The dance-fighting and the letter-sending parts are hilarious. Truth be told, I didn't remember either. I guess it's been a really long time since I played this game. (I still remember the train business from one of the previous updates, though, spooky.)

finalfantasyiiiuv110004q.png

Oh, a useful hint from Edgar. Jealous, mr.Womanizer-King?

finalfantasyiiiuv110004e.png

ICEBURN! Well, not really but Celes shoots Edgar's theories down quickly.

finalfantasyiiiuv110005.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110005c.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110005k.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110005j.png

Seems that Celes and Terra do not see eye-to-eye immediately even though they are both women and magic-users.

finalfantasyiiiuv110005.png

Ah, delicious drama!

finalfantasyiiiuv110005.png

We can check equipment and relics here and then report to Banon that we are ready.

finalfantasyiiiuv110005v.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110005.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110005.png

Just like when Locke rescued Terra with the help of the Moogles. These group fights were a unique innovation for FF6 at the time.

finalfantasyiiiuv110006.png

Let me explain my strategy. Two groups are enough to block the chokepoints near Banon, so I tried to make two balanced groups with Gau in reserve in case shit hits the fan.

First group is Terra, Locke and Edgar because Terra can heal, Locke is a decent fighter and Edgar is awesome with his tools.
Second group is Celes, Cyan and Sabin because Celes can heal, Cyan does good damage and Sabin kicks some serious ass with his kung-fu.

finalfantasyiiiuv110006.png

INCOMING! It's like that trailer-battle for DAO except it's actually not similar at all.

finalfantasyiiiuv110006l.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110006.png

Kefka, you so funny!

finalfantasyiiiuv110006x.png

Who could resist that insane laughter?

finalfantasyiiiuv110006.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110006a.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110006.png

Okey, teams are in position. If one group gets killed, they respawn at the save point with each character having 1 HP. That's why gay-Gau is infront of Banon, giving us hopefully time to bring the wounded team to full health and back to position before the enemy can reach Banon.

There are a dozen enemy groups with varying members:
finalfantasyiiiuv110007.png

Two troopes with a dog - kill the soldiers and the dog runs away.

finalfantasyiiiuv110007.png

Four troopers - easily killed by Edgar's BioBlaster. Hey, chemical warfare isn't illegal in FF-world.

finalfantasyiiiuv110007.png

A trooper and a war-dog. That mutt isn't afraid of anything so both have to be killed.

finalfantasyiiiuv110007i.png

Two troopers escorting a MagiTek-Armour. This is the most challenging group.

finalfantasyiiiuv110007q.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110007.png

It is possible to ambush the enemy if you are lucky - thus we deal more damage than usual.

finalfantasyiiiuv110007.png

We beat all enemy groups and close-in with Kefka.

finalfantasyiiiuv110008m.png

Kefka has a bodyguard though. Time to check with the team for final words before we jump in:

finalfantasyiiiuv110008.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110008.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110008h.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110008b.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110008.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110008.png

Seems everyone has a bone to pick with Kefka. ONWARDS TO GLORY!

finalfantasyiiiuv110008.png

The Rider is easily whacked by Team Alpha. Then Team Bravo strikes at Kefka!

finalfantasyiiiuv110008.png

Unfortunately, this instance of Kefka isn't very difficult at all. Sabin's AuraBolt and Cyan's Dispatch are enough to kill him in few turns.

finalfantasyiiiuv110008c.png

Kefka could kill us pretty easily with his spells but luckily Celes uses her Runic-ability to absorb magic, rendering Kefka mostly harmless as his spells only end up healing Celes.

To be honest, without Celes and her Runic-ability, this fight can be a killer.

finalfantasyiiiuv110009e.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110009.png

finalfantasyiiiuv110009.png

Yeah, we'll be waiting!

finalfantasyiiiuv110010.png

Gee Edgar, you are so perceptive!

...

I actually think that the reason why so often the characters state out what is happening on the screen is that the developers were afraid that players wouldn't pick up clues from the 16-bit GFX.

In any case, cue eerie music and change of viewpoint:

Locke will lead the hunt for our missing damsel, as such business is his specialty. Apparently much before Terra and Celes already. Edgar and Sabin will come along as the awesome-asskicking-brothers-of-fun.

And why eren't hey implemented in later FFs I have no idea. If anything the concept should have been developed further :/

Anyway, GarfunkeL, good luck with this LP.

This effort we'll be less humongous only in comparison to Andyman's FFVII lp and only because FFVII is shit.

Well, thanks to the BAA being inept idiots and a snowstorm causing chaos all over UK, my flight has been rebooked for after X-mas so I'm stuck and with time to spare.

So you got an update, Bee.

I like this game. But the strangest thing is that I went backwards.
I played FF7 first, then Chrono Trigger before this around 10 years ago.

Mini-update to test the suitability of the new Codex Gallery for LP-purposes.

********

We are just south of Narshe, the village in the mountains, ready to start our search for Terra. We'll head south towards Figaro Castle, as Travis advised us. Of course, the journey sees us fight some laughably low-level monsters:

and

both groups that we dispatch quickly and easily.

