Hmm. The game seems to have a rather elaborate editor so players can make new items, monsters, maps(?) and shit, but there's only 3 different classes to play with and no online.
I'm on the fence with this, but the lack of online really hurts.

It's a half price game. $20 is indie territory. Seems like all told it's quite a lot of bang for your buck to me.

Indie games shouldn't be given a free pass *just* because they are indie. That's like letting a kid cut you in line because he has cancer. See how pathetic that makes the game look?
I hope the game will be good and fun. I hope the editor will be good and easy, and I hope that the game will have a GOOD and ACTIVE modding community, but if not, it'll get boring without the option to play it with my friend.

Indie or not, 20 $ seems alright for a Diablo clone, especially if it has a lot of replay value.

Like I said, that remains to be seen. Let's hope most of the mods don't amount to shitty rooms with a chest filled with ph4t lewt so all the munchkins can fap over their new Star Destroyer Swords. I want to see some well designed dungeons.

There's some intuitive looking PrEditor videos onsite that give the gist of how the visual scripting bit to the modding goes. In terms of modding, the devs did mention some ways back tht it isn't outright impossible to add some kinda multiplayer for the game but it'd be crazy hard and require them to really throw some time and effort at it.

Between this and Din's Curse, lots of loot and good killing times ahead these next couple months.

I'm happy of this. It means the devs focused on the single player part and hopefully balanced it properly. It's certainly annoying if you prefer the multiplayer but I disliked Diablo 2 because it is obviously aimed at multiplayer with huges areas and nothing that interesting to find except hordes of monsters to kill and a quest once in a while to nudge you in one direction; there are also some small areas you can explore here and there but there is nothing that will really compel you to do that except more kills and maybe more loot, which you should already be drowning in. Compare it to Diablo's smaller areas that do not take so long to explore and the fact that pretty much every level has a quest or encounter tied to it. I do not play it all the time but every once in a while I like to fire it up and play a new game, and every time I do not know what quests I'll get or what enemies I'll encounter.

As I said before, I have high hopes for Torchlight because it has the potential to mix what made both Diablo games great while leaving the suck out of it. But I might get a nasty surprise, see that they decided that huge areas with nothing but monsters to kill is fun, etc.

Hence the "if".

Downloaded The Traitor Soul today...and it's utter shit. Useless, badly designed skills, cartoonish graphics, awful character development, boring dungeons. It is really a bad game.

And TTS is rather add-on for Undiscovered Realms, it contains all content from UR.

You make it sound like you paid $50 for the game. It is a low budget casual game, similar to Torchlight. Torchlight will be a very similar game, with just more wiz-bang features.

Badly designed? In what way?

What badly designed skills? They seem pretty typical.

Cartoon graphics? You mean like Torchlight? It's a casual game. The art style is family friendly.

Awful character development? Why? Because there are no skill trees? It is a budget game. It wasn't supposed to be super deep like Diablo 2. He didn't really have time for that. It was more like a proof of concept.

I agree the dungeons can get boring, but I think that happened mostly because the game was created by mostly one person in under a year. The add-ons continued with his tools and I think there was a limitation with what you could do with them.

If you don't like this type of game you probably won't like Torchlight.

To be honest, I think Travis hit the nail right on the head with FATE. It gave you a lot of bang for your buck. If you notice, almost every item looks in 3D how it does in 2D. I think that was a very important aspect of the item system that I hope Diablo 3 and Torchlight have.

All this talk made me want to replay Diablo. And this time I found this. If there is only one feature I wanted for the original Diablo, it was the ability to keep attacking when keeping the mouse button pressed.

I should have googled for that years ago.

Edit: it's easy to use but as usual follow the readme. In case it isn't clear, you should use the "install" (more like "activate") option only when you get into the game proper, so either Tristram if you started a new game or the dungeon if you reload. You need to alt-tab and do this each time you restart the game but it's very fast and easy to use.

Awesome. I agree, that is the only thing that keeps me from playing that game.

While we are on the topic. Does anyone know of any other game enhancing mods that doesn't change the original game too much?

