-arms follower. Stallen, his lips not dry yet, whipped out his mandolin and sang, ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider went down the Tower Wall, Unsheathe your weapons and make the creature Fall!’ a child-like rhyme that still inspired the party just as the spider began to advance.

The huge spider approached Zert and its giant pinchers missed the warrior just as the casters began their incantations and summoned two celestial dogs to be used as bait and draw the ire of the venomous beast. Karish and Stallen were still stuck, but the man-at-arms broke free and moved slowly through the webs to freedom but couldn’t quite make it and became stuck again. Eldiritch and Zert hacked away at the spider and drew greenish-red blood just as it snapped at a celestial dog and split it nearly in two from a vicious attack. Better it than us!

Through spell, attack, arrow or bolt, we hacked, pierced, and sliced our way to victory and after a tough battle where no one was really hurt we were left with its corpse, belly-up, legs together in the all-to-familiar way these arachnids die. We cut it open and searched but found nothing, but there was a chest here to which Eldiritch examined for traps and opened the lock. Within… precious loot!

We found some additional potions, scrolls, and some coin and more importantly, the best loot of all so to speak, but this area which we just cleared seemed safe enough to sleep and rest. [All magic items in the game need to be identified as they are just listed as ‘magic potion’, ‘magic scroll’, ‘magic sword’, etc. so to find such an area so close to our quest is a godsend. We could use this area to rest, refresh spells, heal, etc. and not have to worry about random encounters.] We capitalized on the safe area and the casters re-memorized ‘Read Magic’ so we could discover what these potions and scrolls were. After a short rest we revealed they were neutralize poison potions and magic scrolls of chill touch and ray of enfeeblement. I’m sure they’ll come in handy…

We re-memorized our spells for battle and slept a full eight hours and left the tower at dusk. The setting sun gave everything a reddish hue as we opened the giant mouthouse’s double doors and entered the main entry chamber. Some wood and broken furniture seemed to move just as dire rats sprang from the mess to attack us. We were ready for them though and killed the giant rodents in mid-leap. Karish, having just been diseased by these foul pests, wiped his blade free of their blood as we explored more of the first floor.

To our right was a passage into a larger room and we slowly entered to be greeted by a loud and venomous hiss. The new potions we found may have a quicker use after-all. It slithered its way forward and almost blocked the door, preventing our full group from entering the room and engaging. Karish, funneled his rage and unleashed his massive attack on the snake but missed while the casters let magic missiles fly and Kumari summoned another dog to be used as bait. Eldiritch tumbled into the room past the snake and stabbed its rear – which begs the question – does it even have a ‘back’?

The snake missed us thankfully, and by the second minute of continuous fighting it lay dead at our feet thanks to a heavy swing from Karish’s sword [See the bottom right of the screen? All the blue texts acts as hyperlink and when you click in that it opens up a new screen that actually shows you the die roll you did along with all modifiers. The same applies to damage rolls and it really underscores the huge ‘undercoat’ of the game in relation to tabletop PnP.]

We explored more of the first level of these ruins, but not before returning to our tower and resting first as we used many spells in that last fight. It was night now and Eldiritch scouted ahead of the group to uncover the enemy so we could prepare for the fight. Definitely a smart way of advancing and we couldn’t imagine a party without such a skilled individual. He went down another side passage where closed doors blocked our views. We would have to open them and in so doing if creatures lie within, our surprise might be lost and we wouldn’t know what we faced. We chose the door at the end of the hallway and from within a giant lizard, [think Komodo dragon] hissed out a forked tongue at our entrance. Zert and the rest of us charged in and tried to surround it getting in as many swipes as possible before it could react.

We missed quite a few of these surprise attacks and the giant lizard landed a malicious bite on Zert, piercing through his armor, almost breaking his leg. We had a hard time piercing the reptile’s scaly armor and its bite was like a small dragon and to be avoided at all costs. It was beginning to look futile when the mages began using magic to get past the creatures defenses.

We emptied almost our entire repertoire of spells into the lizard before it finally fell to our attacks. Once dead, we cut it open and found an ornate shield, unaffected by the lizards stomach acids; this surely must be magic! Stallen laughed, ‘Maybe that’s why the beast was so hard to hit,’ as the party snickered. There was a fine chest in here as well which our rogue checked and opened.

Interesting. A masterwork crossbow, known for weighing less than a normal one, and having a slight edge in battle, this would do well for Xiamaru who wields such a weapon in lieu of his spells. We definitely had to rest and we uncovered stairs going down and one last large door on the first floor which we wanted to explore first. After resting, we returned to the door and setup a defensive circle around the door so to let in only a couple of whatever was on the other side. Karish opened the door and we were greeted by…

Oh Crap! We all prepared for the worst and Karish shouted, ‘Let them come to us! PREPARE YOURSELVES!! Caster – Grease ‘em!’ Just as he ended his shouting order, Xiamaru’s spell of grease was launched and the bandit leader tripped as the floor became as oily as a pan of butter. Other bandits fell as well which gave us the chance to fire on their prone bodies. Stallen strummed the all too familiar, ‘Let’s kick some Bandit ASsssesssss..Yeaahhh uh-huh!’ and the troops were inspired.

The battle was looking good until hell broke loose. Two bandits, unseen from within the room, charged forth and even though we were ready for them, we missed with our swings and they launched into a flurry of attacks. Karish missed with his heavy sword opening him up to a critical slash which opened his chest nearly killing him outright just as the other brigand slashed his shoulder which we swore tore tendons and muscles. Karish slumped to the floor in a pool of blood which grew larger ever second…

[Check the lower right attack and damage rolls in the above screenshot. OUCH. Were these attacks directed at just about anyone else they would be dead. We got LUCKY and the fight was only beginning] Kumari eye’s widened and she knew what she had to do but couldn’t quite reach Karish to be of help in the tight quartered mess of people. Raimol , the man-at-arms, quickly grabbed a potion of healing and dumped its contents on the open wound which closed it and stopped the bleeding, but Karish was still out cold. Elditich’s blade slipped in and pierced one of the brigands ribs just as Pishella finished a spell and another celestial dog appeared to help take some blows. Xiamaru cast a sleep spell and the brigand leader slumped back into the grease for which he just stood up in. Zert swiped at the brigand and connected, but these were tough opponents, much tougher than the guards out front that fell to one or two blows.

One of the brigands nearest Karish didn’t like what we were doing trying to save him and attacked his unconscious form almost killing him [he went to -8!] and we knew we had to stop the brigand or help Karish before the next round of attacks or he would likely die. Kumari was finally able to get in range and used a scroll from her pack of ‘Cure Moderate Wounds’ and after reading the scroll quickly, Karish’s wounds miraculously healed up and he stood, although fatigued, but with presence of mind of what had to be done. The brigands eyes widened, the very one that beat on his lifeless body, just as Karish wound up his giant sword and returned the favor. *Schluuucckkkk!* was the sound as the sword cleaved through the man and killed him instantly.

[I’m not making this up – it was pretty awesome when Karish got up, missing the Brigands AoO (attack of opportunity) and then scored a critical hit on the brigand and then cleaved into another. Playing in this Ironman-style only makes it richer and of course a helluva lot scarier. Look at the above screenshot to see the 18 point crit! Nice…]

Pishella charmed another brigand who began attacking his own and the battle was going our way for the first time. We charged into the room with the sleeping brigand leader and now-scared crossbowman as he quickly fell to our assault which left the sleeping leader…

‘Please, allow me,’ chided Eldiritch as he plunged his short sword deep into the sleeping man’s chest. The peaceful snoring became a choking gurgle and ceased just as his life emptied out on the greasy floor underneath. ‘I guess blood and oil don’t mix after-all…’ came the evil whisper from the rogue and Kumari smiled.

A half-dozen corpses litter the floor and we began the task of looting them. They carried copper and some silver, but no gold or platinum save for the leader who obviously carried the good stuff. It wasn’t much, but anything helped and we headed back to our safe tower to lick our wounds and prepare for the stairs down. We almost lost Karish that fight and it easily could have been any of us. We learned from our battle what to do differently, and we prepared ourselves for what lay beneath…

* * * * *

[Next time... we adventure into the depths of the moat house and discover what lies beneath. Having come so close to losing one of our members, we’re not sure this is the correct path yet, but we really don’t know where else to go or what to do save for ‘Emridy Meadows (more on that later). We are close to leveling though, and I think once we hit level 3 and get the added HP’s and spells it should definitely make fights like the above less of a panic… Stay tuned for Chapter 5!]

Chapter 5

[Last we ventured, we had cleared the top level of the moat house and after recouping and having a close call with Karish, we decided to press on. Although I personally sort of remember a little of what lay beneath, our real life campaign ended down here, or at least the progress into this module did. It wasn’t too far beyond this that the adventurers were overrun and limped back to Hommlet to disband and start other adventures elsewhere, never to return to the Temple, until now (in an alternate universe
icon_razz.gif
). So while I remember some of the adventure, it isn’t until I’m going through it again that it really sinks in with amazing detail. They truly did a great job on this game mirroring the module…let’s hope our adventures don’t mirror our real life ones. We gather the party and set forth :) ]

* * * * *

We looked down the dark staircase into the level below, uncertain of what welcomed us beneath. We swore we heard the faint sounds of shuffling or movement but was uncertain. Torches were lit though as faint light flickered below and we had no choice but to move down the steps…

We gathered below in a loose formation and were certain we heard the sounds of eating, as if we entered some mess hall. The smell of death permeated the air and Eldiritch slipped into the shadows and began exploring the large room. As he crept ahead, the sound of eating became louder…

Ugh…Zombies are feasting on the remains of humans and from here we can’t tell if they were bandits or townsfolk. It’s too late to save them, but not to prevent this from happening again. We setup a good assault position as they haven’t seen us yet and begin the attack with a salvo of arrows and bolts which fly through the air and land with meaty *thunks* into the dead flesh of the zombies. The warriors advance en masse and Kumari turns the undead into cowering punching bags just as we hear a scream from the back where the mages are. Thick, green ooze or slime which must have held to the ceiling above, and waiting of course for our attack, dropped down and threatened our casters.

