WOW JOURNALISTS ARE GIVING A MICROSOFT GAME GOOD REVIEWS? I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS OH MY GOD THIS MUST BE THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME HOW DID OBSIDIAN DO IT? AMAZING UNDERDOG PERFORMANCE BY THE RECENTLY ACQUIRED STUDIO

The only reason a titanic backed game gets bad reviews is if it's unplayable due to bugs.

Wow, those are some good scores. Nice job Cainarsky

edit: yup it's a Cainarsky game all right

I suspect given the complexity of all the interlocking systems here that the game may prove to be hilariously unbalanced in one direction or another. In fact, given my own experience, I strongly suspect it. Near the very end of my playthrough, I used the respec machine onboard my ship, the Unreliable, to swap all my skill points so I could upgrade my favorite science weapon, the Prismatic Hammer, for relatively cheap, and then I swapped back to my bruiser build. (You’re technically free to respec as much as you want, but the price doubles each time, so you’ll want to use the feature sparingly.) My damage before had been around 500 points per attack. After about two minutes of work and few thousand bits, I bumped it up to over 10,000 a swing. I dropped the final boss in two hits.

There must've been some funny scenes around the Obsidian offices.

<knock knock>
Tim: Come in... oh, hi Josh!
Josh: Hey boys, I've been playtesting this and I have a few suggestions
Tim & Leonard: GO AWAY
Josh: (quietly closes door)

Reviews look about as good as one could reasonably expect. Eurogamer is the only one slightly negative so far, and I can't take them seriously anymore after they spent half of KCD review whining about Vavra's politics and music he privately listens to.

Eurogamer review get critizized in their own comments

So I’ve not followed outer world news, and this review really doesn’t deliver. How is the shooting? How much loot is there? Does it effect your characters look? How in depth are the side quests? How difficult is it? Do your actions/dialogues have any meaningful impact on the world? Can you romance? Can you have companions? Can they die? What are the standout skills in the skill trees? Are there any or are they dull? Do you feel powerful by the end? How viable is a melee character? How crucial are the RPG mechanics? What’s the graphics like?

Sounds like you couldn’t get over the fact it wasn’t as satirical as you wanted and have focused way too much on that leaving it devoid of any actual hard details about playing this game other than ‘It’s ok’. How’s the inventory system? How’s the UI? Which games do it better? If you had to liken it to a game already out there what would it be? We need more specific details and less beard stroking.

Rather than say anything about unchecked corporatism, The Outer Worlds just portrays its excesses, seemingly hoping that players will draw their own conclusions even when it’s unwilling to do the same.

For better or worse, The Outer Worlds is a perfectly middle-of-the-road open-world RPG. It doesn’t take any big risks, but that also keeps it from falling on its face. Despite some great writing, the game doesn’t have much to say about the corporate dystopia it establishes, ultimately playing it too safe to justify the premise.

What did he expect, a serious critique of capitalism in a comedy game where you can have gun that literally melts people's faces?
