What do you guys think of the old English style localizations of DQ1-3? I've noticed that they used the same style for the relocalizations in the mobile remakes. Since I've been playing with fan translations that stick to contemporary English (to reflect the contemporary Japanese probably used in the original scripts), I've been feeling like I'm missing out. I saw some footage of DQ2 and the dialogue seemed a lot more fun to read. In my version with the fan translation, you get revived and the guy reviving you just says something like "Be careful next time!", but in the official localization, he scolds you, saying something like "Hmm, I suppose I should revive thee now, though thou dost deserve less". I'm always for faithfulness in localization, but I also have a soft spot for that kind of dialogue.

I’ve only played 2/3/5/11. I quite liked the translation with faux olde english, it fit the setting and was serviceable at worst, charming at best..

When I tried the snes version of 5 a few years ago it was a popular fan translation and the spelling/syntax errors were a big put-off.. I only made it about 10 hours, I’d like to pick it up again sometime. Anyone know if the ps2 “port” is worth playing?

I played the English patched Dragon Quest 5 for Playstation 2 a few years back, and it was one of the better games in the series, IMO. I can't recall if the translation was flawless, but it wasn't too bad.

I was considering to get more of the version on IOS for the gamepad. DQ1 is charming enough but after watching the video of the Dragon Warrior video being harder I begin to agree they keep making easier versions. Naturally, my first dozen times beating the game was on the NES Dragon Warrior version and not the Dragon Quest from Japan version.

Can anyone point me to a collection of translated DQ manuals and/or guides? I'm starting on DQ3, but I already feel like there's loads of information I'm missing out on, like what exactly each class does, and what each personality means. I tried looking for some but they're all in Japanese. I could just read the American NES manuals, I guess, but then I'm missing out on Akira Toriyama's artwork, and that's like half the reason to read one of these manuals.

You play them in order... the hardest versions. Let me say DW2 nes was fucking annoying but I kicked Maleoth's ass twice. Once on real hardware and once on emulation (which is meh since you can save state). But i never played 3+ because of other west pc games.

The hardest version of DQ2 means the famicom version, which has a busted difficulty curve because it was rushed and thus never balanced or playtested properly (also uses a password based save). Even the US DW2 release made major balance fixes (especially in the end-game), let alone GBC and SFC.

Edit: To illustrate how broken early releases were, one of your three party members just stops getting new equipment in the NES/SFC release, being stuck with a +20 attack Iron Spear (compared to the +80 of the hero and the +12 the magic focused princess gets almost instantly) and has such low growths most Japanese fanart of the game depicts him as being dead.

DQ7 was an extremely long and tedious game. Played it on emulator, speed up is necessary for regular battles. The game wasn't particularly challenging, and the difficulty went down to basically trivial after unlocking the class changes. Grind a little and get your party into tier 2 classes, and the game will be trivial for the rest of the game. Paladin was particularly busted with that 0mp cost vacuum sword AOE that did 80-100 damage. Fisticuffs got a similar type of move in DQ8 which was also busted.

You guys ever read the Dragon Warrior 3 manual (as in, the US version)? They include a complete walkthrough of the whole game in there.

thanks, I think I'll just stick with having 11 under me. it was extremely long, cute, pretty, and featured great music. I do regret playing it on Hard though, as it made the final act a chore.

hltb says 40 hours, not too crazy. I'll add it to the list dawg. We do have Persona 5 around the corner on GP. Never played a Persona before.

Playing DW2 on NES because I heard it was more hardcore and I got bored of the SNES version. It's harder in the beginning but the rest of the game is about the same difficulty wise so far. My first character's at around level 16 or so, and I've got 3 of the crests.