Thankfully, Karish hadn’t moved yet, nor Eldiritch, as they rushed in to slice into the green slimes. As their blades sliced the jelly-like substance we were afraid they might split in two or multiply, but this didn’t happen and we dispatched the slimes and the zombies who really couldn’t fight back as their fear of Kumari’s god was so powerful. [This room, this area, is what I remember about our real life campaign and it was because of that why I was tripping out seeing the zombies eating the corpses. These corpses could have easily been the dead characters of Rod and the other NPC you guys were with. I admit I laughed a little at the whole surreal scene…I even remember the two alcoves above where you guys sort of had your last stand. Pretty crazy seeing all this in computer detail!]

We cleared the rest of them and in so doing uncovered a secret door in one of the large pillars with stone stairs going deeper down [I imagined the stone spiral stairs of the Ulm Steeple here]. We cleared and checked the rest of this room and opened some doors near the stairs which held some barrels full of food stuffs and a chest full of black robes with a golden eye emblazed upon the back. There were eight of these cloaks but we opted to leave them in the chest. There was one door we did not open and then the secret door we found. We chose to go down the secret door and found ourselves empty out into some crypt. Just as we got our bearings in this foul-smelling room of death we were surprised by more of the dead, but this time, they were different…

‘Ghouls!’ shouted Kumari, as she brought out her holy symbol expecting the beasts to cower, but instead, they hissed, and more came forward to the attack. This wasn’t good. Stories were told about these undead having the ability to paralyze and then rip and rend helpless opponents to shreds as they were still fully awake, being eaten alive. Stallen brought out his electric mandolin and began belting out the lyrics to ‘It’s a dead man’s party’ … I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go, Walkin’ with a dead man over my shoulder, Waiting for an invitation to arrive, Goin’ to a party where no one’s still alive…

The party energized and the all-too-familiar grease spell let loose as the ghouls tripped and fell to the floor. We took advantage of their prone state and the grease was placed just on our perimeter, so as they tried to get up, they were beat upon by our party and surprisingly dispatched in short order.

We explored deeper into the crypts and found a wall they must have broken through and one that led to their den. We also found what looked like a tunnel to the outside in which they must have used to raid from. Within this den of bones and debris we came across some scrolls, potions, and a very small chest…

This chest was ornate and exuded some magical power as when placed on the ground and opened, it grew in size and we were able to use for storage. This was a godsend as we could hardly carry any actual looted gear out of here due to encumbrance, so with this, we could finally carry all the armor and weapons of the fallen bandits and monsters we find. We needed to sleep and memorize some new spells so we headed back to our tower and examined these scrolls. They were clerical in nature and one was a raise dead – surely this would come in handy, although we hoped to never have to use it. We traveled back into the crypts which opened up into a full-scale dungeon with separate paths to the south, east, and west. We sent the thief ahead to scout…

We decided to go west first, or to the right, and stairs led down into a small cave with a pond that as soon as we entered the room began to stir…

A giant crayfish jumped from its ‘nest’ and charged our party. We summoned dogs and birds to be used as bait as we attacked the armored shellfish and the only things that seemed to penetrate was the magic from our casters. The giant pinchers snapped out and split a celestial dog in two as our warriors weapons finally began to strike flesh as they slipped in under the scales. After a lucky melee where the crayfish missed most of its attacks we had one where we landed almost all of ours and it lay dead in the shallow cave pool. Karish got wounded, but it wasn’t serious and we decided to use a clw and press on.

Eldiritch resumed his stealth and snuck ahead straight, or east, of where we were and the passage emptied out into a large room being guarded by a tall hyena-type humanoid – a gnoll.

We gathered together and formed a defensive line of warriors and casters in the back. In a whispered voice, Stallen gave the command, and arrows and bolts cut the cave’s still air and flew into their mark killing the lone gnoll sentry outright. We advanced ahead and Eldiritch spotted more of the dog-beasts in a large den of sorts. What were these beasts doing here? They seemed to be guards for someone or something, but who? We decided that if the rest of these gnolls were as weak as the sentry then we could take them and so we charged into the room and attacked.

They must have been expecting us, or had seen us take out the guard, as they weren’t as surprised as we had hoped and what ensued was a full-on battle. Grease spells went off, summoned pets to interfere with their attacks and soak up some damage and Stallen playing his instrument. The grease tripped their leader (too bad you can’t set that on fire!) and another gnoll, but one wasn’t affected and charged Xiamaru and what happened next was the closest we came to dying yet. Xiamaru later would swear he could tell what the beast ate for dinner as it was so close he could smell his breath and he wondered that strange as the Morningstar connected with his skull and the world turned black. [Xiamaru went from 9 hit points to -9 in one blow…ohmygod.]

And that’s the thing. It’s amazing how quickly things can turn. One minute you feel on top of the world, and the next you’re scrambling to save your fallen comrade. He looked dead. He was motionless and even Kumari seemed to indicate there was no hope, but Zert reached into his pack and knelt down and poured a full potion of clw on his cracked skull. Miraculously, the split began to close, and blood stopped flowing, but it wasn’t enough. He would most likely be out the rest of the fight, something that wasn’t good as he provided utility and back-up to our group. Pishella yelled out she would watch him and told us to get that leader before he got up. We advanced in the chaos and attacked the prone and defenseless gnolls. These were definitely tougher than the sentry and had whipped themselves into a frenzy which helped their attacks and gave them massive strength. The fight ebbed and flowed with some of us taking hits and some of them crumpling to our attacks. Thankfully, we had Kumari behind us healing any wounds we encountered, and then the gnoll leader got up. Stallen tried something new as he whipped out his mandolin and played a little acoustic version of ‘Now you see me, now you don’t’ which held the gnoll’s leader attention so marvelously that he actually slumped to the floor fascinated by his strumming…

Pishella then moved ahead some and charmed another gnoll and it was then the battle truly turned back our way. The charmed gnoll wailed on the sitting leader who broke out of his trance but not before the damage was done and the rest of us wailed on him with Eldiritch plunging a short sword into his back.

With only one charmed gnoll left, we gathered around him in a circle and just as his glazed eyes were beginning to show some sign of understanding, we hacked him down and killed the beast almost instantly. We explored their den and wondered if it safe to rest and ultimately decided to head back to our safe tower.

We used another potion of clw on Xiamaru and brought him back to walking strength so we could travel back safe. On top of this, we all felt a little stronger and wiser from that fight and the days before since we had arrived. We felt we needed to train and perhaps take a few days to do so at the tower. It was decided and we headed back out

LEVEL UP! WOOT! Man, this has been tough but worth it and feels hard-fought every step of the way. We really needed this level and the added hit points are what we’re going to require being any use ahead of us. We leveled up and as per my self-imposed rule; we got whatever HP’s we got. This time was a mix of good and just ok. They were as follows:

Eldiritch 13hp to 18hp (good – above avg)
Karish 24hp to 35hp (this was by far the best roll and thank god it was high)
Stallen 15hp to 19HP (ugh, this sucked)
Xiamaru 9hp to 13hp (ouch…paper tige-..err.paper cat.)
Kumari 13hp to 17hp (considering her constitution score gives her a -1 per lvl, I guess this isn’t all that bad, simply avg.)

What was best of all was the new spells…and they couldn’t have come at a better time.

We gathered our party before venturing forth and headed back into the depths of the moat house. We came back to the gnoll den and there was an area in the east wall that opened up into a large passageway we decided to explore. Feeling more boisterous and feeling like we could easily take on almost anything, we came across a ‘T’ that went north (left) or south (right). We turned left and found some stairs going up…and up…and up…and up…and we decided to send in the thief.

Wow..a slumbering ogre. ‘Stallen would have something new for a song’, Eldiritch thought to himself. This was going to be a tough fight and we needed a plan. We decided to hang back and let the ogre beat on summoned animals while we pelted it with arrows, bolts, and spells. We would grease the entrance so if it decided to run for us it might fall and we would save the web spell for escape or if we really needed it. We got into position…

And began the summoning…

And it was on!

Summoned dogs, spiders, snakes and wolves joined the fight – it was a verifiable zoo in that room as the area in front of the door became slick with grease. The ogre fell for the summoning’s as we all fired our missiles into the beast. It was tough to land any of the attacks from our bows and crossbows as we were firing into melee, but the spider was able to bite the ogre and even poisoned him to boot. Then he roared and brought down his mighty club on the spider…

*SPLAT!!* Eldiritch and some of the front ranks near the door got spattered with the spider’s remains as the force was so massive. [HOLY CRAP! Look above at that critical…49 point damage hit…that would have insta-killed all of us. Uh-oh.]
With that hit, the very floor seemed to shake and our nerves with it. Seeing how powerful this foe was, our toughest yet, we all became humbled once more, and realized we may be out of our league. We stepped up our attacks and kept the summoned pets popping into the beasts’ melee. We only had one summoning left, so we better do something better quick…

*BLAM!* There goes the last hit which instantly killed a dog…

Just as we summoned the last dog to intervene the beast took a swing and killed the dog instantly as it flew through the air landing in a lifeless heap. The ogre began walking our way with pure rage in its eyes as if it knew we were responsible for this ‘toying’. Stallen gulped and Karish switched out to his 2-handed sword, stepping up to the front ranks expecting to die before it got past him. ‘Bring it on!’ Karish shouted and the ogre advanced..