Without further interruptions, we arrive at Figaro Castle:

Castle Figaro! Ah, it's good to be home!

Sabin hasn't been home for a while, so he takes off as soon as we arrive.

Meanwhile, we'll visit one of the shopkeepers:

Ah, for once the party would have gotten free stuff from shopkeeper but noooo, Edgar has to go and be such a humane king.

We buy two new tools for Edgar: Flash & Drill. The former blinds all enemies, increasing their miss-chance while the latter only hits a single enemy but ignores armour, to some extent. I won't be using Flash that often, as usually you could as well just confuse them but Drill will be our anti-boss tool of choice!

The Chancellor greets us happily

Well, duh. It is Edgar's home!

Boring guy, let's visit the library.

So not only can the Castle dive under the sands (mind boggles), it can travel underground as long as there's sand - WTF, how does that work?!

Oh well, Edgar and Locke go to bed, alone, as this isn't a Bioware dating rpg.

MEANWHILE!

Sabin walks into the empty throne room.

If Sabin would now take the throne and declare himself as the king - now that would be an awesome plot twist! But instead he mopily looks around, like a sad puppy.

Except for almost burning down, thanks to Kefka. But we're not keeping you around for your perceptive mind, Sabin, so no fear.

Uh-oh. Emo flashback incoming!

Lot's of shouting and running. Seems like Sabin isn't taking his father's passing well.

DSC00036.jpg

A tender moment between brothers?

Interrupted by the MATRON!

Whom I imagine looks like this:
web-isg-KPD-Matron%20Mrs.E.C.Wright.jpg

Now there's a reason for civil war if I've ever heard of one.

Plot thickens!

Well, it is kinda important topic in a pseudo-medieval monarchy...

:(

Yeah, beat her up, Sabin! That'll teach her a lesson!

Sorry, they can and will.

Edgar already has the sensibilities of a king, it seems.

Good plan, boys.

There it goes!

Edgar appears!

That's exactly how my brother and I always banter. Uncanny. Well, maybe Japanese find sea-food related jokes delightful.

No Edgar, don't you start.

Training to be a Grand Master Kung-Fu guy while you bedded everything in Figaro wearing a skirt?

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: BROTHERS UNITED AGAIN

Just kidding, there are no achievements in this game.

Next morning, we get a move on, finding the Castle Engineer:

Damn right, skippy.

Under the sea earth...

Thanks, Mister Engineer.

Brand new continent! Never seen monsters! Unvisited cities! Mystery! Drama! Excitement! Action! All this and more - in only this LP! Stay tuned!

Next update might be before summer... or not.

So we head towards this little town first, checking out the locals.

Who turn out to be hungry. Oh well, I can demonstrate the power of the DRILL!

DRILL BABY DRILL!!!

Ahem,

We arrive in Kohlingen, in search of clues about Terra.

And that's why little girls get into trouble.

Ghost with gentle eyes? MYSTARY.

Okay, so it's obvious that they are talking about the new and improved Terra. South, eh? Then that's our next stop - after we finish with this place.

Ha-hum, building a colosseum? Let's keep that in mid.

You probably fapped, admit it.

No lack of houses in this place, in other words.

PLOT THICKENS!

We enter this abandoned house. Looks like Locke is going to go full emo.

Really?

FLASHBACK TIME!

ADVENTURE!

:BROFIST:

LOOT!

DANGER!

SACRIFICE!

TRAGEDY!

Locke climbs down and digs her ragged corpse up...

SADNESS!

HOPE!

CONFUSION!

SHOCK!

Locke gets thrown out, old-school style...

gran_torino.jpg

Were gonna? Were gonna? WHAT IN HEAVEN'S NAME COULD HE BE ALLUDING TO?!?!?

Ouch. That's gotta hurt, Locke.

Don't listen to him, he just wants Rachel for himself!

EVEN MORE TRAGEDY!

ghum_ghum_classroom_1231223806_1-sketch-weeping-woman.jpg

fullEmoBoy.jpg

But that's ok, Locke. She left us a present in the clock:

See? It's all good now, man, don't worry about it!

We visit the stores:

This place sells shuriken and other ninja-afflitiated equipment? What could this mean? For the intelligence-limited amongst you, that means that Shadow will be nearby. He can throw those items, affecting all enemies with what-ever reads in the title. I buy one each.

We also buy Mithril Shields times four and a single Head Band, just in case we bump into Shadow soon...

BUT BEFORE THAT!

We find a single house sitting apart from the rest. We enter and go down the stairs to the basement:

Uh-oh. I anticipate more emo-moments, shortly.

Uh, so Locke wanted this guy to preserve his lost love for all eternity, in stasis?

Glass_coffin.jpg

Romantic? Creepy?

FLASHBACK TIME!

Can't find the pic for "Bud here to fuck" so you'll have to contend with:
kill-bill-bill.jpg

who is just as creepy.

Yeah, Locke is one happy individual with no regrets.

We beat a hasty retreat and investigate the local inn:

Hey, we eat danger for breakfast.

Dogfood sure is expensive! No matter, we hire him on the spot even if the party does go bankrupt.
