It took me almost 10 years.I joined recently (as in, just an account, was a lurker long before that) and the "week-long probationary period" was already over in 2 days for me. It's not a big deal.

Sounds to me like he realized retardo land is his natural habitat and he's mad because he can't actively post thereIt looks like Liberal is shit rating everyone here he doesn't like. Super passive-aggressive.
Protecting the site from spambots is not something I would call "censorship". I had to go through "approval period" and it's not a big deal. It takes, what, 20 posts? And you are free to post after that? Frankly, if that's what stopping these people then I doubt they would really contribute much good in the first place. Assuming we're talking about real people here (and not spambots). What's with the new posters having to go through approval period?
What's wrong with this? I see posts like that daily from so called veterans.Shedding a tear for the hundreds of "Does this game haz niggerz?" posts people never got to see because of this feature.
It drives away devs and therefore Infinitrons chances to suck their dickWhat's wrong with this? I see posts like that daily from so called veterans.Shedding a tear for the hundreds of "Does this game haz niggerz?" posts people never got to see because of this feature.
You don't know how possibly bad it could get if we opened the floodgates. If there's THAT MUCH spam to shield from the community then promote more community members to moderators and have them only delete/ban/filter spam (nothing else).
This is without a doubt the strangest response I've ever gotten to a post in my life. It made me blush lol
Lots of people here complain about having an ignore feature. Did you know that?Real talk though: let the community filter the content it doesn't want to see with the block/ignore feature.
It already does.Let the community report spam.
I don't think you fully grasp the ramifications of what you're stating here.Anybody should be able to join in and participate at any time on the conversation taking place here.
promote more community members to moderators
Please make up your mind, thank you.Anything else is just over moderation
No censorship takes place on RPG Codex. We don't do that here, and I don't care how much you think it does. You're wrong. You might be stupid, I don't know. You can call people faggots and kikes and niggers and say wild crazy shit like man landed on the moon once and no one here is going to censor you. You might have your stupid-assed opinion/post sent to Retardo Land, but that's not censorship. The question is why is censorship taking place ?
It could be. Would you like that?Because staff is on a power trip?
I can agree that sensitivity is a bit out of control in society in general right now, but as the saying goes you're barking up the wrong tree to be accusing RPG Codex of all places of being too sensitive. The more correct word to use would be "intolerant". We don't put up with stupidity here.Tired of the internet as a whole turning into this ultra sensitive censorship bullshit where you have to kiss the staff's ass in order to be able to participate in the discussion.
I am fine with all the moderation in the world when it protects the integrity of the community, the little guy/individual poster, the accessibility and organization of the community's content, etc. But as soon as staff members think they know what is best, or feel their opinion or ideas have more merit than someone else's, or simply enjoy the power of deleting/filtering content that they don't agree with (or like playing God on who they approve/deny the right to post) or as soon as they put money/profit/etc. over the health of the free flow of ideas, then it's a BIG TIME loss. Moderating/staffing an active message board is a job of SERVICE to the community, not an opportunity to lord over it.Lots of people here complain about having an ignore feature. Did you know that?Real talk though: let the community filter the content it doesn't want to see with the block/ignore feature.

Thank you for sharing your opinion (again), however.

I'm not making accusations I'm just stating my opinion on the topic of the censorship of user generated content on the internet in general. This is what i don't want you guys to become. So many websites out there built on the backs of the community and its user generated content have turned HARD on the community as their activity and popularity grew in the name of profit, "civility", access, publisher-pleasing, etc. PLEASE don't let that happen here. Anything that moves the needle towards more censorship has the hairs on the back of my neck perk up because of the reasons above. But as soon as staff members think they know what is best, or feel their opinion or ideas have more merit than someone else's, or simply enjoy the power of deleting/filtering content that they don't agree with (or like playing God on who they approve/deny the right to post) or as soon as they put money/profit/etc. over the health of the free flow of ideas, then it's a BIG TIME loss
Which staff members are doing this and where? Are you talking about Infinitron and game reviews or something, because, if so, that's a completely different subject.
We're still talking about the probationary period for new users, aren't we? How the fuck does having that constitute Codex moderators/administrators as "playing God"?
You're utterly delusional.
maybe lurk some more, you're woefully uninformed for someone who has been here for yearsWhy is the chat box gone on the main forum page? Why is there double authentication in order to post that has to be renewed every 30 days? (this is a gaming website not an ecommerce where CC info is kept) Why is there a mandatory probationary period in order to get approved to post ? all of these are barriers to the free flow of ideas/participation
why do staff members now have a "staff" ribbon on their profile/avatar like they need some special identifier to stand out from the rest of the community?
And these are just some of the changes I've noticed over the last few months/years ... im more of a lurker than poster so there could be other head scratching changes im overlooking
again willing to give you guys the benefit of the doubt (because you guys have earned it) but skeptical at the same time. And if nothing else just want an opportunity to state my opinion to leadership about the VERY slippery slope of censorship many other sites have gone down when leading an active community.
as soon as they put money/profit/etc. over the health of the free flow of ideas, then it's a BIG TIME loss.
Moderating/staffing an active message board is a job of SERVICE to the community
This is the problem right here with how a lot of community's are run. Just because mods aren't being paid doesn't mean they should be allowed to shit on the community and start pushing any buttons they want and giving zero fucks about their actions. Also just because there's no direct transfer of money from user to site admins doesn't mean we should all just shut up and be censored and watch one of our fav. hobby sites go to shit. But this site is built off the back of the user generated content that brings the traffic and ultimately however much money keeps the site running. The admins of the site are responsible and are applauded and adulated for creating a site we all love to contribute to, but the users are also responsible for the site's growth based on the passionate contributions of the many here. It's a symbiotic relationship between users and admins.as soon as they put money/profit/etc. over the health of the free flow of ideas, then it's a BIG TIME loss.
Yeah, Codex is a money making machine from what I hear. DU rolls around in a limo filled with stacks of cash, like a certain S. McDuck.
Moderating/staffing an active message board is a job of SERVICE to the community
Shit, I hope the mods stop getting paid so well for their time then.
While I don't know you and certainly don't think you're retarded, have you considered the possibility that you're just retarded?
But then why would anyone be a mod? This is the problem right here with how a lot of community's are run. It's frustrating when you've contributed somewhere for many years and then ownership of the site will completely SHIT ON the users by taking away long time features or adding draconian rules/processes that impact the ability to contribute or start censoring/filtering content that used to be ok in order to make the site more advertiser friendly etc. etc. etc.