*THUD!* the beast slipped in the grease [THANK GOD!] which meant it was prone and not in melee, maybe we could hit the thing! ‘Quick! Cast the web!’ shouted Stallen as Xiamaru lips began shouting incoherent words and just as he was done the air in the room where the ogre was just now getting up erupted in thick, sticky, webs keeping him to the floor. [I was reminded of Gulliver’s Travels here…lol]

The beast was taking hits, lots of them, arrows and bolts protruded from his chest, legs, shoulders, and arms but it kept coming. It was on its feet now and only a matter of time before it broke free of the web keeping him a pincushion to our assault. Just as we thought he would break free Karish whipped out his crossbow and loosed a bolt that pierced the creature’s neck and just as the ogre grabbed the bolt it crumpled to the ground in the same movement, motionless.

Wow…what a fight. Our blood was pumping [and so was mine, lol] as we entered the room slowly. We were weak, without spells (other than clerical) and although fully ready for almost anything, if another one of these beasts were here then we would have to flee. There were two doors, and judging from the looks of our maps we were making as we ventured, they must have led to the other room we originally came down with the zombies and green slime. We opened one of the doors and encountered three prisoners. Two gnomes and an elf were captives and told me their story of how they were exploring this place before surrendering to the ogre. They feared the worst, and it looked like we saved them just in time.

He gave us a ring for our efforts that would mark us a friend among all gnomes. Karish grunted at this as if not to care, but Stallen, being the party negotiator didn’t look a gift horse in the mouth and took it. We also looted the ogre that had a black cloak which was very unusual, almost melding into the shadows. We went back to the tower; since we were so close now and rested up and came back down to explore more. Upon Eldiritch exploring another path of the dungeon he encountered a passage leading into a large room with a giant ape-like humanoid…

‘Bugbears,’ noted Xiamaru. ‘This is the first time I have encountered these but I remember my teacher describing them in school. They have huge strength and make formidable opponents so be wary,’ he whispered in the darkness. We gathered around the passage so we could fire onto the lone guard and send in our summoned pets. That method seemed to work well for us before, so it was worth trying it again. We started the fight…

It worked like clockwork. We advanced into the room and took out the other two bugbears that used bows against our summoned pets. An entryway the guard stood in front of led into a large room where we could see more of the giant creatures and they were ready for us. We decided to bring the fight to them then and launched in a web spell and greased the floor. Karish charged in to get any free attacks on anyone who slipped in the grease.

These ones were much tougher. They were enraged for one, but this was the first battle in which the enemy used items on their body, namely potions of healing. More than twice we had one of them near death only for them to swig a potion and be almost at full health again. What was more aggravating was that those potions should be for us! We would need them more than they would… at least later. Stallen came into the mix and tried out a new spell of his and charmed one of the beasts to fight for us just as Pishella charmed another one.

The charmed beasts pounded on their own kind and we enjoyed this new method of fighting opponents. Having them fight themselves can immediately shift the odds in your favor; we just hope it never happens to us. With the odds so much with us, it was easy to wrap up the battle and we ordered the two charmed beasts to attack each other in the end with a little help from our party. We looted the corpses and with our new chest of holding, grabbed their armor and weapons to sell but other than some coin, didn’t find anything special. Out of spells again and a little tired from the fight, we opted to go back to our tower and rest again. We had one more passage left to explore and after our campfire chat amongst ourselves, the opinions were endless on what this whole place was and why all these beasts were here. What were the cloaks? What were they for? Who were all these beasts under the command of? The captives we freed mentioned the ogre wouldn’t attack men who wore those cloaks, but who were these men and where were they? We had only one place left to look and looking back, we wish we never did…

* * * * *

[Next time... we complete the moat house and discover the makings of a plot that would make most cringe in fear – something far greater is at work here than normal bandits and we’re about to become entwined in this spidery intrigue. We also have our first fatality and lose an original member of the team … Stay tuned for Chapter 6!]

Chapter 6

[Last we ventured we had cleared most of the moat house and what remained was just one large door to explore. We had made it to level 3 and between the added hp’s and new spells we felt pretty prepared for what lay beyond. This chapter will be shorter than most, but much more detailed due to the climax of this part of the adventure. Speaking of detail, to keep these a little bit shorter and since there will likely be much more combat as the game goes on, I’ll be briefing the fights a lot more unless they’re particularly noteworthy. At level 1 and 2, almost all fights are particularly noteworthy because it could easily be our last – especially in Ironman mode. But now it was time to wrap up this leg of the adventure and so we gathered the party and ventured forth…]

* * * * *

We found ourselves in front of a huge oak door and after listening intently for almost a minute, could hear nothing on the other side. We assumed the standard position, prepared for the worst, and opened up the door only to be greeted by a lone guardsman some 30’ in. Before we could think, he snapped off some question, ‘What are you doing here?’ Eldiritch stumbled out an answer, something like, ‘what are yooouuuu doing here?!’ just as the guard knew something was wrong and took off running down the hallway. We were about to give chase, but thought better of it, and as we moved slowly down the hall in ready position, we could hear the sounds of shouting, prepared orders, and all-told, quite a lot of human voices.

We cautiously moved ahead revealing a little bit at a time of the room for which we heard voices, just a little more, a little more, then Xiamaru began his incantations and the air erupted in the room with a flash and a great web entwined many…

This was going to be tough. I’ll admit the thought crossed my mind to flee. We quickly counted 13 enemies, more perhaps we hadn’t seen, and some of them looked like veterans. Some had huge spears for attacking from a long distance and many were equipped with ranged missile weapons. The web helped, but now it was time to do some action and we charged in around the edge of the web and began attacking those we could without getting stuck in the web ourselves. The casters began summoning beasts to aid us and Stallen sang, ‘Ohhhh, baby, baby, baby…please saaaavveee usss, Mmmm….yeaa…huh-huh!’ Then Stallen cast a spell of his own and charmed a Sergeant to help us in the fight. That’s one…

Karish charged into the room with his two-handed sword held high and came down hard on the nearest crossbowman killing him with one blow, an attack so powerful it lopped the man’s arm off at the shoulder. That’s two. Now, if things could go like this the rest of the fight, we could go home together and have some drinks at the Welcome Wench…

[Check out the attack on the screen above – go Karish!] Xiamaru cast a sleep spell on some of the crossbowmen in the back of the room and put them down in slumber just as the leader of this group began to shout at us…

We never imagined finding out about this place and getting most of the answers to our questions in a manner like this, but here it was. With such pompous alacrity, this man wearing pure black plate mail with boots and gloves to match began to fill us in on their plot. We weren’t sure what was worse; the plot itself, or the fact that he was so sure we would be dead in minutes that it didn’t matter by telling us. All the matter, he went on…

So there it was. This Temple of Elemental Evil was being rebuilt and this outpost was going to raid Hommlett and use the ill-gotten loot to help further that cause. We got it, understood it, even could see his point, but the killing us part didn’t jive and so we fought on. We were beginning to take some damage. Karish took more than usual and when Kumari entered the room to heal him, she got hurt. Then Zert rushed in to help, and he got wounded as well. We were taking too much damage to take just one of them down; we needed a push to help us.

Xiamaru cast a grease spell towards the back of the room, which had their own fight going on with summoned wolves and dogs, and it erupted in chaos as this leader fell down along with some of his troops.

Well, that didn’t sit over well with the ‘master’ and when he got up, he was pissed, and the battle turned for the worse. He cast some dispel spell that effected everyone and everything. The web, grease, charms, and pets were gone in one fell swoop by one simple spell. Oh crap. Everyone gulped at that point. Someone just pushed the reset button and we were almost out of spells as he was just getting started. Eldiritch charged forth to close the gap and be a defense for the casters as there was no longer a web to prevent the guards from rushing us. He took some hits and was holding on by a thread…

Actually, we were all wounded to some degree [look above at the pix and note our health bars. Right about here I was expecting a full party wipe. I was scrambling as what to do to help us out as we were burning through CLW potions like mad (damn those bugbears for using them!)] Eldiritch was literally hanging on by a thread and any strenuous activity would put him down unconscious. He needed help and it was Xiamaru’s turn to act. He reached for the potion of CLW at his side, his only one to be used for himself in dire situations, uncorked it and ran forward to the aid of Eldiritch. The guard Eldiritch was facing off against had a long-spear, a weapon with incredible reach, and as Xiamaru got close to Eldiritch, the guards spear pierced Xiamaru’s shoulder drawing an ever-growing red stain. As he winced in pain to the injury he poured the potion of healing all upon Eldiritch’s wounds just as the guard took another powerful attack with his weapon and speared Xiamaru through the stomach. The mage’s eyes bulged in horror as the spear tip plunged out through his back and he fell to the floor dead.

A moment of silence… then, ‘NOOOOooooo!!!’ cried Karish as he swung his mighty sword and killed a guard he was facing. We lost count of what number that was. Then Zert, also affected by the obvious death of his comrade, rushed over in a mad dash to help only to be cut down by the master. Things were looking worse, much worse. Eldiritch had just turned around from seeing the lifeless face of his friend to see the edge of a sword leave a red trail of bloody mist from his body as the Sergeant in front of him attacked him. Had Xiamaru not sacrificed himself like he did, he knew he would be dead.

