I started a new game since I lost my old save states at some point, so don't worry if there are some discrepancies. This time, I decided not to hire SHADOW because he has a bad habit of leaving the party randomly. So, I had CELES join the Figaro-brothers and Locke on their rescue mission!

New monsters!

tsuGO.png

They enjoy FLASH, one of the new tools EDGAR bought in Figaro Castle:

FwqBi.png

Soon enough, we reach the house of this lunatic we heard about:

ZvORl.png

Doesn't look too bad...

d6C0j.png

Always remember to check pots for treasure:

Jt7lx.png

Lovely guy. Well, we can't even sleep in his bed, so it's time to head south.

SABIN has learned a new Blitz, called Fire Dance and it's very, very effective:

qMcSH.png

Any and every random encounter on the world map can now be solved by either EDGAR with Flash or SABIN with Firedance.

Thus, we reach the next town quickly and without trouble:

JIDOOR! Will we find Terra here? Will there be more angsty emotional moments ahead? Find out if this LP ever gets updated again!

Not much I can do about it - I don't have the original screenshots.

So, our heroes hit the shops to see if any upgrades are available. Not much but some is. We buy two White Dresses, so that we can upgrade TERRA's gear when we find her. It is a nice upgrade for CELES as well, as it raises Magic Power:

gznYV.png

30LhY.png

SABIN gets a nice little upgrade in the form of Kaiser Claw:

MVdUK.png

Then, it's time to play detective and interview all locals:

Whoa. So, it seems that Jidoor is the home of rich people and all the poor people have gone north to build this Zozo place. And the are all liars and thieves. Surely that's just the filthy rich capitalist oppressors badmouthing them? Seems we'll have to find out as the only clue of Terra is that she sped off north, to the mountains.

The richest man in town has an art gallery, highlight of it being a portrait of ULTROS. Are Chuthulhu-esque monsters some sort of celebrities? At least he had kindly left a Tincture lying in a pot for us. Plus, apparently CELES looks very, very much like some opera singer called Maria. This is probably useless information that will not come handy in the near future.

So, it's time for bed before the trek to Zozo:

Nice party.
I love how in this game, each character you bring along has a little extra tidbit in comments about something or other.
The little blurp between sabin and edgar aboard the airship when Celes goes to Edgar for the coin. Such great foretelling.
Not only that, but bringing in Cyan or any other character, like Gau, also results in some cool stuff.
Cyan especially in the magitek research facility.

Indeed I did. So, LOCKE leads our valiant party north, to find this disreputable village of poor liars and thieves.

4kzGq.png

North

PMTBp.png

and further north - there's no challenging mobs in that forest so it's safe to pass it -

A0s89.png

ah, a mountain pass, leading us -

4r8yV.png

to a town that doesn't look any different from Jidoor, except

1dm0u.png

well, it's raining.

The music for Zozo is pretty great, have a listen:

http://www.youtuberepeater.com/watch?v=lc5eBlwac6U

Can't embed youtuberepeater, for some reason, so just open it in different tab or something.

Btw, imgur is being a bitch about batch uploads, so I have to do this in bits & pieces. Fingers crossed everything goes flawlessly. Anyway, we immediately meet some friendly locals, eager to help us in our quest:

Uejce.png

Gabbldegak's are piss easy trash mobs. Best to use NoiseBlaster on them, so to make them confused, in which state they sometimes cast Vanish on the party - which is a very nice thing to have for reasons that I'll explain later. Harvesters are bloody thieves and if you let them live long enough, they WILL steal thousands of GP off you and then Escape. But with fairly high level party, killing groups like these is very easy. But for first timers, Zozo can be a total PITA - I remember being quite frustrated with this place as a kid.

Getting deeper into Zozo doesn't improve the initial impression at all. There's trash on the ground and corpses and all the buildings look semi-abandoned.

ukvgV.png

Better check out this Café place, though.

B2SOQ.png

An actual bartender, though he's not serving us anything except a cryptic message about a clock. MYSTERIOUS!

Pushing on, we meet another lovely denizen of Zozo, the homicidal exotic dancer:

7KbCi.png

You can steal good stuff off them and they aren't very strong either but, if they are facing the party alone, they have a nasty tendency of throwing a Level 2 elemental spell as their opener! There's really no way to stop it aside from getting Pre-emptive Attack and killing her quickly or having CELES use Runic. Luckily their Magic Power isn't too high, so it's not lethal - just taking off 90% or so of HP. Why the hell are they working as dancers in Zozo, instead of taking over Jidoor or Figaro, I'll never know.

