I played the original Tomb Raider just a year before the Remaster came out. Steam version, no patches, it runs through DOS Box, very authentic. Didn't notice any difference in enemy health between the versions.
The early game enemies have low hitpoints and go down quickly, except for the bears. Bats take one or two shots and drop, wolves don't take much either, they only become dangerous when they catch you in the open and overwhelm you by numerical superiority.
Mummies, Centaurs and Atlanteans are the only enemies that have high enough HP pools to justify using anything other than the starting pistols.
