The first game took risks... Star Wars

If you want to take about taking risks, I'd say KOTOR 1's most notable achievement was in successfully exporting a formerly PC-exclusive style of RPG to consoles.

The Star Wars brand was in bad shape during the period after Phantom Menace and plenty of Star Wars games have failed. The Old Republic might be the biggest flop in gaming. The Star Wars brand alone won't carry a story/game.

What's great about KoToR II exactly? It's the same characters/universe established in KoToR (which you hate) but darker. In other words a sequel that improved on the original.

Setting/source material is merely a starting point, given enough creative freedom its interpretations and adaptions can vary wildly. Aside from the mechanics/engine, Kotor 2 only has superficial similarities to the original, in actuality it's far more of a spiritual successor to PST (with similar themes, characters and dialogue) than a real sequel to Kotor (which aped the movies and succeeded fairly well in capturing the same atmosphere/feel).

It's not just the often mentioned Kreia-Ravel comparison, two other major antagonists are a heavily scarred immortal who cannot die until you erode his belief and a ravenous planet-eating entity (both of them would feel right at home in a bizzare Planescape setting), a far cry from your average moustache twirling villain bent on world domination or a former hero that has fallen from the light.

The later was done incredibly well in "The dark knight" (Harvey Dent). I have yet to see anything remotely similar in movies or games.