The Cafe balcony looks desolate as well.

YM4Vs.png

Better push on.

Hmm, stairs and two doors? I smell treasure!

D1VVO.png

Ambushed by a single Harvester, EDGAR shows off the power of the Drill:

sV6jP.png

We open the right-side door and find a treasure chest:

93uq4.png

On the way to the left-side door, we meet the last of the denizens of Zozo, the big hulking brute:

coh8C.png

HadesGigas. Takes quite a bit of punishment and worse, has a special ability called Magnitude8, which is basically a Quake spell. Which is why the Imp spell, that CELES naturally knows, comes very handy:

B0GX2.png

Enemies turned into Imps can not use most of their special abilities. AuraBolt and Drill combo with Sabin wearing Earrings and Edgar wearing HyperWrist and AtlasArmlet is enough to kill him.

Why put Earrings on Sabin? Because his two most powerful Blitzes at this point, AuraBolt and FireDance, are both magical attacks and Earrings improve Magic Power. Meanwhile, most of Edgar's tools are Physical attacks, so HyperWrist, for increasing Vigor and AtlasArmlet, for increasing Battle Power, help him deal more damage that way.

So the giant is dead and we get to loot the other door:

YmsiN.png

Damn. Oh well, we'll continue exploring.

And just to show bad nasty this place is, there's a corpse of a girl here as well:

But this other guy is alive:

nL5fL.png

Is that so? Okay, we won't jump around.

Inside the Inn, there's nothing but an old clock:

0iWHL.png

VHxUO.png

PSstY.png

IQ4jt.png

DRDHs.png

Sorry, I forgot to take screenshots for the different options for minutes and seconds. But trust me, it was 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 for both.

This is a MYSTARY for sure. But wait, the bartender in the Cafe said that the second finger is pointing at 30? Maybe other denizens of Zozo will give us more clues.

We continue exploring, for now. In a place labelled as armoury, we find some loot:

UAaI2.png

Edge of Zozo looks just as ramshackle as the rest:

9X0wK.png

But we do find a lonely shopkeeper, with another hint:

6x8eb.png

What? Better take a look at the clock, then:

rvhA8.png

MYSTARY deepens.

We keep exploring:

ZQgM1.png

Il9T1.png

A-ha! A door. And we can enter! Let's see:

NGKqo.png

Allrighty. We'll check the top of this building. Is he lying about the first part or the second part? LOCKE will find out, soon enough!

We climb the stairs and come to a narrow, winding room with many locals wandering around. We interrogate each and every one of them:

BLTj1.png

Tvv7i.png

ou6eW.png

bchee.png

EnCgf.png

6bJuq.png

D4W3v.png

Screw you, old man!

NwJt1.png

Outside, we find this crane. It's actually the easy way down, because the wandering bozos very easily block the pathway.

So, we have several but conflicting hints about the puzzle. Which one is correct? Better keep moving.

We find treasure behind a door:

y7i4l.png

CCCeG.png

This is both good and bad. Capture is basically Fight and Steal combined, so LOCKE will jump over, try to steal and hit the monster. It's good because you'll do more damage, it's bad because from now on, LOCKE will ruin Muddle/Confusion from NoiseBlaster. Still, we're going to be stealing from bosses and it's not like EDGAR will use NoiseBlaster in every battle, so it's a good thing to wear.

Unfortunately, our path is blocked by this stupid wall.

gOsn5.png

But wait, there's that abandoned corner two stories below us, which leads to a window? And one of these liars said something about not jumping?

FUpZB.png

SCREW YOU GUYS!

R3NMI.png

HEROES MAKE THEIR OWN RULES!

TFZP3.png

I'M A LEAF ON THE WIND!

c12UF.png

WATCH ME SOAR!

2aK0n.png

Whew, that was close.

Well, no, it wasn't. It's actually impossible to fuck this up. It's an JRPG, not an action game.

tvJ4O.png

We enter and find a cunningly disguised pathway. Which actually leads to a dead end, so we need to find another one. Which we easily do.

ac6bt.png

We interrogate this bartender as well:

MyDIG.png

Oh really? We'll believe you... NOT.

But better keep moving, there's hopefully more hints still coming or otherwise it's going to take a lot of guesswork.

0PO2u.png

Seems like there's someone to talk to, plus a way of jumping back to the main building, just above us.

Dw6lE.png

Let me note that down.... bitch.

Then it's time for GERONIMO!

Ymvwv.png

CAN'T STOP ME NOW

MVDmi.png

I'M ON FIIIIIIIIIRE!

