Awesome. Thanks for the heads up, this is a pretty great game although very daunting at first, not only because of the gameplay but because of the extreme Finnish-ness of it. But anyway, this could have almost went in RPG Discussion, because it's basically a survival roguelike.

Noyce. But this can only be installed today?
It would seem so. The installer seems to contact a server to see if the free install is still valid before launching the game installer.

I guess someone could theoretically hack that out but yeah, kind of annoying that you can only install it once. Maybe you can just copy/archive the installed files after and have them permanently? I'm sure you can probably do something like that.

My guess is that this should be totally possible to do.

Yeah, I just tried it: the post-installation files can be copied anywhere, even onto another computer, and it still works and remains registered. Good shit.

It's also a good gateway into roguelikes if you've never played one, it has a nice interface & tileset and a nice in-game manual and a playable tutorial, I recommend it even if you think roguelikes are not your thing, it might change your mind.

Um. Why does this look like a game which name I forget from oh say a decade ago, that was a roguelike too with pictures of some finn in a forest?

The very first version of UnReal World was released in 1992. The game was a lot different back then, but still featured many ideas and style of computer role-playing we're working on now. The game was then completely re-written and UnReal World version 2.00b saw the daylight in 1994

Maybe it's the same game?

Has anyone been playing this? I've tried it off and on over the years with outdated pirated versions, but never actually played it much because it was very daunting and it was before the days of wikis. It's nice to see that there's an in-game tutorial that goes over the basics which makes it a lot easier to at least get a start. It seems similar to Dwarf Fortress in a lot of ways, including having an unnecessarily convoluted UI. The tank-like controls take some getting used to as well.

Seems like it would be a very cool game for a Let's Play by an experienced player.

Haven't really started yet. I was pleased to learn there's cannibalism in the game, but no rape unfortunately. My dreams are shattered. Maybe next time, maybe next time.

Chances are you'll have to restart the game a few times even before finishing the tutorial. You run out of food pretty fast and don't even bother trying to catch a motherfucking elk early on, it's good fun.

I bought the lifetime license a couple of years ago.
Didn't regret it, you have to support good games.

The problem with the game, being a pure realistic survival game, is there's no actual goal or "point" other than keep yourself from starving/freezing to death every winter. Once you've got to the point to get a nice house with tons of food stocked up, along with good personal equipment for fighting, you're more or less "game over".

Let's say you like to fight stuff for a challenge, unfortunately the game's most powerful "monster" are bears and most powerful "villains" are those robbers in red armor. If you like building/trading, sure you may want to challenge yourself by building some megaprojects like huge mansions or even whole villages/cities...but the control and procedure are both tedious. Besides, if you want to build stuff, you should play Dwarf Fortress instead.

Of course, that's my experience from the version which was around two years ago. I don't know if the game had implemented new features since then. The beginning of the game is nonetheless very fun (or Fun in DF words), but once you got past the survival part, the game would become pretty boring since it lacks pretty much everything else (correct me if I'm wrong).

And as is usually the case with this kind of games, by the time you're more or less "game over", you have already played and enjoyed it for far longer than any game with an actual goal or "point". Go figure.

Missed it. Goddamn, this is one of those games I do want to give a try to see wether or not they are really appealing to me.
