Putting the 'role' back in role-playing games since 2002.

  • Welcome to rpgcodex.net, a site dedicated to discussing computer based role-playing games in a free and open fashion. We're less strict than other forums, but please refer to the rules.

"This message is awaiting moderator approval": All new users must pass through our moderation queue before they will be able to post normally. Until your account has "passed" your posts will only be visible to yourself (and moderators) until they are approved. Give us a week to get around to approving / deleting / ignoring your mundane opinion on crap before hassling us about it. Once you have passed the moderation period (think of it as a test), you will be able to post normally, just like all the other retards.

This site was special because anybody could say anything they wanted but I see this site taking on more of a filtering and censorship role

What's with the new posters having to go through approval period? Is this site a wannabe Reddit or Facebook now? It's stupid to censor posters and lock the gate and not allow the free flow of ideas

there's a lot of newbies out there who won't post now because they don't want to bother going through the mandatory probationary period and we all miss out on good new content as a result.

If people spam with new accounts you just ban them or we use the community tools to ignore them I don't see what the big fucking deal is

Just the fact that I need to publish this opinion is already a loss.

"Special" is certainly one reputation this site has, I'll give you that.

I reported a guy saying that he stole the account he's using and the moderator's response was that I should report again only if he gets annoying about it. Truly, we have become Resetera.

My only complaint (as a new member) about the probation period is that it's hard to find any information about some of the limitations. Took me a while to find the obscure page where it says you can't post "reactions" for a year, or that some sub-forums are hidden.

You mean the rules.
A new member can't know it's due to the rules. I was looking for hidden buttons in places like the list of emojis, and also in prominent links like these:
https://rpgcodex.net/forums/help/terms/
https://rpgcodex.net/forums/help/help/

To even find the rules, you need to open https://rpgcodex.net/page.php?id=about where you can find a discrete link to https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads/rules-of-the-codex-enhanced-edition-directors-cut-2013.87048/ and then read down to:

"d) Things to Note
And last but not least, here are some things you should be aware of.
1. Ratings: You will likely see a bunch of colourful images underneath a lot of posts. It's our comprehensive rating system. It's designed to reduce some of the unnecessary one liner replies like "I agree". Because we're a prestigious and exclusive bunch, you will only be able to rate posts once you have been a member for 12 months or more."

I'm sure many new members don't look around like I did...

Speaking as someone who is always having brain farts in my daily life, I advise you to never admit to having trouble figuring something out - it's downright undignified.

But I did figure it out eventually. This is just usability feedback on behalf of other newcomers.

I also closed that popup right away - and I'm sure many other do as well - after which the rules page becomes hard to find again (why not link to the rules from the Terms and rules page, where you'd expect to find them?). Furthermore the popup text doesn't mention the Ratings limitation, so you must still read all the rules to learn about that. Why not use the empty Help page to inform about such things (as well as any other limitations, like hidden sub-forums)?

Because the ratings don't matter and the "hidden sub-forum" doesn't either, you're supposed to come here to talk about RPGs, the other crap you can do later

Oh maaaaan, you're closing things without reading them and complaining about people expecting you to read the rules on the rpgcodex where everyone is mad that video games are made for simpletons now. People are gonna start bullying you if you don't quit saying messed up stuff like that!!

Again this is not about me, but I won't bully you for your brain fart. :) I did read the rules at some time (not necessarily finding them from that popup link), and even remembered the gist of them. I didn't bookmark them though. Then recently a thread link lead to a sub-forum that was hidden without explanation, and I faintly remembered something about a 12 month period --where could I have read about that? Likely in the rules, but now they were a bit hard to find again, hence my friendly usability advice here.

and complaining about people expecting you to read the rules on the rpgcodex where everyone is mad that video games are made for simpletons now.
Isn't it in a forum's own interest that rules are easy to find? Good web- or game interface design lets the user or player find things in an intuitive manner. Not even in games should their own interface be part of the gameplay challenge in normal cases (interesting idea, though!).