We needed help, and like yesterday. Pishella cast her last charm spell and thankfully it stuck, as the very same guard that killed Xiamaru began fighting his fellow guards. Karish was taking hits, lots of them, and covered in just as much his blood as those he had killed. Kumari ran over and poured a potion of moderate healing down Zert’s throat which helped tremendously and restored the fighter to his feet.

Just as Zert got up, Stallen used his powers of the bard to fascinate the Sergeant of their group – good, another one out of the fight, at least for now. But just as that happened, a crossbowman stepped back and loosed a bolt at Eldiritch, who engaged with another guard never saw it coming. The bolt pierced his side almost to the feather and took him down, out of the fight and bleeding.

Now it was Raimol, our man-at-arms henchmen, turn to act. He charged through the fray of battle and poured his potion of healing on to Eldiritch’s wound just as he ripped the bolt out. The magic worked as his side was mended and Eldiritch got to his feet coughing up some blood. The master, or Lareth as he was called, entered the chaotic battle and went from guard to guard applying healing to them as they fought us. ‘Kill the PRIEST!’ shouted the heavily wounded barbarian. Zert killed the crossbowman that was busy reloading his bolt from just shooting Eldiritch and Pishella summoned a dog to flank the bowman in the rear.

Heeding his own words, Karish focused on the priest and dealt a massive blow to the leader, but he was still up and in semi-good condition as his heavy armor protected him. Pishella, knowing that if the barbarian falls, then we will all likely fall, used her moment in time to pour her potion of healing on the wounded body of Karish. Just as she got done the barbarian fell. Lareth had cast a spell of ‘Hold Person’ and just as Karish was winding up to deliver a massive sword strike, he froze, and fell over like a motionless statue. One felt the collective heavy sigh of defeat from us when that happened…

What happened next likely took only a minute of real time, but felt like an eternity and all in slow-motion. The bastard Lareth kept wailing on Karish’s lifeless form as we all attacked him but couldn’t get through his heavy armor. Eldiritch having just gotten up saw an opening with Lareth’s back and took it…

… And missed. Raimol rushed over and struck the master just as he beat down on Karish again. Again we would strike and again we would mostly miss. Then the enemy priest turned to Stallen and commanded him to stop in which the bard simply shook it off, gave him the middle-finger, and swiped with his sword clashing off the heavy plate. Again, the heavily-wounded Lareth beat down on the helpless barbarian just as the spell wore off and Karish rose to his feet again.

With pure rage in his eyes, the barbarian reeled back his sword like a woodsman about to fell a tree, and with a mighty swing arced his blade across and cut the head off the priest in one massive blow just as the priest was crying out, ‘Not the FACE!!! NOooooo *gurgle*’…. The head landed at Zert’s feet and was kicked away. The headless body stood a moment more, and then collapsed in a metal heap. We had two charmed guardsmen left to contend with and we were all wounded to the core with one dead. We gathered around a charmed guard in a full circle, and then on Stallen’s command, hacked the man down dead before he could react. We did this twice.

We sort of stood around in shock, unsure of what to do next. The only sounds were the heavy panting of our breath and shifting of our bodies. Beyond that it was dead silence. We had won, but not without a price, and now it was time to determine what to do with the fallen. We could drag him back to town, but spells to raise the dead were prohibitively expensive and well beyond our meager savings. It might be many months or even years before we could save up enough to help Xiamaru; then Stallen remembered something. ‘The scroll!’ exclaimed the bard. ‘The one we found in the ghouls den. The raise dead one…we have to use it!’

Realization all dawned on the faces of the party and not a one objected to using it for this cause. It was our only one, and there was a chance it would not work and turn the mage to dust, never to be raised again, but it was worth a try. Kumari began unrolling the parchment and dust and dirt fell to the ground as even the scroll itself smelled of death. She began reading the words…

At first nothing happened. Then Xiamaru’s eyes began to flicker and shot open wide, ‘Huh!? Wha-‘he cried. Everyone erupted in cheer and helped the poor mage up to his feet as he winced in pain where the spear had left a scar. After the short celebration, everyone began looting the dead, and stashing the items in the magical chest we found. We left the dead naked and also uncovered Lareth’s private diary from his dresser which we planned to give to Hommlet’s protectors, Burne and Rufus.

We rested one last time in the tower, hoping to never see the inside of it again and many of us looked at Xiamaru with comfort, each secretly happy he was still with us. We had no more scrolls or means to help the dead unless we find such treasures in our adventures, but with their rarity, we doubted that would be anytime soon. We all knew there would be no more second chances for us. We would be more careful and knew this was it from here on out. After a good night’s sleep we left to Hommlet and after explaining our findings to Rufus and Burne went to explain what we found to the Druid as well.

There was this town of decadence and scum known as Nulb, and our adventure would take us there next, but not without first exploring this ‘Emridy Meadows’, a place where the original battle between good and evil took place. We had some loose ends to wrap up there and after that, Nulb would await us. We walked into the Welcome Wench and never felt better as the crowd cheered us and welcomed us for our reputation was beginning to travel. We caroused long into the night that evening for we knew what lay in wait tomorrow… but slept soundly.

* * * * *

[Next time... we visit Emridy Meadows and see the age-old battlefield where evil was vanquished (along with crap-load of soldiers) and find some statue or memorable for the Priest of St. Cuthbert (Terjon I think is his name) This time I’m all caught up with the adventure so even I don’t know what awaits us. Hopefully we won’t lose someone and get lots of cool loot, but only time will tell… Stay tuned for Chapter 7!]

Chapter 7

[Last we ventured we had cleared the moat house and killed Lareth and his evil minions. We uncovered the plot to rebuild the Temple of Elemental Evil along with their upcoming raid and likely razing of Hommlet by such a force. We had a diary to share with the leaders of the town and our next step in the journey to uncover more of this sinister plot. Nulb, port town of decadence, corruption, and debauchery awaits us, but before travelling to the town, a quick stop-over at Emridy Meadows, a great battlefield where the forces of good and evil originally fought and which evil was vanquished and sent to the Temple to be banished and sealed. We also had our first death, Xiamaru Sinistrari, mage extraordinaire, and used our only scroll of raise dead on him. This saved him; luckily, bet he lost something like 2,000 xp in the process and at this low of a level, hurt a ton. But now it was time to wrap up this leg of the adventure and so we gathered the party and ventured forth…]

* * * * *

We woke up with heads pounding from too much ale, revelry, and an overall good time for we saved the town from a great evil this last adventure. We earned the reputation of ‘moat house cleaners’ and boy did we deserve it. We remembered the solemn words of the druid leader of this town and how he encouraged us to move on to Nulb to uncover more of the plot against this area and this town. If the Temple was truly being rebuilt, we would need to find out, and then pass the news on back here to the druid and get it in the right hands.

We remembered a quest the head cleric of St. Cuthbert had asked of us though, and felt obliged to do that first. It would be a quick side trek and gaining favor with the church of this town would mean lower costs for healing and items they sell. We sold our goods and loot from the moat house and readied ourselves for the worst these battlegrounds had to throw at us. Kumari was wearing Lareth’s black plate mail after getting refitted at the town tailor and even used his mace of striking. The rest of us purchased some more potions of clw from the church and what other magical items we found in the moat house were equipped and we were off.

The trip was uneventful and our survival skills were kicking in. We arrived in the field and surveyed the scene…

It wasn’t long walking across the grassy fields before the ground shifted and up crawled skeleton warriors long dead from the great battle. Whether these fought for good or evil originally, no one knew, but for now they only wanted our death and they came at us en masse.

We defended against some, but then more and more kept coming until Kumari brought forth her unholy symbol and commanded the dead to obey. Without hesitation, the skeletons stopped in mid-strike, mid-stride, and fell into formation with us. We had a skeleton army, albeit small, but still, we wondered how big we could get it…

We were off looking for undead to ‘capture’ for our control when we came upon a great grizzly brown bear. There also looked to be some items of dead adventurers lying around so decided it best to relieve the animal of its treasure. We attacked.

We felt good about the fight, about to use the typical web/grease combo and watching our new dead guardians go off attacking the animal as we fired our missile weapons from afar until the bears ‘master’ came running forth and this time, it was no illusion. Ohhhhhh…crap. We all gulped.

We had just killed the bear and launched the web/grease combo on the hill giant to buy some time. This worked but it wouldn’t for long. What’s worse, any summoned pets we threw into the mix would die in one shot and before they could even get an attack in.

We ran out of summoned pets to use and the skeleton army we once had was quickly becoming just a pile of bones. Stallen stepped in and used his mandolin to fascinate the hill giant, effectively taking him out of combat until he was attacked again, so basically gaining some additional moments as we fired our ranged weapon at the giant.

Just as the web dissolved and the grease spell faded, the beast was making a bee-line for the nearest opponent which was thankfully a skeleton crossbowman. That skeleton provided a great service for taking the punishment meant for us, and we were able to continue our firing onto the raging giant. This thing was like a pincushion of arrows and bolts and kept coming, charging another skeleton and killing it with one slam of his tree-trunk club. It was almost dead, we could tell, and just as it was heading toward us, Xiamaru let loose a crossbow bolt which lodged deep into the giant’s chest and as it collapsed on its chest, the bolt blasted through its back.

