Turn-Based RPG recommendation? (Steam Sales)

LINK: Which RPG codex would you recommend from the Steam sales?

Even though the game list is filtered, it's hard to show only RPG games. The steam tag system and categories are a mess.

I am unsure if this type of post is allowed. Please do not hesitate to delete it.

RPG games
Hehe

From the list

Colony Ship - I found it to be shit but the dex seems to quite enjoy it
Underrail - Its good for 2 perhaps 3 playthroughs. I found it quite enjoyable. It's a game for autist, so keep that in mind.
Solasta - Has a lot of brown characters which ruined the story (skip through it), but the combat was quite good. Won't play DLC because of the turds.
ATOM RPG plus Trudograd - Great games. Highly recommended. I wish there were more.
Fabled Lands - I might have a soft spot for it because of the books, but damn, it was quite immersive, light hearted and fun
The Age of Decadence - It have mixed feelings on this one. A bit smug. It's worth trying though.
Legendes of Amberland II - I don't know about the second one, but the first one was good for a single playthrough. Has some really distinct humour though.

If anyone says BG3, just ignore it.

Just mentioning games that haven't been mentioned yet that I would recommend from your list.
Wrath of the Righteous (and Kingmaker and Rogue Trader): I like all the Owlcat games for different reasons. Wrath is a great epic power fantasy, Kingmaker feels more grounded and like you're building power on a somewhat more realistic curve, Rogue Trader has some well written companions and an interesting setting. Since you're looking for turn-based RPGs Rogue Trader was designed around turn-based while Wrath and Kingmaker are RTwP games with a turn-based mode (I play with RTwP myself, it seems like a lot of people do RTwP for trash mobs and turn based for the bosses though). Just to warn you though, Owlcat made some rather baffling choices regarding character progression in Rogue Trader and it gets tedious towards the end.
SKALD: Charming homage to older RPGs with enough QoL tweaks that I think it would be accessible even to someone who only plays more modern RPGs. Combat is a bit easy but not to the point of being dull. Has a fairly active codex thread if you're on the fence.
Vagrus: A bit different to most of the games on this list as while it does have turn based combat it's not really the point of the game nor is it a particularly big selling point (it's serviceable but not exceptional). The fun in Vagrus lies in working out own optimal trade route, piecing together bits of story and lore along the way and learning more about the setting. Far more compelling than I expected it to be and I'd recommend it highly.

Spellforce: Conquest of Eo. It just received a new DLC too. It's an RPG/Strategy hybrid tho.

Well this is a welcome event, a nice chance to fill up my backlog with a bunch of games I wanted. So I got a few combatfag games, probably Colony Ship later, but seeing Arkania here and having never really heard of it before. How would you sell it to me? It looks like a M&M game to me, using those German tabletop rules? Is that about right?

Realms of Arkania is party-based, with first person and overland map exploration, but then switches to a top down/isometric view on a grid for combat. I can't speak about the remakes, but the originals released in the mid-90's were very good. The mechanics are based on the Dark Eye ruleset, and there was a heavy focus on adventure preparation such has having the right equipment so you don't fall off a mountain, or herbs to cure diseases after battle.

I stopped to look at the recommendations, and I already have 90% of the games mentioned. And I haven't had time to play even a third of them, isn't that nice. I don't know if I should be happy or sad about this, but on the bright side, I have games to play for the next ten years.

Which is great since this looks like it's going to be one of those terrible decades for games, looking at most of the recent flops.

What's the difference from Gothic & Original? Does one use some harsh edgy gothic script?

After playing both games to death I am happy to report I no longer wish Original was Gothic; they are both beautiful games!
Hmmm.... I would probably play original first tbh then Gothic. I might even play both side by side as I did that with versions of Ultima, wasteland, bard's tale, wizardry, etc.

When you do that you play only so much then switch to a different platform and play to the same benchmark. I found it make you digest the game more and do the following: (unless really really desparate)
1. Do not use internet faq/walkthroughs
2. Do not use cluebooks
3. Play as blind & ignorant of the game as possible.
3. Physically map & take notes

Maybe, screenshot & make an album of pics for each adventure for blogging postings.
Make videos of gameplay (i struggled to even attempt this).

Some games i even record the music and sound fx via audacity.

There are many differences but mainly that Gothic takes itself more seriously, has a much harsher and moodier atmosphere, arguably better music, and the dungeons are much better (many more years of experience in making them). The gameplay has also been refined to almost perfect levels and iterated upon. Introduces several new elements which make the game both harder and also more interesting. It's a much more complete experience and you can tell it was a real passion project since they knew doing this wouldn't sell. It was a mission statement from the devs. What someone would call a master piece from a studio in medieval times, the technical term. A master's show piece.

My problem with Original was that Elminage: Gothic was a complete rejuvenation of my love for RPGs, one of the headiest experiences I'd had playing a game for many years, so I was riding an incredible high with the game after putting around 300 hours into it (multiple playthroughs, modding it).

Elminage: Original is fundamentally the same in terms of the basic gameplay but it was the first game in the new series, the devs were coming in hot off their Wizardry Empire games so it's not like this was their first attempt, they already knew exactly what they were doing, but they were trying new things with Elminage and refining the formula, and Gothic is the culmination of that vision.

Either way both of the localized Elminage games are must-play dungeon crawling RPGs. There's also a lot to be said for Original's lighthearted fantasy aesthetic as well, it really grows on you after a while. Makes the game a lot more cozy than Gothic.

Pretty sure this guy is a dexer. Or he has at least advertised his game here (pretty sure that is how I found it :-D).
