I dont want to look at a walkthrough but would like some tips. I've done all the maps except one block is still greyed out at bonfire. I've done 3 of the "great" souls. I don't know what else to do.

Either Laddersmith from Earthen Peak will sell you ladders (he should be sitting near the pit anyway) or you get enough HP/cat ring to jump down yourself. Shrine of Winter (path to Drangleic Castle) requires 4 great souls or at least 1 million soul memory.

If you have enough HP (1k is safe) you can survive the initial fall if you are at 0 weight.

Well if it's between the cat ring and the ladder, I'd argue that the ring is the superior investment. The ladder aint much cheaper and you're only going to use it once, maybe twice max.

I have no idea how you're supposed to ever know about it from game but his defenses scale with the amount of giant souls you have, it's totally retarded. If you have like one soul his defenses are like 30x more or something, lol.

There are a couple of master smiths in the game: one can be found in the jail right before the bridge heading to the elevator going down to Sinner's Rise, while the other can be found by using the key you get from a petrified enemy in the Shaded Woods, and you can use the key on a door located after a drop not to far from where you fought the giant basilisk in that same area. Note that this blacksmith later relocates to the Lower Brightstone Cove bonfire.

As for Vendrick: normally he has 32 times the defense he normally has. For each Giant Soul you have this is halved, reaching normal 1x defense when you have all five. Three can be found when interacting with the petrified giants in the Forest of Fallen Giants, one after a hidden door in Black Gulch (you have to drop down somewhere) and the final one by defeating the optional boss at the end of the area you're currently in. When you have all of them (though the last can be a bitch to obtain) you can go defeat Vendrick. And when you've beaten him, go back to the Shrine of Amana and go look for a door around the second bonfire. Make sure you're human though.

Also, when you get the quest item in that area go pay a visit to the place where you fought The Duke's Dear Freya for a nice bonus.

Vendrick is just an optional thing. He's just a poor hollow dude whom you have no reason to kill.

I've never put it together myself, but isn't a bad "riddle". The description even vaguely hints at it.

And hey, if you have 10-15 minutes to kill why not try out bleed?

Killed Vendrick, entered some dream with Young Vendrick. Can't kill him.

Beat em' tho I never mastered how to dodge the fire attack. Just run and pray.

Vendrick said something about crowns. Do I start the DLC now? I'm not sure which serpent fountain to enter, as some are still "closed."

Is there any particular order I should do the DLCs in?