It was our toughest opponent yet, unless you consider Lareth, but the toughest without spells for sure. We gathered what was left of our skeleton army and beset on the giant’s camp and uncovered some elvish chain, shields, and other loot and items including some magical gloves and a ton of gems and jewelry. We scooped it all up and kept exploring, eager to find more skeletons for our growing army.

We found some! These were skeleton gnolls, even better as they were tougher than normal skeletons and would make fine warriors for our ranks. It was amazing how quickly we fell into the role of generals as our army grew in size. We found a rock, multi-colored in fact, and figured this must be the rainbow rock the priest told us about which was near where he dropped his item. We searched and as we did, were attacked by even more undead. Great! Our ranks swell!

A skeleton priest led these new undead and didn’t like to be commanded. He would pay for his insolence! After his demise, Kumari commanded what was left of the undead army to obey and almost all the undead you see on the screen above was under our command. [OK, this was pretty awesome. Evil clerics get turn undead which will either cause them to cower in fear unable to fight or fall under our command while good clerics will either turn them or destroy them outright. It doesn’t take a genius to see the plusses of an evil cleric, and Kumari has proven her worth this campaign in spades! (is that racial?) I think we had somewhere between 10-13 of these troops at one time, a mixture of skeleton warriors, crossbowman, and gnolls. It was awesome! Although, some of the crossbowmen were running out of ammo and I couldn’t figure out how to replenish them. Oh well, they would make good buffers between us and the evil monsters that would do us harm

]

We gathered together and assembled a campfire and settled in for a good night’s rest with our undead soldiers rapt at attention. We memorized read magic and identify spells [which costs us 100 gp per spell – ouch!] and uncovered the gloves as dexterous ones, a cloak of elvenkind, and the elvish armor as some ornate and very strong magical armor, even better than the plate mail that Kumari was wearing. We shared the equipment amongst ourselves and gave it to those in need, and followed the advice of protecting the priest the most, thus she got to wear the elvish chain.

We gathered our camp up the next morning and set out for Hommlet to return the item we found to the church priest. We also found a strange figurine we asked him about which he exclaimed emanated some great evil and should be destroyed. That meant we should keep it and use it the next chance we got. Realistically, we identified it as a strange fungus figurine, and put it away for some future use unsure of quite what it would do. We were surprised to find the citizens of Hommlet unafraid of necromancy though as we trounced through town with a full retinue of undead guarding us. Maybe they were afraid to say anything lest they become one of them….muahaahahaahaha………..…ha.

We sold our goods, bought some more equipment and turned in the giants head to the town smith. ‘Huh? What’s this?’ you say. Oh, that’s right, a simple side quest from the town smith to bring him back the head of a giant before he would sell us masterwork items. This was some way of proving our worth, and to see the look on the smiths face as Karish threw the giants head at his feet. Priceless! He opened up the back shop and we all replaced all our normal weapons with masterwork ones, even getting a couple amazing bows that were tuned to our strength. Eldiritch sold all the gems and jewels we found and all told we must have accumulated some 2,000 or so in gold. We felt rich, and headed off to Nulb…

On the journey we were ambushed by some lizardmen. The poor lizardmen picked the wrong army to ambush as we let our undead loose on them.

Kumari walked over to a couple skeletons after the battle that were injured and cast cause light wounds on them which miraculously healed the dead. This was good…no pun intended J. We made it to Nulb without further confrontation and surveyed the town…

The town was full of brigands, pirates, and other scum not worthy of talking to. There was the typical selection of inns, taverns, shops and even a brothel which we would have to frequent. We set off to explore the dock-like town and stumbled upon a pirate named Grud that asked for a favor. This favor would bring great reputation to us and we figured since we’re still new in this place and need to get on their ‘good’ side so to speak, we obliged.

All we had to do was bring back the head of a giant gar. We already killed a giant crayfish, giant’s bear, and a giant itself, how hard could it be? Yea. We set off to this Imeryds Run…

The journey was short and with our undead retinue of soldiers we felt a little unstoppable. We began travelling through bogs and swamps looking for this gar and finally found the area marked on our map where this creature was supposed to frequent. Just as we arrived in this open bog area, a giant frog leapt out of the brush and attacked.

Hah! Oh, we so got this. Stallen didn’t even bother pulling out his mandolin for this one. [Little did we know, we were actually ambushed by a crap-load more monsters than this simple frog. Look above in the screenshot and see the wonderful selection of monsters I somehow missed until it was too late.] Oh this was going to be easy, we laughed. We’ll be back by lunchtime, we joked. Yea… Then big daddy came hopping out and we realized we were in way over our heads…

‘AMBUSH!!’ Yelled Stallen as he whipped out his mandolin and began playing, ‘We gonna dieeeee toddayyy, oh no, oh no, pleeeeaasseee don’t let us die today, oh no, oh no!’. The living troops tried to gather the courage to fight, they would need it, as the dead simply obeyed and attacked. We were attacked by a giant king frog, almost 3-4 times the size of a normal one and it already killed one of our undead in one mighty bite. We were also attacked by lizardmen from the west which we somehow didn’t see until they were running to us. ‘Web and Grease! NOW!’ shouted Karish just as Kumari ordered all the undead to attack.

Our faithful man-at-arms, Raimol, was training up to be a ranger and as such was pulling arrow after arrow from his quiver as he sent them downwind into the Kingfrog. Some arrows struck and other missed, but just as he was pulling another arrow from his quiver the swamp water beneath him erupted in a mass of water and greenish-blue flesh just as a giant Swamphag came bearing down on him. A mighty blow from the right, a mighty blow from the left, and a viscous bite from the 7’ tall hag left Raimol without part of his face and his arm barely hanging on as he collapsed into the murky swamp dead before he submerged under its depths.

Just as Zert, who was closest to Raimol turned around to try and save him (although it would have been fruitless), a mighty tongue lashed out from the Kingfrog and wrapped around him keeping his arms held tight against his body. Just at that time Eldiritch pulled out his short sword of toad slaying from the lesser of the two frogs as it slumped below the murky waves. Karish swiped at the Kingfrog attempting to kill the beast to let Zert go just as the web and grease spells finally went off a little too late. It did have the fortune of webbing that Seahag which likely saved our group momentarily, at least until it broke free. The morale was low, the fight was not going good, our dead warriors were become….deader, and we lost Raimol. Actually, it got worse.

[Look at the screenshots above and see the Behemoth’s tongue wrapped around Zert. Oh jeebus!]

*GULP!* Was the sound the Kingfrog made as Zert went flying through the air and ended up down the giant frogs throat now slowly being eaten alive in the belly of the beast.

Thankfully, the giant frog was almost dead and the skeleton gnolls, Karish, Eldiritch, and even the mages were pounding on the beast in the hopes of saving another from dying. Just as all looked lost, a skeleton gnoll got a lucky blow with his weapon and killed the giant frog with a mighty blow. As the now-dead Kingfrog began to slump to the ground, Karish used his sword to open the maw of the creature and help Zert out of the belly of the beast, who was all covered in a green jelly-like substance and smelling like Verbobonc sewers.

Zert was lucky to be alive, but just as this side of the fight looked good, we still had to contend with a very angry and ferociously strong Seahag and its minions. The lizardmen began to fall to our attacks as the Seahag kept trying to escape her sticky prison. There were only a couple lizardmen left when Stallen fascinated the Seahag with his singing which looking back probably saved another death.

The battle was swinging our way with only the Seahag left when the web disappeared. Karish knew what he had to do, and just as he was stepping into the sacrificial zone of the Seahag to tie her up, a skeleton attacked the swamp hag with its weapon and broke the fascination. She was wounded, but it would take a lot more to take this thing down and everyone focused their fire on doing just that. Karish swung back his great sword in a chopping motion and came down hard in an overhead swing and cleaved deep into her shoulder finally stopping some midway through her chest. He kicked the beast off his sword as the Seahag splashed into the swamp whence she came.

[Check out the above screenshot and the killing blow of the Seahag. Phew!]

The battle was beyond tough. This was no ordinary fetch and retrieve of a simple fish head. Oh no, this was an ambush and we were the morsel of meat in the giant pincher attack of swamp monsters. And to think, we haven’t even found the gar yet. Ugh…but we felt a bit wiser from that fight, a bit more ‘experienced’ as it were, and decided what to do with our dead.

We were debating on keeping the man-at-arms with us for a while to see if there was anything we could do when the gar attacked. When this thing moved, the swamp would make waves accordingly; we almost felt the monster before encountering it. ‘Skeletons! Attack!’ shouted Kumari as the rest of us took our ranged weapons out and fired. The skeletons proved great so far and without them we would surely all have died in that last battle. They soaked up hits, dealt some damage, and proved most beneficial, so when they began dying so easily to the giant jaw of the gar, we winced out a little each time.

It killed only three of our skeleton warriors before we finally put enough arrows, bolts and spells into it that it too fell to our attacks. With the help of Karishs’ mighty sword, we cut the head off the beast and headed back to Nulb to turn in this quest. We felt overwhelmed, almost out of our league, and decided after dropping this stinking fish head off in that damnable town that we would head back to Hommlet to see what we could do for Raimol and also see if there were any adventures worthy of lesser experienced parties. Oh, we also went back and looted the other monsters we had slain and found a magic sword, some more elvish armor, and some potions and a ring in the belly of the Kingtoad. There was also a magical longbow and we wondered just how many unfortunate adventurers this giant toad ate before we liberated these items.
Karish and Zert, the two strongest warriors, carried the lifeless body of Raimol between them and thus the trip back was long and hard. We left Raimol at the town entrance deciding not to drag him through town and dropped the Gar’s head at Grud’s feet, somewhat pissed.

