Part of the problem now is that everywhere is a Lustria Bowl.
The problem with Lustria isn't the many LLs, it's the corridor-like layout that is a pain to traverse without some sort of teleport stance.

Mountains of Mourn, World's Edge Mountains etc pretty much have the same problem
The series' map design has, overall, declined heavily from the times of Rome.
I’d argue that probably the only aspect of the series that has improved since then is the visual representation (which is kinda nothing burger of an achievement). All the ideas that addressed the strategic and tactical layers were dumped in favor of a more streamlined, flashy gameplay.
