It's too bad Clouds of Xeen is so easy.
Using Day of Protection, Day of Sorcery, Lloyd's Beacon, the magic mirrors and the fountains in Vertigo, Nightshadow and Rivercity there is no challenge anymore. Especially the fountain in Rivercity means you never have to rest anymore or waste time in Temples, since it will always work for a character who has less then max Spell Points, so you can cast all Revitalize and buffings spells you want without worrying about the spell points cost.
MM1 and 2 were fully of nerve wrecking fights, while so far in Clouds of Xeen the only hard fights were against the Dwarf King, the Yak Liches (if unprepared) and the Yak Master.
If the combat system wasn't so simplistic I think it could have been fun to try the game without using any buffs from spells and fountains, and rely on equipment for protection agains the elements.
Still it is a fun game for exploring and looting.

So I have started playing MM6 and I'm plundering abandoned temple in the first location.

These numbers of enemies are ridiculous, after every room I need to fall back, rest in the tavern and heal poison, so far I spent more time running to the temple than actual fighting. Does the game looks like that all the time?

And the intro is just fucking awesome:lol:

No, the rest of the game has even more enemies.
But later you'll have access to Lloyd's Beacon and Town Portal, so it's easy to teleport to a healing fountain or temple and then teleport back to fight more.

Starting out can be difficult, the learnin curve is high. You should either take the standard party or go with two fighters, a cleric and a sorcerer. Don't bother with mix classes like druids, paladins, archers. Stay in the overworld first. Dungeons are ALWAYS lethal.. and even if you have a craving, Goblinwatch Keep is probably a lot easier than the Forsaken Temple. If you have trouble taking on the goblins outside, go right from the entrance to New Sorpigal and then right again to the path between the hills, where you will face apprentice mages. They're very easy, if memory serves only the journeyman mages have projectile attacks, and fall like flies. For now, use turn based (Return) for fights until you are better geared. When things turn bad, turn 180°, switch turn-based off and run. No enemy is faster than you especially as they zig-zag when in real time.
Note that electric bolt spells will always hit but only if enemies are not moving (i.e. turn based) while the flame arrow has marginally higher damage but a very improbable hit rate.

Some fountains in town heal you, but only a limited amount of times per.. month, day? I am not sure there. Healing in the temple is usually preferable to resting, but NOT in the temple of Baa.

Also, when you have enough money, check the stables, and when available, go to Castle Ironfist with the cart. Not only do they have a shop for bows and crossbows which you should equip your party with ASAP, it also has "Follower of Baa" enemies which are as pathetic as peasant NPCs and have no long range projectile attacks. Gun them down for money and XP profits, and then train a few levels in the training hall. Collect horseshoes near the stables but save them for now (+2 skillpoints on use, best used later on when SPs are hard to come by). Be diligent with skillpoint spending, only spend on skills you are sure you will USE. I.e. fighter with axe, sword and spear is not that useful. Spear and sword can be useful since she can potentially wield both at the same time when achieving Master rank in both of them. But that's a bit too advanced for now.

Always join ALL guilds, it is inexpensive and comes in handy later.

I hope this helps. As you gain more tactical options and spells, the difficulty looses up a bit, but it is true, the enemy hordes are always numerous and belligerent.

Don't explain me the basics, it's not like I die permanently and often, mostly run turning turn based off after 3 of my squad mates are down, it's not the problem.

I think I failed with picking up an archer, because he's pretty much useless so far, but my sorcerer and knight are mowing down shit nicely.

One advantage for the archer -> Starts with a bow. Apart from that, yes, useless. Even more so after everyone gets a ranged weapon which at first are more stronger.

Just finished Clouds of Xeen:

DctJl.jpg

I used the default party.
Didn't kill the Yak Master and I didn't explore the lava area, so the score could have been higher.
I finished the game on Day 98 of 612 so I used three years game time.
In real time I only used six days, so Clouds of Xeen is definitely shorter than the previous M&M games. I used two weeks on MM3 and nearly three weeks on MM2.
I also think it was the weakest M&M game so far - too watered down and streamlined compared to its predecessors.
The character development and constant item upgrades is what makes this game fun. It's also more balanced than MM3. In MM3 you could find caches on Obsidian gear early in the game, while in MM4 I didn't even find any Obsidian stuff. I didn't bother with unplugging the Cave of Illusions and thus making the safes "real", or pumping up Might to open the sarcophagi in Castle Basenji, though.

Onwards to the Darkside!

MM4 alone isn't that great, but the combined WoX is what makes it one of my favorite CRPGs. It gets pretty bizarre as you go on, but it's still great.

Heh, the Darkside Goblins and Gremlins sure look bizarre (most of the Cloudside monster merely look goofy).
And finally getting some NPC interaction and getting multiple choice answeres, including calling the Gremling King an insect, is an incline. :)

And whaddayaknow, again we meet Joe. Joe was the fake pest control guy in Vertigo, then he left town and set up shop teaching merchant skill, and now he's selling fake treasure maps in Castleview. Busy guy! I wonder who the real Joe was? Probably someone who offended Jon Van Caneghem even more than Scorpia did. :D

World of Xeen: so what hell is up with that Lava Cave? First three levels of demons, devils and lava, then Shangri-La, and then suddenly the dungeon of Castle Alamar? :?

IIRC it's a one way thing (a barrier of some sort contains the room that connects the two along with some treasure, something like that?); I can't remember if it's a reward for getting through the lava cave and lets you go through the dungeon, or if it's some puzzle in the dungeon that rewards you with a shortcut to Shangri-La. There's also a secret entrance from cloudside.