Ok, ok. Enough of that. There's a door right there and we enter, to find the mother of all staircases:

MugKB.png

1ao0f.png

YSEkL.png

Yeah, had to fight quite a few battles in there but I figured no-one is wanting to see a dozen nearly identical battle screens.

Finally, we're outside again and can climb the last floors:

KjxKQ.png

That door above us? It had some fancy loot:

Kqeq6.png

sSWpT.png

Just a tiny little improvement of 39 points! Plus, as the name says, it sometimes casts the Fire spell when attacking. Too bad SABIN almost never uses his Fight ability, since the Blitzes are so much more powerful.

Now who is this clown, blocking our path?

KMega.png

JGUtQ.png

AnbPU.png

LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE.

So yes, if you didn't guess it by now, those snobs in Jidoor were correct and everyone in Zozo is an pathological liar. Dadaluma is some weird combination of martial artist and thief. Who also has a nasty habit of throwing really annoying multi-target special abilities. So CELES takes away his special abilities:

HdDsO.png

cEHWA.png

Sure, he can still call for help and he still does respectable physical damage but hey, SABIN eats Iron Fists for breakfast and CELES can cast Cure, so the fight just turned very easy:

KhG3l.png

Especially since the Iron Fists are vulnerable to EDGAR's NoiseBlaster and are thus kept confused.

GPhn7.png

CELES has to heal us exactly once.

3EHbU.png

oB4XO.png

Dadaluma can still use items, so he actually managed to consume few Potions in there.

usCyW.png

8DnM8.png

But then the boys did what they do best. And that's that.

1BISy.png

Ah, the top. What shall we find here? TUNE IN, NEXT TIME! IN 2014!

We enter and find ourselves in this magnificent hallways. Zozo maybe a shitty cesspool but the penthouse suite is nice indeed.

CYAN and GAU appear magically here, even though we left them at Narshe. But hey, the whole idea that someone has to stay behind to "help defend XYZ" is a decent enough plot-justification for the game mechanic-dependent reason why only four people can be in a party at any single time.

Anyway, TERRA is angsting like there's no tomorrow since she's a freaky mutant. Meanwhile, Emperor Gestahl is sucking the life and magic out of Espers in some nefarious "research" centre, so while we wait for TERRA to recuperate, we might as well strike a blow for Returners and remove this magic battery that the Empire uses to create & power MagiTek Armours.

Fun fact, as a kid, I thought that Terra would get better with time, so I wasted a lot of time killing monsters around Zozo, waiting for her to get better so I could bring her along for the next part. Of course, she only recovers when the plot says so... well, at least I made the game quite a bit easier for myself, having grinded all spells to all party members. :M

For some background music, let's use the Zozo Theme, since it doesn't play very often and we'll soon get sick and tired of Terra's Theme:

Ah, LOCKE. Never change! You just want another chance to get into CELES's unitard.

Let's talk with this local who just appeared here:

HybXi.png

OKAY! ESPER TIME! That ghost would give us an tutorial about Espers but it's long and boring. Here's the important bits.
Each Esper gives us the chance of learning some spells, summoning them once per battle and some of them even grant us additional level-up bonuses.

VHbnE.png

LOCKE gets Ramuh, since LOCKE is generally a useful guy to have around and starts with fairly decent Magic Power, so it's imperative that we cover his lack of physical prowess with some magical powah! Learning Bolt2 will be a pain in the ass, but worth it. Also, Ramuh gives us +1 to Stamina if we have him equipped at level up. Unfortunately, Stamina is almost completely useless in FF6, as it governs only three things - how much HP Regen gives a character each tick, how much HP Poison takes away from character each tick, and Instant Death resistance. Regen is almost useless, Poison can actually be harmful as the more Stamina you have - the more damage Poison/Bio/Seizure cause, and to truly be immune to ID spells, we'd need to maximize Stamina to 255. So not really worth it, as you can only wear one Esper at a time.

In battle, we can summon Ramuh to deal some serious Lightning damage.

oYp7j.png

SABIN gets Kirin, since we need to spread around the Curing ability and his Blitzes make him a very useful guy for the moment - so he'll most likely be us for a long time, whereas CELES might not. Kirin doesn't give us any additional bonuses and in battle, it casts Regen on the whole party, which is pretty useless.