Grud Squinteye was elated and swore up and down he would tell everyone about us and a friend of his is a friend to us. We didn’t stick around to believe him and began the long and tough road back to Hommlet. We were downtrodden, beaten, and wondered how much it would be to raise Raimol. If it was affordable we would do it, but regardless, it would be good to know for the future what that price of life would be. We finally arrived without encounter and went straight to the church. We talked to the head priest over and over again but he never seemed inclined to help our dead friend. We didn’t have time to figure out why and carried his body to the town druid who actually was able to help.

It was going to cost 3,000 gold and we ran the risk of him coming back as a badger. It was all of our money, we would be broke again and it only took a moment more of thought to decide it was worth it. He spent too much time with us and saved us too many times to let him go, but most important, we could afford it. This did leave us in a quandary, for the next party member to perish would likely stay dead unless we found the means to come up with the funds. We gave the druid his money and he began the spell.

As the great spell finally climaxed, Raimol’s chest heaved and it was his own breath that escaped his lungs. He was no badger, otter, or gnome either! We cheered, although still feeling somewhat beaten, and went back to the inn to rest a few nights and regain our strength. Before we left we discovered that the price of such a reincarnation would almost be doubled if needed again. We understood the meaning and headed back to the Wench. During this time we also trained some and advanced our skills in various areas…

[Level-up! Yea… Here comes the dreaded HP roll.

Eldiritch 18hp to 25hp (very good - above avg)
Karish 35hp to 43hp (above average. Could have been better, but best not be greedy)
Stallen 19hp to 25HP (finally! Some health for the bard)
Kumari 17hp to 19hp (this absolutely sucked. This made the case to protect Kumari even greater as she must have rolled a 3 then with her -1 con modifier for a 2. Total suckage)
Xiamaru 12hp – he actually didn’t level because of the huge xp loss from dying. But, he summoned his familiar, and you can choose from a ton, and chose a toad (of all things, right!?) which added 3 hp’s. Please note that he also lost a hp from coming back to life.

After a few days of rest, or was it a week?, we gathered ourselves together, brushed off the dust, and headed out to seek some other adventure. Nulb would have to wait for now until we felt a little stronger in skill and spell. We spoke to the smith in the town as we were selling loot and he mentioned a possible lead…

After selling our goods, we decided to seek out the town elder and see what possible adventure he may have. He would be sleeping though now and best discuss it in the morning after we lift our spirits with some ale, singing, and rest. That night as we celebrated we would look across at Raimol and wonder why the priest of St. Cuthbert refused to raise him and the more we drank, the less we thought on it. Tomorrow would be a new day and we would find out what this town leader wanted and most importantly, we were all together, even as what was left of the skeletons stood at attention against the inn’s walls.

* * * * *

[Next time... we visit Kenter Nevet, the town elder, and see what he has for us. Looking back I fear I rushed to raise Raimol as it left us broke and the more we raise the dead, the higher the cost. But, he was an NPC, a follower, and coming up through the ranks becoming a semi-decent ranger, which you’ll see more of next chapter so… Stay tuned for Chapter 8!]

Chapter 8

[Last we ventured we had cleared Emridy Meadows, fought a hill giant and his giant bear pet, gathered an undead army, travelled to Nulb to uncover more information regarding the Temple of Elemental Evil, got sidetracked with a quest to bring a Nulb resident a giant fish head and lost Raimol in the process. This shook us up and felt the battle too tough for our experience and decided to try and find some other adventures before taking on Nulb once more. Back in Hommlet, the smith, Brother Smyth as he is called, gave us a morsel of gossip and recommended we seek out the town elder for a possible adventure. After reincarnating Raimol, the druid told us the price would be a lot more if there were a next time (6,000gp, then 12,000gp, then 24,000gp, etc). We gathered our party and ventured forth…]

* * * * *

We woke up with heads pounding from too much ale, revelry, and an overall good time because Raimol was back from the dead and we were safe, at least for now. The town smith had given us a lead and mentioned the town elder might have more information. Something about orcs holed up far to the north and growing in number. We gathered our things and left the inn intent on helping our ‘home base’ town of Hommlet and sought out Kenter Nevets.

It was our first time at the estate of the town elder and his residence was almost the size of the inn of the Welcome Wench. ‘This was old money,’ Eldiritch whispered, and anyone who knew the rogue understood his double-meaning. We entered the residence and mentioned the smith and what we could do to help. Looking back, one might equate his look of us as winning some town lottery, as he could barely hide is excitement in finding a group willing enough to investigate this orc uprising. He continued…

We gathered our party together and checked our equipment and setup party formation before we set out. This was a long journey, almost as far as Nulb, and we made sure we would be prepared for any ambush in store for us. [Below is our basic party outline with magical equipment so we can summarize them for later encounters. Please note that they are equipped with normal equipment as well not shown:

Stallen – Level 4 Half-Elf Bard – Masterwork studded leather, composite short bow Str 14, gnome ring (friendship?), cloak of elvenkind, wooden elvish shield and sword (for melee)
Karish – Level 4 Human Barbarian – barbarian armor, masterwork great sword, Lareth’s ring of free-movement (great for killing foes trapped in webs), gloves of dex +2
Eldiritch - Level 4 Elven Rogue – green elven chain, cloak of elvenkind, masterwork composite longbow str 14, trader’s shortsword +1
Kumari - Level 4 Elven Cleric – purple elven chain, Lareth’s club of striking, cloak of elvenkind, ring of protection +1, masterwork sling, steel shield +1
Xiamaru - Level 3 Elven Wizard – masterwork longbow Str 12, fungus figurine
Zert - Level 4 Human Ranger – Lareth’s Breastplate +1, Longsword +2, wooden elven shield
Raimol – Level 3 Human Ranger – Longbow +1
Pishella – Level 4 Sorcerer/Wizard – masterwork xbow ]

Feeling the best we would get, we set out for our destination.

We arrived without incident and surveyed our surroundings…

With the few undead guards we had left, we set them in front and advanced cautiously when we encountered a tough-speaking goblin..

The little goblin ran off and sounded some alarm before we could put an arrow in his back so when the orcs attacked we weren’t surprised. ‘To Arms!’ shouted Stallen, as a pack of orcs advanced on us as orc archers in the rear fired over them at our casters.

We greased the ground causing their front ranks to slip and fall as Kumari summoned her spiritual weapon for the first time. A blood-red scythe appeared out of thin air and hovered over the grease slicing down on the helpless foes. The warriors of our group gathered around the edge of the grease attacking the orcs as they tried to get back up…

Stallen played his all-too-familiar tune once more and the party was energized for battle. You could swore some of us sang along as well as we made short work of the greased orcs. The casters summoned pets, large and small, to occupy the bothersome archers in the back as we made our around the greasy-bloody grave of the orcs.

Xiamaru summoned a tougher pet, a wardog, who was making short work of some goblins that tried to flank us. The scythe moved on to help the dog as we charmed an orc sergeant, and Karish charged the orc archers in the back, making the run in an instant thanks to wearing light armor.

The orc archers fell quickly to the onslaught of sword and canine bite and we were left with an orc sergeant that worked for us. We didn’t trust the longevity of the spell and after finding a safe spot to rest, decided to put him out of his misery, for charmed as was, we swore he seethed in anger as we commanded him around.

After a short and restful reprieve, we pressed on and didn’t make it far before stumbling upon an angry little kobold, not too much-different than the goblin leader we saw earlier. This one had warnings of its own and threatened us just like his goblin friend.

He ran off, again quicker than we could put an arrow in his back, and sent the thief ahead to scout. Eldiritch uncovered an ambush waiting for us…

We knew better though, and learning from our previous encounters and what worked, followed the same steps. Step 1, web and grease the enemy:

Step two: Send in the summons to take on the enemies and soak up damage. This has worked better than expected as we’ve taken to summoning spiders recently who are immune to the web effects and poison their foes to boot!

Step three: Mop up and clean-up. This part is the fun part as we go around gathering up the loot of our fallen and adding them to our extraplanar chest, which has become almost full, and so we decide to hoof it back to Hommlet to sell and re-arm. On the way to Hommlet we encounter a wandering bard and Stallen bristled with a twinge of jealousy.

The bard sang when he talked and was far too nice for our liking. He did mention a quest he was on and shared his adventure with us…

He asked us if we could travel together and Stallen simply replied, ‘We’re full.’ Looking back, meeting such a character in the swamps as we did was strange and proved one of the more random wandering encounters we’ve had, but by the time we got to Hommlet and began selling our loot we had forgotten all about him. We slept the night in the inn and returned to the road heading to Hickory Branch once more, the area where the orc encampment lay in waiting.

No wandering bard or monster stopped out trek and when we returned we explored more of the area. As Eldiritch was creping ahead, he saw another ambush point ahead. We planned for the attack and Stallen began singing as the grease and web spell launched. We took out the bugbear quick along with the kobolds when Xiamaru dismissed the web spell so we could tackle the orcs in back.

