Commodore Amiga was really a crap machine.
I love Fate Gates of Dawn gameplay but it is maddeningly slow. So I increased the CPU cycles and/or implemented FPU in the emulator but the game became unstable/unplayable. LOL, in DOS if you bought a better CPU you can play the games. Or in Dosbox you can pump up the cpu cycles. Because PC DOS had a great architecture.

Upping the cycles in DOS past what the dev expected can break some games too. When you increase the amount of cycles, you make the emulator process more instructions per time unit, but the internal system clock still processes at the same speed (and probably uses the same clock as the hosting computer). As a result, if you complete more operations than the programmer thought possible when he made the the program in a short time, you may end up with an invalid state. Another problem may come with the interactions with other peripherals. Of course, these are emulated too, but that doesn't change that if you keep sending too many instructions for the sound card to process, you will get the wrong sound of some sort. As for the FPU, that would only help if Gates of Dawn was specifically written to take advantage of the functionality. I don't know if that is the case, but I understand this to be actually rather rare.
