It's not region locked, although Failcom seems to be having some problems with those Amazon keys right now and some people had to get in touch with their live support to get it sorted out.
Not sure if it's a problem with the keys or user error, 'cause I was able to register my key and make an account immediately with no trouble, but the people saying they had issues talk about trying to make accounts for every game under the sun.

Whatever the case, bought and downloading for hours and hours now. Just have to hope it's decent fun.

Damn, it's on sale for $15 at Amazon? I had no real interest in this game as a subscription MMORPG but for $15 I'm almost considering it. Is it worth it?

After careful consideration I think my $15 would be better spent getting drunk rather than on this game.

But you can kill more brain cells with this game!

Either way, there's at least 100 hours of quality content in TSW, as far as themepark MMO quality goes. But then again, if you hate MMOs, hate MMO tab-targeting combat etc, then you might indeed get more enjoyment out of some booze. :P

To be honest I had already talked myself out of it, but then a bro bit the bullet and ordered it and I decided to join 'em.

Though upon further reflection I'm not sure that was such a great idea for jolly cooperation. Sounds like this game is best served by taking your time and enjoying listening to the dialog and doing investigation puzzles and such. Not sure that'll hold up as well when you're playing with someone. Guess I'll see once this download finally finishes in (Maybe) 5 hours. :M

Good first impression. Only played a little bit, did the Illuminati tutorial and did a couple Kingsmouth quests. Combat seems more action-MMO than GW2's attempt at it and it seems to work a bit better. Voice acting and writing was pretty enjoyable thus far, not just for a MMORPG. Taking a while to figure out how the skills work but I'm getting it now. Cautiously optimistic!

Yeah, this is probably the most important advice I'd give to anyone starting out - take your time, listen to the NPCs and don't Google the quest solutions (other than when Googling is a part of the quest, which also happens :P).

NPCs have a ton of things to say if you bother listening, especially your Society handler.

They look like they will milk the hell out of it though, there is an option for a $200 pack when you enter your key, and the option to go ahead without buying either the supplemental $60 or $200 pack is hidden underneath.

Could this be this is a free-to-play game with all the microtransactions that come with it, and only very little of the pay online to access all the content without being nagged or limited all the time?

The game uses a very good F2P modell IMO. Everything which was free while subscriptions is free. You can buy cosmetic stuff for money (just like during subsciption) and a "XP gain accelator", which will yield you double XP for a few hours (but you can only use it once a day).

So can anyone who's played the game lay out a more truthful overlook at the various classes, factions and so forth during character creation? Makes it easier to consider whether or not to get it.

There are 3 factions to choose from (the videos linked are what you are shown in-game when choosing a faction):
The Illuminati: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyMoVrZmd5c
The Templars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dz8-2-vlj30
The Dragon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhM3VluLrZs

The difference between factions is fairly minor - each has their own HQ and you'll get different cutscenes during the main questline, but most of the game will be the same regardless of which faction you represent. There are no classes, you are free to put together your own build and every character can learn every skill - though it will take a very long time so you'll have to specialize somewhat.

No respec but there's apparently no cap on how many SP and AP you can earn so you can max everything if you play long enough. Later areas apparently give you gobs more XP, and your goals for reaching SP and AP thresholds don't change so an evening of late-area questing will get you a lot more points than an evening of early questing.

Can't do much more specific since I'm still figuring shit out myself.

In before everyone leaves after a month. Never playing MMOs with the codex again.
