For those who are interesting in experiencing a company's descent from blockbuster success to hilarious failure, ScummVM has added support for Trilobyte's entire library, including The 11th Guest, Clandestiny, Tender Loving Care, and (lol) Uncle Henry's Playhouse, the last of which is probably the biggest commercial flop in video game history. Fun times!

I don't think, there was a constant decline in Trilobyte's output, rather that their releases in general are uneven with hits and misses.

The 7th guest - for the most part - was only a success, because it was one of the first CD-ROM games on the PC and featuring video scenes with real actors, which was a novelty at that time.
The game itself was OK - just a game with puzzles - but nothing special. Story and actors were a little bit cheesy, but also OK for this setting.

The sequel, the 11th guest was already a terrible game IMO, where many puzzles were retarded - especially the sequences where you had to find a specific item in the house based on senseless clues. The ending board game also left a bad taste.
The story was absolutely BS, too.
E.g. in one video, a character recounts the incident, when she was raped by "the house".
:what:

How should that work?

This scene was supposed to be dramatic, but I couldn't stop laughing because of the absurdity.
Also the movie sequences (with the exception of the ending) were completely separated from the game itself. After you solved certain puzzles, just some video snippets played, that told part of the story that happened before you enter the house - with no relation to the puzzle you solved before.

I think Tender Loving Care and Point of View were actually not released by Trilobyte, but by Aftermath Media, which had two of the same members (one co-founder), but otherwise were not identical.

While not really games, both of these were very good Interactive Movies.
If you are not into this kind of thing, you'll of course not like these. But you can't say they were bad per se.

I can't comment on the other games you mentioned, since I haven't played them.

Whether the dreams brought on the fever or the fever brought on the dreams Walter Gilman
did not know.
- H.P. Lovecraft, The Dreams in the Witch House

DITWH_2.gif

The_Story.png

Arkham, Massachusetts 1929. Walter Gilman, a promising math student, has just moved to the city and is starting his studies at Miskatonic University. The Dombrowski’s boarding house where he resides has a bad reputation, but Walter doesn’t mind the old rumors... Until the dreams start. A hideous scheme is underway, and if Walter is not careful, it could cost him more than his life. It could cost him his soul.

New_kind_of.png

Dreams in the Witch House is a unique mix of classic point and click adventure and open world RPG. The gameplay is nonlinear and many of the elements are generated randomly, making each playthrough different.

You have two months to prepare Walter for the dreaded May-Eve. How you spend the time is completely up to you: concentrate on studies, get friends and stay in good physical and mental state. Or explore the old rumours, read the forbidden books at Miskatonic University, and work on your occult thesis. Or just stay in bed, and hope that it all goes away!

Based on the short story "The Dreams in the Witch House" by H.P. Lovecraft.

Features.png

  • Open world sandbox meets point and click adventure game
  • RPG elements: money, health, sanity, and many character stats
  • Day / evening / night - cycles and changing weather
  • Several endings depending on player’s actions
  • 10 - 20 hours of playtime
  • Original soundtrack by genre favourite Troy Sterling Nies (The Call of Cthulhu, The Whisperer in the Darkness)
  • Creeping tension: otherwordly threats intensify gradually
  • 320 x 180 pixel graphics
  • Plenty of detailed animation and visual effects

I was referring less to a decline in quality (I basically agree with you that even their best game was mediocre), but more to the fact that they went from selling 1 million copies, to 500k, to 20k, to 187 (yes 187).

Who's Lila is a point-and-click adventure where, instead of choosing dialogue options, you control the character's face manually.

Interrogation.gif

Life’s never been easy for William, but today is special – a girl named Tanya Kennedy suddenly goes missing and the only thing Will's friends know – he was the one to see her last.

Will you remain secretive and make William act as though nothing happened, or will you let true emotions show through his mask?

In Who's Lila, a specifically trained face-recognizing neural network allows you to make this choice! In dialogue, instead of choosing a text option, input facial expressions by moving parts of the character’s face. The neural network will then analyze the emotion and output the result, thus progressing the plot.

Stealth.gif

Apart from the struggles provided by your own face, you will be met with a gritty dither-punk world of Who’s Lila. Prepare yourself for dream-like landscapes, surreal architecture, steam-filled factory interiors, and David Lynch-inspired beauty of the industrial and the mundane.

Will you make sense of this strange story, or will you lose yourself in the beautiful mystery? Will you try to discover every possible turn of events, or will you stick to a single storyline?
And most importantly, will you be able to answer the ultimate question:

Who is Lila?

Ellie.gif

Features:
  • Neural network-powered emotion detection
  • 15 endings and choice-driven gameplay
  • Steam achievements
  • Ditherpunk visual style
  • 6+ hours of gameplay
  • Unlockable palettes
  • 50+ unique soundtrack pieces written specifically for the game
  • And more..

The adventure game genre didn't get to live too long, but boy, did it prosper!

At any rate, the game seems interesting, although I feat it may be a bit gimmicky. Then again, I thought the same thing about Obra Dinn and it was pretty awesome.

I agree, I'm wondering how well the mechanic holds up over 6 hours. I do see an inventory in some of the screens so I'm assuming there's more standard adventure game interactions as well. Probably wont bite on this one until some reviews come out but It looks cool and a little disturbing.

A quest to find your pants.

A classic style adventure game about life and finding your pants. The more our hero tries to find them, the more things seem to spin out of control. The tone is funny but also kind of introspective, following the kind of crappy morning that makes you rethink every decision you’ve ever made while wandering around in your underwear.

banner01.gif

This is a very short game!

title_short02.gif

banner02.png

Solve retro style point-and-click puzzles on your quest to get out of the house.
Intricate, detailed pixel art brings a rainy workday morning to life.

coffee_short02.gif

banner03.png

Offbeat humour and a touching emotional journey. Will he find his pants? There’s only one way to find out!

bathroom_short02.gif

And always remember- you are more than the sum of your pants.

Good: Is this the sequel to the "Don't shit on your pants" classic?
Bad: Faux retro-style pixel art that is barely tolerable. At least you can see something here, which is not always the case.

Sierra-inspired is maybe a better description. Interface is similar, and things like gaining points for solving optional puzzles.

From Lex to Rex is a point-and-click adventure game inspired by classics of this genre such as Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Hollywood Monsters and all the others you already know. It is about a plebeian who, tired of being hungry, decides to usurp the Rex! It is about the power of appearances using food as a common thread and strives to be funny and intelligent.

It's a quest where each room presents itself as a challenge.

PlataformaSaltoGif.gif

Lex Is Tired Of Being Hungry!
Your journey will take you through pixelated scenarios inhabited by peculiar characters from the medieval royalty. Forget the main plan and go straight to the plan B. Become a friend of a pig, start from below and make your way to the top, let a princess get angry, deceive a chef, use objects from the enviroment and from your inventory. Whatever it takes to become Rex! But were you the first to come up with that plan?

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard is a passion project I spent the last four years on. It's an old-school point & click adventure game that is reminiscent of the animated movies and Saturday morning cartoons of decades gone by. While it is obviously inspired by the LucasArts and Sierra point & click classics, it also strives to create its own style and identity by returning to the original “adventure” aspect of the genre. Aside from solving the obligatory inventory-based puzzles, this means a heavy focus on exploring mysterious lands, uncovering secrets and dealing with all kinds of dangers.
