Yeah but nobody is gonna fork out more than $500 for a console, Steam Machine or not.

I think the Steam OS and Controller will be a hit, but the Machines will flop hard.

They're going to market it as more than a console. If Alienware could exist, I think Valve can sell computers to people.

And the size will matter as well. It will basically be a nice and handsome mini ITX built with high-end specs.

Though smart gamer will likely build similar one with 70% of the price, only without all the SteamMachine logo sticker faggotry slapped on top of that.

I remember cursing myself being uninformed peasant when buying my built 2 years ago in ATX standard, when I could wait 4-5 months and get some nice little Fractal Design Node 304 with mini ITX mobo for LGA1155 processors (I think they introduced them about 4-5 months from my purchase as well) and high-end gpu.

Here's what it looks like in your library if a borrower is playing something:
Usgq0ME.jpg

It doesn't specify the game, that just shows up when you click on any installed game in your library. If you look at the person borrowing a game it doesn't list anywhere on their profile that they're playing a loaned game, just says "In-game: Game" as normal and lists played time and achievements as normal. It doesn't increase the games count on their Steam profile however, so it functions sort of like a free weekend game.

And here's what the authorized devices window looks like:
oZm2Fag.jpg

My computer is authorized but not used since my account is the only Steam account being used here. Second one is my friend's PC. Gives you the Steam account that last used something from that machine (Since you authorize machines instead of Steam accounts I assume if you authorized a machine that someone used multiple accounts on, all accounts on that machine would see your shared library) and last time it was accessed. Device name is whatever you want to type in when you authorize it.

One more thing I learned, people sharing your account can see your CD keys for applicable games. The one I tested it out on was Blood Bowl, and when he checked the CD key it was the same as on my account.

Wth Bioshock 2 being purged of GFWL, I think I'll download it and give it a go, I've had it on Steam for 3 years now and only tried it once.

And because I already owned it on Steam, I get the Minerva's Den DLC for free. W00t.

FAQ has been updated with Steam Machine specs:
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamuniverse#announcements/detail/2145128928746175450

What are the specs of the Valve prototype?
The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:
  • GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
  • CPU: some boxes with Intel : i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
  • RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB DDR5 (GPU)
  • Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
  • Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
  • Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high
This is insane, there's no game that uses even half of that! Why make such a product and make the customer pay for power that they won't use?

Er... well... people are using those high end cards now so I'm sure the idea is to test it on bleeding edge set ups with eyefinity, multi-monitor, etc.

So, I'm being literally SPAMMED with coupons by Steam here. All for shit and/or uninteresting games, of course. I like it how these drops completely circumvent my Wishlist.

I have a theory about why that is: My wallet amount. Except for the Shadow Warrior coupons, which I got for various reasons, I'm getting discount coupons for games that makes it so that I just can afford to buy them right now. 10%, 25%, 33%, 50% and in one case 90% off!

ooo oooo, what if the new game Obsidian is working on is a spiritual successor to V:tM-B so that Valve has an awesome RPG using source 2?

But we saw they were hiring people with Unreal/CryEngine experience for their secret project.

I'm so behind on tech, I don't even understand the significance of any of that hardware, aside from the RAM and hard disk capacity. Still don't know what SLI is about or why I would need it or not.

I don't know, it depends on the price. Obviously a Titan-equipped machine is not going to be cheap, but the lower-end one should be available for console-like prices next year.

SLI is when you have too much money to burn, so you buy TWO graphic cards and link them together, so that you can have double the power, double the energy waste and double the compatibility issues.

Plenty of games that don't keep consistent 60+ fps on i5 + 760 at high details and the only real upgrade from that is i7 + 780/Titan?

The offer seems really down to earth tbh. Cheap gaming rig i3 + 660, standard gaming rig i5 + 760, high end i7 + 780/titan.

You can probably find some 660's for less than that but, still, eventually computer components cost money. Not like you're going to pay less than $125 for a decent GPU.

You have to be really narrow minded to think that any gaming rig needs to run the latest AAA popamole shit at Ultra/60fps/1080p... especially when you're selling it to people that probably already have a Xbawks or PS3.