At any rate, the lava cave is one of the toughest areas in the game. Or it's supposed to be. I forget if it actually was. I think the major demons can instakill or something?

There were some levers on one of the Lava Cave levels, but I never found out what it did.

Nah, the Demons and Devils didn't even make a scratch with their fire and frost attacks. I think one of them had a different attack but it didn't affect any of my party.
Green and Red Dragons are a pushover too, but a Frost Dragon did some damage in the Dragon Cave so I found out it was better to head back to the Darkside and explore more there.
I think the Dragon Tower is supposed to be the toughest area? And I guess the key to it is in the Dragon Cave.

I remember playing M&M 9, but it was SHIT.

Is VI any better, because I would like to try this series.

I think MM3 is the best one to start off with. MM 1&2 are good in their own right but can be extremely tedious.

Also as others have mentioned WoX is a good game but can come across as bland. Darkside can be challenging but seemed a bit on the short side. MM3 is basically WoX condensed IMHO. Or WoX is MM3 bloated. However you wanna look at it.

So what stats do I need to open to safes on the second level of Queen Kalindra's Castle?
My Robber (after buffing) is lvl 56, has 222 Luck and 170 Thievery, but still has "No Luck".

So what now?
My guys are level 53-56 and have nowhere to train, since I don't have a pass to Olympus and no idea where to look for it.
Dungeon of Death?
Dragon Cave?
Isle of Illusions? Not tempting, since I hate those Minotaurs.
Explore more of outdoor Darkside? I've done all the towers.
Alamar's basement?
And how do I access that small area in the south west part of the sewers under Necropolis? Neither Etherialize nor Teleport works.

this month´s updates:

Might and Magic X
Press Release: October 1st, 2012

Might and Magic X: Children of the Void

Project Update: October 1st, 2012

It is now October and we’ve been working hard for three months solid. This project has been around for quite some time and up until this year we had not yet become truly serious and dedicated with a definite direction in mind. In July the team decided to produce a tutorial level as the first part of the game. My philosophy is, if we can to make one part of the game, we can make the other parts in the same fashion and using the same procedures. As always, we struggle with completing the massive amount of work this project entails, especially since September was the beginning of the fall semester and many project members are also students. Despite some challenges and setbacks, losing a few project members here and there, MMX continues forward.

Concept Art Digest: October

This month we are releasing more concept art - in particular some of the human NPCs that are being designed. These are going to be the peasants and nobles that roam the world - at least the human parts of the world. There will be a variety of races that you will encounter, some friendly and some hostile. The concept art is designed by artists primarily to inspire the level designers and 3d modelers, and provide reference images and examples of what the game could look like. Concept art remains very important, and even more so when we're talking about specific characters in MMX.

3d Ad

3d design is the most important aspect of game design for Might and Magic X. For this fact, we require as much help as we can get in the Level Design Department. We do need lots more help in order to produce 3d models, fully detailed, textured and, in some cases, animated, in a timely manner. To achieve this goal, the MMX team is going to release a 3d advertisement somewhere in the middle of October to recruit more 3d designers to join us. Talent is a must, passion is a must, and work ethic is a must. Needless to say, you must want to develop a super awesome video game and have what it takes to work hard at it!

Worldbuilding

What makes the worlds of Might and Magic so fascinating? The MMX team will set off this month on a journey to figure out this mysterious phenomenon that immerses and literally consumes you into the virtual world. Be ready for multi-dimensional characters, flourishing, lush, diversely populated regions, complex histories full of emotional turmoil, obscure dungeons that might make you cry, and mind-blowing, sometimes sinister plot twists and devices. Yes, this will certainly be a game to remember. We, the developers of Might and Magic X solemnly swear to put our hearts and soul into the game we’re creating. If you’d like to be a part of this nonprofit collaborative, now is as good a time as any!

Thank you my friends!

Sincerely,

MMXAlamar
President of Might and Magic X

Well, I would like to say that what started as a 2d FF-like project has become quite something. I always dreamed of creating a Might and Magic-like game. These last couple of years I was able to achieve that. I have to say after the gameplay testing I have done myself, I am happy to say you will feel right at home with LOE if you are a Might and Magic fan! Although I haven't had long gameplay tests since about a year and half or so ago... back then I had over 20 hours of gameplay time. Much has been added since. I have already mentioned this, but all of the promotion quests (both 1st and 2nd) have been fully written up. The equipment, spells, etc... databases are complete. The scripts that make LOE Might and Magic are complete. The Legend of Erthia will be a completed project! My dialogue and quest writer (Paul) has already written up 50 side quests above the promotion quests. LOE will be a large and challenging game. I currently have over 53 maps which is comparable to Might and Magic VI.
Thanks again to the fans who are also encouraging the development of LOE!

I also want to thank Ubisoft for keeping the Might and Magic name alive.

I've run out of shit to play lately, so I rezzed my MM7 playthrough, one that I've abandoned, uh, a year ago or so.

You know what I really like about the Might and Magic series in general? Getting back to an abandoned playthrough is extremely easy. Only had to check out some maps and stuff for orientation, and it felt like I haven't even dropped the game at all.

I also love how it shamelessly recycles so many assets from Homm3. Now that's resource management.

Clouds of Xeen: My Sorceror with 240 INT tried to read the book "The Art of Taxation", but it's too difficult for his inferior intellect to grasp.
I think JVC was trying to tell us something.

You won't be able to train again before you manage to handle those lovely minotaurs and their gorgon friends. They have to be defeated even in a MM5 only game so you should be able to do so with all the benefits you gained from MM4.