ZYrmN.png

CELES gets Siren, to round out her spells. Since she can already cast Cure, Antdot and Ice, I prefer to use Siren as her first Esper. She'll get Fire as a bonus but getting Mute and Slow are the important bits here, as having the ability to counter Hasted enemies and disabling their magical spells is extremely useful. The +10 HP doesn't mean that Celes gets +10% to her HP at level-up, it means that the number of hit points she would have gained at a level-up gets additional 10% - but from the amount she would have gotten anyway, not from her total. For example, let's think she's getting 80 HP more with the next level, having Siren equipped would increase that to 88 HP. So it's worthless, though there are some specific levels where the characters get much more HP than usual. Google it if you really want to know.

In battle, however, Siren is AWESOME, as it casts Mute on all enemies. Which is really useful when you meet a group of bosses who all (or several) cast spells.

pxkQh.png

Finally, EDGAR gets Stray. Because he'll need the Magic Power boost but mainly because he was the odd one out. Muddle is useless, Imp is very situational, as is Float which is also very difficult to get. But Stray will be passed around like the village harlot since an additional point of Magic Power on level-up is easily the best possible bonus we can get with only these four Espers available to us. In battle, Stray is only useful if EDGAR and his NoiseBlaster isn't present and you really, really need to get Muddle status on all enemies.

So, how do we learn spells then? Well, the Learn.Rate multiplies the number of Magic Points we get from combat encounters and once you have 100, vóila, the spell is learned:

vMEcK.png

MJ9ro.png

So the lower the Learn.Rate, the slower it takes to learn spells. Of course, some enemies (like most bosses) give far more magic points than just one.

Ah, you ask, but GarfunkeL, you awful cock-tease! What about that clock puzzle?

REVEALED IN NEXT UPDATE, i SAY!

WHICH COMES RIGHT NOW!

You don't need to solve the puzzle to clear Zozo, by the way. It's entirely optional. But let's review what we know.

  1. We need the hour setting, for which there were the following options:
    1. 2:00
    2. 4:00
    3. 6:00
    4. 8:00
    5. 10:00
    6. 12:00
  2. We need the minutes setting, for which there were the following options:
    1. 0:10
    2. 0:20
    3. 0:30
    4. 0:40
    5. 0:50
  3. We need the seconds setting, for which there were the same options:
    1. 0:00:10
    2. 0:00:20
    3. 0:00:30
    4. 0:00:40
    5. 0:00:50
Then, we got the clues from the locals. Except we know that they are all liars. In fact, they are incapable of speaking the truth. Our hints were:

B2SOQ.png

Which means that the seconds will NOT be 0:00:30 option.

6x8eb.png

rvhA8.png

Yet another lie! There is a minute hand and it's pointing at two! That means that the minutes should be 0:10 option.

MyDIG.png

Useless lying attempt, pig. Well, at least we know for sure that the minutes can't be 0:20 option.

As for seconds, we only got one other clue:

Dw6lE.png

Which means they aren't, leaving us the :10 and :50 options, since the first hint we got was that the :30 option was out.

So far, our best bet is 0:10:10 or 0:10:50. Time to figure out the hour:

bI7tw.png

EnCgf.png

bchee.png

ou6eW.png

Tvv7i.png

So, the lying bastards present us every possible time... except for six! So we'll go for 6:10:10 and if that doesn't work, 6:10:50!

...
....
.....
......
.....
....
...

Of course, 6:10:50 is the right combination.

7h3Dz.png

pYjpH.png

WOOOOOOOOOOOP WOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!

Chain Saw is pretty much the ultimate tool for EDGAR.
Here he is, using it on HadesGigas:

Csynz.png

It deals more damage than any other tool and has a 1-in-4, or 25%, chance of going for ID - instant death. Unfortunately, all bosses and many strong enemies are immune to ID, meaning that 25% of Chainsaw's theoretical damage output is actually wasted on misses. Drill is thus the better choice for all bosses, even on lower levels.

Anyway! We have Chainsaw, we know Terra is safe, we got some mysterious magical thingies and stuffies called Espers and now we need to find our way to the Southern Continent, which is under the iron fist of the Empire. With no ships sailing due to the current war status, we're in a jiffy. Maybe someone in Jidoor could help us?

That 25% of time, Chainsaw goes for ID - Instant Death. Too bad that nearly all bosses and many stronger monsters are immune to ID, meaning that Chainsaw misses and causes no damage.

SO WE HEAD TO JIDOOR!
http://www.youtuberepeater.com/watc...+music+ever+Top150+104+Final+fantasy+6+Jidoor

That's the theme for Jidoor, so open it in a different tab or window and let's do this!

