Then do what they did with Dark Souls 2 and add an OPTION for easy mode instead of making the game itself easy mode. Appease veterans and new players alike.

Thief devs: We had to dumb the AI down

Earlier builds of upcoming Thief originally had AI that was so intelligent the engineers had to dumb it down so that players stood a chance.

That's according to game director Nic Cantin, who claims that guards were too realistic and they'd find protagonist Garrett without much trouble.

For the sake of keeping Thief a fun experience, the engineers had to tone things down slightly.

"The engineers were very proud," Cantin told ArabicGamers. "With the AI they did something that was really good, but when you were trying to distract a guard in that direction for example, they were so intelligent he'd anticipate you and find you and there'd be a big fight.

"So it was too realistic at some points and we had to balance those elements and spend a lot of time with AI to make sure there is no anticipation.

"It's not about being hyper-realistic, it's about being credible but it's still a game."

Lead level designer Daniel Windfield Schmidt said players would have to make use of the shadows to trick guards.

"This is where we also encourage the player to stay in the shadows," he added.

"So guards don't see as far as you because they can't see as well as you. This is about being Garrett, and how you see the world.

"So we wanted to have it where you could be right next to guards in the shadows but as long as you don't move then they can't see you, but they sense movement like real humans do."

"We didn't want for you to be completely safe [in shadow], but for you to be safer," concluded Cantin.

Thief will be released at the end of the month on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Decline is like sausages, it is best not to see one being made.

If only they'd kept the super AI for impossible mode or something. Could have been interesting to see it in action, even if the game wouldn't necessarily improve.

Yeah, it sounds a lot like BS's BS about how radiant AI in Oblivion was too powerful and had to be contained lest it usher in the mudcrab singularity (albeit not quite as audacious since EM hasn't spent months hyping it as a major feature). In both cases there's also probably some element of the truth - radiant NPCs killing each other over apples and Thiaf's guards randomly detecting you from the opposite side of the level or somesuch - but it's pretty obvious they're putting a positive spin on it.

I suspect it's at least half-BS, though perhaps not entirely. If it worked fully, it could have been either a difficulty setting or used in selected levels, or an expansion improvement (in which case they wouldn't raise it now).

My suspicion is that the programmers came up with an AI that worked well if you had a 'god's eye' (or programmers' eye) view of the game, but that looked arbitrary and unfair from the player's position. No AI is 'real' - it's a matter of how well the various game feedback creates an illusion of intelligence. If you don't have that illusion of intelligence, it doesn't matter how well the algorithms approximate 'realistic' behavious.

I suspect that they weren't able to provide the illusion of intelligence for their original AI, and so reverted to pre-existing tech.

I dont think porn is a selling point. We still have a lot of puritanical assholes around that are afraid of nudity in games.

If those puritans help this game tank, then we should accept their generous donation and grant a similarly generous indulgence--in the spirit of good faith.

Of course, if the game sells more through the controversy they cause, then they are still going to RPurGatory for a very, very long time.

Overall, this is a very shrewd move on the part of the developers. If they know they can secure an M rating then this is simply free advertisement masquerading as freedom of speech and artistic integrity.

I don't mind nudity at all, but it seems so out of place in Thief. And to be honest I'm not a fan of the whole peeping tom thing.

And we still have lots of real porn with real girls on the internet.
Being a purist (not a puritan) I'm not a fan of mixing porn and games.

Either way, Garrett has become quite the moralist...
