Finally played TL1 recently. I think it qualifies as the most fully-realized proof-of-concept ever produced. I enjoyed it.
I like those Diablo loot-pinata/gear builders more than I should.
In fact, in eight hours a new private server is openeing for my all-time-favorite Diablo (and Nethack)-inspired Korean PvP loot grinder: Lineage 1.
Not sure brand new players would be able to get hooked because it's so involved and big and grindy and has some serious quirks; but it's made of nice sprites and painted tiles.

I haven't played any new games since Dark Fall: Lost Souls tricked me into buying it by lying about its movement.
I missed out on the beta (which is likely a good thing because it means I'll get more time with the whole game before I get bored of it). I think I'm going to go with a gun based engineer first and hope I can have an army of robots running around with me.

Who's up for doing some HC Elite the morning of the release (Starting around 9-10am, GMT -8)? I'll be rolling a defensive/support Engie as my first char, but deaths were pretty frequent in the beta, so who knows how long he'll last.

Pre-ordered it a long time ago... still reserve the right to bitch about development time.
I'm glad at least that development time was spent polishing the game and not polishing the majestic RMAH mechanics. Absolutely cannot wait for this game.