I didn't take any screenshots for the march back south. We fought a few battles but nothing special and no-one learned any spells. As soon as we enter Jidoor, we start interrogating the locals, some of whom have new things to say:

Ke8zc.png

Well, actually, that's the only person with anything new to say. GAMBLER LIKES FLASHY GIRLS. Sounds like my kinda guy. Anyway, we go to the Owzer's house - that was the huge mansion with questionable art hanging on the walls. Here we meet some fat dude:

UcHHu.png

In case you can't make it out, in the above screenshot, CELES strikes a pose and snaps her fingers. It's awesome.

We also find a letter on the floor:

Sounds like both EDGAR and LOCKE will get even more competition in their quest for tail! Well, EDGAR seems to be out of the picture already, since his lecherous, womanizing ways are a totally informed ability.

YES. YES I WAS. YOU GONNA MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF IT? HUH! HUH!

So yeah, SETZER is one of the more awesome characters, story-wise, a scarred albino gambler who flies across the world in his airship and chases flashy ladies.

And how do you propose to do that, LOCKE?

Well, we first need to get to the Opera House, in any case:

cVW0l.png

yBNVX.png

8UVgx.png

Ah, and here we are.

Ok, that's all of the screenshots I have so now I actually need to play the game some more. Also, what's happening best is one the best scenes in a game filled with awesome scenes - if not THE best out of them all - so it must be perfect. TUNE IN, NEXT TIME!

So what is this opera?

Because in the game you never see the full thing, here's a video done by ElderGeek.com which shows the "full" opera as it's supposed to happen in the game.

Credits:
Composed and arranged by Nobuo Uematsu
Written by Yoshinori Kitase & Nobuo Uematsu
Performed by The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra
Sung by Emma Wetter, Fredrik Strid, and Johan Schinkler
Conducted by Arnie Roth
From the game by Squaresoft/Square-Enix
Sprite work, minor rewrites, animation, and video by Eliot Hagen

It's barely over ten minutes, so happy watching!

I equip LOCKE with Sprint Shoes, which allow him to run instead of walking. We're going to need that speed in near-future. With emulators, I don't usually waste Relic space with them, since I can just use turbo instead.

Real subtle, LOCKE. Now, save your face by complimenting her nicely or saying something-

SMc2Y.png

Truly, LOCKE is a smooth operator!

But CELES is more interested in exploring LOCKE's motivations and psyche.

HPWnT.png

fgpWU.png

Yes, Rachel. Remember we found out about her some time ago.

CELES is surprisingly astute.

Now, this isn't just window dressing. In the following scene, you are prompted three times for the next line and given two options. If you fail, well...

You're thrown out of the opera. You can re-enter, beg Impresario for another attempt. Fail four times and then it's GAME OVER screen.

But enough of that, onwards with the story:

X505E.png

CELES is ready to rock some snobs.

CDhAC.png

Deep breath and let's do this.

Now that's not me but I figured that the video is so much better than fifty screenshots, trying to catch all the poses, plus you'd lose out on the beautiful music. I swear, as a kid I thought Square had done some magic and "it's almost like voices". Seriously.

After this haunting performance, it's Scene 2 - The Ball.

DRAMATIC!

ooCjH.png

This is, again, really well done, as Ralse, the East Prince starts this line and then Draco, the West Prince, joins in. Even though their voices are just synth-bops on SNES.

dVrtm.png

Every girl's dream - having two men fight over her!
And trannies too, I guess.

With the dramatic entry concluded, camera switches back to the boys:

Are you impressed, CELES?

I bet she is.

8n3qS.png

Aaaaaaaaaaand that's the end of the famous FF6 Opera Scene. If you go to Youtube, there are literally dozens of different renditions of it, some with actual orchestras and opera singers and what not. Definitely beats Leliana's song from Dragon Age, if you even have to ask.

Wonder whether the opera critics approved of this version over the more traditional one?

In any case, the saga continues:

CELES rushes to the door but it's locked:

Yes, of course. If you remember from the beginning, Figaro coins have the face of EDGAR on one side, and the face of SABIN on the other. There's no "tails" side to the coins. CELES actually walks up to EDGAR in this cut scene but I must have missed taking a screenshot there.

LpFGp.png

Thus we find our heroes on the southern continent. SETZER stays behind to guard the airship, which we also cannot use for transportation at the moment.

But new towns, new monsters, a whole new continent to explore! Quite a drastic difference to later era Final Fantasies.

TUNE IN NEXT TIME! ACTION! DRAMA! LOVE! IT'S ALL HERE!