I want to see some well designed dungeons.

What is an example of a well designed dungeon? Cuz I'm guessing this game is mostly cut-paste, at least from the editor videos I saw.

Personally I think the best dungeons would be completely custom made, like a mesh out of 3dmax, but this game uses randomization and from the editor videos it looks like cut-n-paste

A lot of people seem to be asking a lot from this game. It's basically a beefed up FATE. If you didn't like FATE, you probably won't like Torchlight. Simple as that.

Ho-lee shit. Thank you. Think I'll actually replay Diablo to get my juices flowing for Torchlight with this.

I actually checked a bit because I wondered the same thing but I realised that I kind of like the game as it is, and only the "one click - one attack" thing was annoying me. I stumbled upon The Hell mod, which seems to add a ton of new stuff. I don't plan to use it but you might be interested.

I also found a patch for Diablo 2 somewhere that does the opposite of DiabloClicker2: it forces you to click for each attack. The author said that a true Diablo session should end up with your hand in pain.

Actually, does anyone know how to fix the color distortion? I've tried winxp compatibility but it doesn't help. I think trying win95 works, but then it doesn't recognize the CD in the drive.

Are you running Vista? Did you try to enable 256 colour mode in the compatibility options? You might also want to play with the other options like themes and the like. I do not have this problem under XP but I solved some problems like that on my laptop running Win7 with old games.

Kill explorer.exe before starting the game. Vista and 7 do not like old low-color DDraw games.

Somebody needs to hack up a fix and possibly a resolution increase.

Thanks for the help. I got it working now by making sure everything was disabled in the compatibility settings. Originally I didn't disable the last box thinking it was irrelevant.

So now it works but...

when I alt-tab out to start DoubleClicker and go back in the game it is messed up again. And you can't start DoubleClicker before starting the game. Darn it.

Badly designed? In what way?

Example! After a few hours of playing you have dozens of strange potions like "coffee" or "eyesomething". These are supposed to cure blindness, and similar negative effects, but monsters will not blind you until you are a high level character. So, those potions are useless (and they do not stack! WTF!) and you have to throw them away from inventory all the time.

What badly designed skills? They seem pretty typical.

Example! Almost useless dual wielding skill (spending points at weapons skills im much more profitable). Or stupid haste skill. You have to wait 3 or 4 seconds to perform it, and it lasts for about 15 seconds. Useless shit.

Cartoon graphics? You mean like Torchlight? It's a casual game. The art style is family friendly.

You're right. But I am an adult person, and I don't like 'family friendly art styles' :)

Awful character development? Why? Because there are no skill trees? It is a budget game. It wasn't supposed to be super deep like Diablo 2. He didn't really have time for that. It was more like a proof of concept.

Rogue-likes doesn't have skill trees, and character development is the core of these games.

Try starting both from a batch file, use the "start" command to launch them as background tasks. You may need to insert a delay in between. Something like this:

START Diablo.exe
: 5 sec delay
TYPE NUL | CHOICE.COM /N /CY /TY,5 >NUL
START DoubleClicker.exe (or whatever the exe is named)

EDIT: Actually, this is not necessary. If you do like phanboy said and kill explorer.exe before starting Diablo you won't (shouldn't) have any problems.

'cept the mmo is due in 18 months, which implies it already being in development with the sp game.

I don't mind the three classes as long as they play differently. Diablo has only three classes and it is fun to replay the game with a different one, although the changes aren't that big, consisting mostly of the attack speed with some types of weapons, a unique and mostly useless class skill, and different stats derived from attributes. Still each managed to feel different from the others.

I played D2 once with Amazon, and was addicted how easy it was with all the archery skills, what with guided missiles or shooting 20 arrows at once. Later on, I tried with other characters and if felt like such a chore, I couldn't stomach more than an hour. The whole game is a click-fest, and once you're used to clicking in a general area to hit enemies with a bow, actually clicking on enemies was annoying.

True, and that's why I liked Divine Divinity's system to target the enemy closest to the cursor when you press CTRL. I like but I can live without.