Within moments of ensuing battle, the last of the foes dropped and what was left was the looting of the fallen. As we were rifling through their packs and grabbing what little coin they had, Eldiritch stumbled upon another group of monsters thankfully we didn’t disturb at the same time as these…

We needed to sleep though, and back to our safe spot we went and built a very small fire making sure not to alert anyone to our presence. We awoke at night, having fulfilled our eight hours of rest and explored a little more. As Eldiritch approached this group we saw the day before, we encountered a worthy foe, and again were reminded of how important it was to scout ahead before blindly charging…

Unfortunately, what would have been a great surprise attack was spoiled by one of our few remaining undead guards as it got too close to the enemy party and alerted them to our presence. They attacked and we weren’t prepared for them, as Eldiritch ran back to the safety of our group just as Kumari summoned a scythe to occupy them and provide cover for the fleeing thief. The ogre, unbothered by our summons, charged past them and closed in on us…

We needed some crowd control and we needed it now. Stallen took out his instrument and strummed up a magical tune that had the effect of fascinating the ogre. Good, he was out of the battle while the rest of us could focus on the lesser foes or until a skeleton decided to charge the lesser giant.

This strategy actually worked out better than planned as Karish charged into the web, unaffected thanks to his magical ring, and you could see the fear and shock on the orcs archers’ faces as the barbarian hacked and cleaved them down.

We gathered around the fascinated ogre in a circle of death as Stallen kept the momentum of the song up and with a knowing wink, Eldiritch plunged his magical short sword into the back of the ogre to its hilt as Karish swung down with his sword and split the beasts chest almost clear open. It barely shrieked in pain before being cut-off in death and landed with a mighty thud. Our group erupted in a chorus of cheer, but we all secretly knew this ogre was nowhere near the strength of the one we encountered earlier in the moathouse. A strong and formidable foe, no doubt, but not half as strong as Lareth’s personal bodyguard was, but still an achievement nonetheless. We slept and re-learned our spells and journeyed forth with our pockets a little heavier with their coin.

We awoke and it was still dark when we explored more of the area. Eldiritch was sneaking through the heavy brush when he heard before he saw the heavy, almost unnatural, breathing and growling of some beast. Some large beast…

Just as the thief turned to leave he stepped on a branch that snapped and the giant dire boar became alerted. ‘Uh-oh’, was the only thing he quickly said without looking back and bolting to the safety of the group just as casters began to summon bait to occupy the magical boar.

The main group pelted the beast from afar from ranged weapons as casters kept summoning spider, wolf, and dog to occupy the beast’s wrath. As soon as we would complete the spell and our ‘pet’ would appear, the boar would make a mighty swipe with a paw or bite from his giant maw and kill the thing. Just when we thought it would out last our spells, the beast dropped dead from all the arrows and bolts protruding from it and we let out a huge sigh of relief.

We gathered up and went back to our niche in the brush and slept the rest of the night till morning, not too far from where we had a previous battle, and moved out, exploring more of the area…

We went north and crept ahead and discovered a gnoll and a bugbear, looking the veteran warrior, greeting us from atop a large boulder outcropping. They shouted down to us, much like the goblin and kobold before them, and threatened us, much like their brethren before them as well.

And just like before, they disappeared before we could get a shot off and we cursed our luck. We sent up Eldiritch, for like before, an enemy contingent would typically await us in ambush. This time was no different…

‘Wow, an ogre shaman,’ whispered Eldiritch. He’d heard about these from tavern tales and reported his find back to the group. We prepared ourselves for a big fight and following the steps mentioned before, we carried through our actions in almost flawless display…

‘Perfect,’ exclaimed Stallen, as the battle went without a hitch. The ogre shaman was too webbed and pelted with arrows to even get off a spell and like before, we circled the greased and webbed enemy dispatching them with ease as they tried to escape. We rued the day such tactics would be used against us as some of us felt a little wiser and stronger. We looted the dead and went back to our safe spot and rested again before setting out once more, but we came back a different path and heard the many sounds of wolves and howls before actually seeing them. What was worse was that they were led by a large orc…

We would need a good plan to take these on, but decided to discuss over some ale and meat and a good rest. We awoke at sunset and decided to take this pack of wolves on like we did everything else, and so it began with a web spell…

But it didn’t end how recent battles ended, and while we thought we would easily dispatch these beasts, our hubris almost got the better of us. Karish charged into the webs and attacked the giant wolves only to be almost torn to pieces…

[WOW. A 29 point critical hit?! Karish was down and the other wolves were circling the prey to do him in. This was going to be tough] Karish was down and bleeding out, what’s worse is that another wolf got loose of the web and was circling around. The orc trainer was almost dead, having slipped in the grease and stuck in the webs as Raimol and our casters filled him with arrow or bolt, but the fact our lead warrior was down and out was the most pressing of all. Kumari shouted to move aside and attempted a cure moderate wounds spell only to be pounced upon by another wolf, disrupting the spell in mid-incantation.

More arrows and bolts flew through the air at the giant dire wolf to try and kill it before it would end Karish’s life as Kumari and Zert attacked the lesser wolf that disrupted her spell so she could cast another one. Time was running out and so was Karish’s life as his blood mixed with the red sands of the setting sun…

[Next time... What will happen? How will this battle end? Will this be the end of Karish or even our party? Find out, in the next episode! DA-DA -DUMMmmmmmm … Stay tuned for Chapter 9!]

Chapter 9

[Last we ventured we had cleared just about half of the Hickory Branch area and encountered ambush after ambush of demi-humans and humanoids such as goblins, orcs, hobgoblins, and even an ogre. We were taking on another group of various wolves, (wargs, dire wolves, wolves) led by an orc trainer that was as good as dead, but then so was Karish. Taking two critical blows from a dire wolf, he was down on the ground bleeding out and those around him were engaged in other fights to get to him. We gathered our party and continued the battle…]

Karish was down and bleeding out, what’s worse is that another wolf got loose of the web and was circling around.

Time was running out and so was Karish’s life as his blood mixed with the red sands of the setting sun.

Zert knew what he had to do and slashed at the dire wolf that was attacking Karish and carried through with a cleave into the lesser wolf that was also in front of him leaving both dead at this feet. Just then, Kumari finished her incantation and let off a moderate heal wounds on Karish that brought him back to his feet.

The rest of the fight went by without a hitch as we finished off the dying canines and took care of the orc trainer. This fight taught us another lesson which was that any fight, no matter how easy it seemed, could be our last if we weren’t careful and we took this wisdom back to our camp to rest on. Zert, certainly earning the most valuable party member that fight, thought long and hard on his skills and slept soundly.

We awoke the next day with spells ready, a new vigor, and a game plan to explore more of the area until we find these fleeing humanoids we keep encountering. We gathered our packs and moved out. It wasn’t long before we came across an orc lieutenant and as if on cue he shouted and began a speech much like the ones before him. This one demanded we turn ourselves in and after laughing at the idea he ran off towards a great cliff in the distance.

This time we gave chase and encountered another group lying in wait and in hushed step and whispered command prepared to attack.

We played it smart this time, learning from our previous fight and even though this would be easy, we made no unnecessary moves that would jeopardize us. The web launched in, catching almost all of them by surprise. Then the grease spells tripped those caught in the webs and finally the summoned spiders spawned in to attack the stricken orcs. Instead of getting too close just yet, we charmed some of them to fight for our cause and then decided to mop-up.

Karish charged up north and took on the archers that were trying to pelt our casters as they continued the summons. Zert and Eldiritch were outside the grease circle and dispatched the fallen orcs as they were stuck in the webs.

We were left with an orc warrior who was fighting for us and we slowly formed a circle of death around him.

Eldiritch wiped the dirty blood off his sword just as the orc fighter gasped his last breath. He looked around and saw a chest on a raised dais that was now unattended and definitely needing some attention and he had just the tools for the job. Karish was busy looting the dead when he noticed one of them wearing some ornate bone armor, and after changing the gear out, decided he would be much better equipped with the armor than the dead orc.

‘A perfect fit’ grunted the barbarian just as Eldiritch cut the wire on the chest that would have released a deadly trap. ‘Smooth,’ whispered the thief, congratulating himself as he began picking the lock.

Inside, some gems, a small sum of coins, and some more healing potions, ‘Not a bad haul,’ said Eldiritch matter-of-factly. Xiamaru was busy throwing all the dead orcs armor and weapons in the magic chest to sell later for coin as Kumari made sure everyone was ok from the last fight. We decided to explore a little more before returning to our camp. Eldiritch snuck south and beyond a low wall heard the tell-tale sounds of a large animal. Upon further inspecting, a great dire bear was revealed and it was determined we would tackle this later. He returned to the group and we went back to camp to rest.

We were mid-sleep when we were attacked by kobolds. Thank the gods Stallen was on watch and woke everyone up before they got too close. We quickly dispatched the small lizard-like demi-humans and continued our sleep.

We awoke early morning and felt a little ‘enlightened’. These past days, weeks even, of constant fighting and battling has done us good and we were beginning to see the effects from it. We were stronger, more agile, learned more spells, and Kumari’s god bestowed on her more un-divine spells. With this added advantage we felt better prepared for what lay in wait.

[Oh yea! Ding! Time to level up and here’s the honest rolls as they came:

Stallen 25hp to 33hp
Karish 43hp to 56hp
Eldiritch 25hp to 30hp
Kumari 19hp to 23hp
Xiamaru 19hp

Awesome rolls, probably the best ‘group rolls’ yet and I felt a little better tackling more of the stuff this game had to throw at me. Time to move on!]

We journeyed out from our camp into the early morning light and went back to where we took out the orcs and opened the chest. We went further south from there and came upon the back ranks of some assembled orc archers and gnolls. We had the element of surprise and used it to our advantage as we let the spells fly along with the ranged missile weapons.

Our system had been working well. Web, grease, summoned spiders that weren’t hampered by the webs and poisoned the enemy, Karish running into the webs with his ring of free movement and Stallen, Eldiritch, Raimol firing into the stunned foes while Zert was on guard at the edge of the webs waiting for any monsters to escape. Kumari would summon a blazing red scythe that would often cut down the helpless foes, and like before, we did well this fight. A loose bugbear tried to rush the casters and met Zert and Karish instead which was the end of him.

We took the rest of them out without problem and after looting the fallen headed south. Eldiritch uncovered the looks of a ruined temple with some snakes, rather giant snakes that seemed to guard the place. We had encountered a giant snake before in the moat house and took these two down much like we did before.

It was time to rest though, and we headed back to our camping spot for further rest and memorizing of spells. The next day we headed out and explored more of the area until Eldiritch spotted an orc captain, much like the rest of the threatening humanoids before him.

This one introduced himself as Lord Krunch and after his petty threats ran off towards the looming cliff in the distance. Stallen let loose an arrow but it fell short. We journeyed ahead and this time saw a pretty good size force lying in wait. Like before, we began the process of taking out our foes, and after they fell, we beat upon the door that the captain must have run through.

We beat and hammered the door until it finally broke down and decided we needed some rest before entering.

After yet another rest to which Eldiritch complained, ‘must we sleep so goddamn much?’ the party returned to the great cave opening and expected the worst. This looked to be where all the previous commanders, be they orc, gnoll, kobold, or goblin ran off to, or at least the direction, and it didn’t take a wizard to know they weren’t too far off. We equipped our ranged weapons expecting the typical web/grease combination opening and looking back we realized that was our first mistake for as we entered, they were upon us.

This was not good, we were all equipped with ranged weapons, even Karish, and they were charging us in melee which further complicated things with area-effect spells like web and grease. We scrambled to change out our weapons as they attacked and let loose our barrage of area-effect spells in the back of their party.

Zert took a mighty blow by their head commander, a giant of an orc that wielded a huge double-headed battle-axe.

Kumari rushed in to heal Zert and was slashed by Lord Krunch, the other massive orc we met outside earlier. This disrupted her spell just as he took another blow by one of the gnolls. Edliritch was busy engaged in melee trying to hold off both the goblin and kobold warrior-rogues at the same time while Karish was trying to take out a bugbear along with a summoned bear by our group. A half-orc shaman cast a bless on their group and Stallen fascinated the orc commander with the axe.

Zert hunkered down behind his shield, trying to deflect all blows directed at him before help could arrive. The few remaining undead we had with us were off attacking enemies at random and often times dying in one or two blows and just as Stallen was keeping their commander Lord Hungous busy with his playing, a zombie attacked the commander which broke the spell and resulted in a mighty counter-strike that killed the zombie outright. Pishella charmed a gnoll to fight for us and Kumari couldn’t get close enough to heal Zert without getting attacked by some nearby enemies. They had a witch with them which cast a spell of silence that made things worse for us and just as Zert hunkered down behind his shield, thinking himself safe, a giant axe head came crashing down splintering the shield in two and blasting through his defenses. He quickly tried to bring up his sword to parry but the orc was too quick and the orc spun his giant weapon around and chopped down on Zert almost cleaving him in two. Our warrior follower and friend slid off Lord Hungous’s axe dead before he hit the ground with eyes wide open in permanent shock.

What followed was a blur and truthfully, no one remembered the specifics, but right after Zert fell, we knew this fight was for real. This could be it, our demise, we could die here, and one of us already did. Karish slashed and killed the bugbear he was fighting just as Stallen charmed the goblin to fight the kobold he was right next to. Pishella charmed another orc, Lord Krunch I believe, and he turned on his commander in mid-swing with a surprise blow that cleaved half his life away. At this point we had many of them charmed and pulled back some to let them fight amongst themselves as we focused fire on the witch in the back disrupting her spells along with the half-orc shaman.

One by one they fell, and were it not for the charms; the battle would have ended here. Our charmed gnoll, orc, and goblin with our help made mincemeat out of them and even the witch and shaman fell to our missile weapons. We were left with only one of their gnolls alive, and heavily wounded at that. They had killed their own lord as we watched on and we did the same to the gnoll after the fight was over. We gathered around Zert and were shocked at the extent of his wounds, or rather, the fatal wound that did him in.

We took a blanket and wrapped up Zert and closed his eyes as Kumari ordered the zombies to carry him as we looted the dead. They had some obvious magical equipment and the lord had an ornate key that easily opened the chest in the back of the room. Xiamaru also felt a little enlightened, and had some good news…

‘Fireball,’ he said, somewhat proud, as he finally made sense of the words in the giant tome he carried around. ‘Too bad I didn’t learn it before this fight.’ The group was solemn and the joy of finding all this loot and winning this battle was hampered by the recent death of Zert. This was becoming too common and we feared we wouldn’t be able to raise him this time due to lack of funds or the extensity of his wounds. We put all their items in our magical chest and became determined to help Zert, having just vanquished this orc uprising, surely the town would help us. We began the trip back.

We arrived in Hommlet after a good two days march and having the zombies carry Zert’s lifeless corpse helped, but unfortunately masked his decomposing smell. We gathered outside the Welcome Wench and decided what to do. We needed money for the priests to raise him and needed to sell first so we headed to the town smith.

‘What’s this?’ pointing at the locked chest near the smith. The constantly-hammering smith looked up and explained this new chest next to him.

The smith said we could have anything in the chest except the item his friend wanted if we could only open it. Eldiritch flexed his arms and cracked his knuckles as he began removing small tools from his pouch. ‘This is gonna be easy,’ chided the thief as he went to work. After some sharp intakes of breath and quiet clicking sounds, there was an audible click, and the chest’s lock opened up falling to the ground. The smith opened the chest and took out a hammer and left the rest of the contents to us.

“Hmmm, a book and what appears to be a magical horn. Not only should we return to the inn to rest but I’ll need to memorize some identify spells to learn what most of these items are we got from the orcs. We can then sell what we can’t use to help pay to bring Zert back. Speaking of which, what’s it going to cost?’ The bard has just returned from the church where he discovered the cost to raise Zert would be 6,000gp, and the next time would be double that, then double that, etc. At some point far too soon, we would not be able to raise anyone. For now, we should have enough after we sell some of this equipment and went to the inn to rest bringing the corpse of Zert with us much to the dissatisfaction of the inn proprietor. We slept a couple nights, with Zert and the zombies in a different room, learning identify spells and uncovering the items we found of their magical properties when we realized Zert was … no longer with us.

‘We must have waited too long’ said Kumari as she looked upon his stinking corpse, or what remained of it. Zert was left in a separate room with the zombies due to the smell, but now looked worse than the undead he was with. [Ahhh crap. I had no idea, but it made sense. Apparently, corpses decompose in the game and if you wait too long they turn to dust or bones and leave behind their equipment. So much for raising the warrior – he was forever dead now. Now I realized what some of these magical spells I had seen were for – they helped prolong the dead so they wouldn’t turn to bones so fast]

We took the remains of our follower outside and buried him behind the tavern next to the river and returned to the inn after a short ceremony. Zert was a good warrior and would be remembered, but his adventures would end here. We lacked a front armsman and talked to the tavern keeper for some time about guests of the inn and just as we were thumbing through the guest book on the front desk we heard what can only be described as a loud dwarven shout, ‘GIVE ME MY GOLD YOU THIEF! Hand it over you cheat or I’ll chop off yer hands!’ We all turned around and saw a stout dwarf reach for his axe as Furnok, the tavern gambler, was hastily throwing money at the pissed-off dwarf. We all looked back at the guest book at what must only be…

Stallen walked over and introduced himself, ‘Greetings dwarf. Name’s Stallen and I’m here with a group of … (a slight pause).. adventurers and we could use the axe of a strong warrior like you.’ The dwarf was just putting his axe away and began picking up his coins when he turned to Stallen and looked behind at the rest of the group. ‘Shove off’ menaced the dwarf as he continued picking up his coins. Stallen, a little taken aback, said, ‘Those coins you gather off the floor there are nothing compared to what you could have travelling with us.’ It was then that Stallen noticed the axe the dwarf had was pretty battered and near useless, hopefully from battle. ‘Look, I’ll make you a deal. We have an ‘in’ with the town smith who has a large selection of mastercraft weapons. Come with us, choose the finest axe you can and any armor as well and join us for a full share of any loot we find. What say you?’

The dwarf stopped picking up the coins and moved his thick and meaty hand to finger the near-blunt and chipped blade of his axe. He turned around and again looked at Stallen and the rest of the group that was still back at the front desk of the inn. ‘Thorin Pax is me name. Killing is me game and you get yerself a deal…half-breed’. Stallen smiled and they walked outside as a group to the smith where the dwarf picked out the best axe he could find.

We decided to get to know this dwarf, for he would be travelling with us and be responsible for our safety as we would his. We spent the next couple of days at the inn, learning his history, drinking, reveling with the locals when Xiamaru, removed from the group, began thumbing through the magical book they found aptly named, ‘The Book of Heroes’…

* * * * *
[Next time...Zert is gone, but we have a new companion now, a dwarf named Thorin Pax and although we realize he isn’t as experienced as us, he’s got the potential to be a great warrior and tank for the party. We end this chapter in the Inn of the Welcome Wench but what is the book Xiamaru is reading? What tales does it have? And why are the pictures moving as he is reading it? DA-DA -DUMMmmmmmm … Stay tuned for Chapter 10!]
