Has the game evolved much in the past 5 years or so?

Well, the Njerpez have bows and arrows now. After three times trying the slave escape start and getting pincusioned I have sworn off further Unreal World for the day.

Good for them. Used to be you could cruise by in a raft and skeet shoot the stupid fuckers on the shore. At least that's not going to work any more.

Major changes for any who played old version of URW:

- Animals now have behaviours. You mess with a wolf pack and you will get swarmed. Predator will try to hunt prey. Herbivores will browse plants. Hungry animals will jump over the fence to mess with your cellar full of foods. (Squeee if you please)

- Item cache now is much bigger, so that the buffer overflow lead to item disappearing wont happen as before UNLESS you are a major powergamer. You can plant 1000 tiles of agriculture with no problem (the limit seem to be 1600 2000 tiles in 315p2 316b2)

- You want to fence your farming fields and your house like a motherfucker. I mean, a real jew. Animals will eat your plants. They will jump over the fence to get at your cellars full of food. God help you if they do that while you sleeping there.

- Njerpez is now raiders, not colonizers, ie they send raiders all over the lands, but their camps are mostly in the east. Bummer!

- Animals tracks will get erase after a month unseen.

- Save game and map maintainance. No longer 500MB save folder.

- Move Item Menu overhaul. It's now easier to move your enormous pile of loots.

- Automatic sorting based on quality. Ie you make piles of 200 smoked meatcuts, over time they will self-sorted into different groups with different qualities (bland, tasty, delicious...).

- Different level of quality lead to different effiency: a masterwork wooden shovel will dig your hole faster than a terrible one. Masterwork arrow will shoot straighter than rough handmade arrows.

- Nerfing of several trade goods: bowls, javelins, torches... It's also pretty exciting to shop, as they sells goods of various quality. And the various overpowered shopping techniques are nerfed: no longer normal cloak as material for cord.

- You now can harvest plants for food, seasonings, and herbal medicine to help healing/cooking/younameit.

Anyway, try it! It's free~

Shift Q? Remember to save or it will delete your character.
Thanks it worked : )...
Also a general question. I started in autumn for extra challenge, it is sept 1 in my game. My plan on surviving the winter is trading wooden bowls for flour and meat at a nearby village. I am wondering which are the best axe and knife for it, and generally is this even doable, so far i am doing ok but not sure does maybe village run out of food at winter or something like that

Bumping this up. Unreal World went donation based along the lines of Dwarf Fortress. Game's free and they're going to run off of donations.

History of Unreal World thus far. http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw_devhist.html

Downloads! http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw_downloads.html

People who missed the free one day thing but who were interested, Laclongquan Trash Phelot Clockwork Knight

Edit: Hmm. Looked at the donation FAQ a bit more closely. Probably not going to be donation based forever. Buggery.

Edit the second: Good heavens, now I'm in GRPG and seem to have devoured a Tripjack thread. Sorry bro.

If you are starting in Autumn you wont have time to play straight due to lacks of tools. Larp a vagabond and go steal some crop.

Choose a field at least 3 field away from village: V12F
Sleep there until midnight so that no one will see you. Sneak then harvest the crop (need knife). Gather the crop then move it to your permanent settlement. Do it all before Early Morning, ie before there's light for people to see what you are stealing. Thresh your crop at your location to get what seeds and leaves you can from the crop, for next year's seeds, cookery seasonings, and possibly herbal meds for Physician.

Be aware that if villagers see you take their crops there will be consequences. Up to and including a village or two be hostile to you with no way to alleviate.

Some players like to survive on stolen crops, but I only use that as a method to get big amount of seeds. Sure, I will use the crop, but hunting is generally enough to live on.

I think there's some kinda new system or just major nerfs for hunting and trapping. I remember I used to drop in on a pack of reindeer and bow kill like 5 of them in one go - now I can't hit any animals with a hunting bow and regular arrows with 80% skill, much less get bleeding shots to kill them. Traps also seem to work much less often. I dunno if he rebalanced it to extend out that "endgame point" where all your issues are solved by making it so you need masterwork everything to get parity with how regular stuff used to function.

Hmm yess the nerpers are more dangerous now that they shoot arrows. I was able to run away as a slave, but I don't think I can go back and kill anyone without being pin-cushioned immediately. Looks like hunting is really tough now, haven't managed to down any big game yet. I think using rituals is almost necessary now to get anything done.

Not sure what to make of all the plants n stuff...

Bros, playing this game again reminds of 2 things:

a) How fun it is just to try and survive, even if you solve this after just a few hours of struggle
b) How many bad design decisions are packed into this game. I mean, to cut a tree you use timbercraft skill, then chose from a menu. To pull twigs off of a tree, you use a different skill and pull stuff from a menu. To make a temporary shelter, you use the m-menu. TO carve up a carcass for meat, you use the e-menu. It's all crazy arbitrary and shit. The crafting system and all that is fine, it's just all the key commands, menus and sub-menus that are insane.

Seriously, I wish someone would steal all of the good ideas from this game and make a superior survival game with a better interface, more item and creature variety, and just more stuff in general. It's a fun game, and I even like the look of the game (well, not the larpy photos, but who gives a fuck about that stuff, and anyway the dev is an amateur primitive woodcrafts and hunting enthusiast, and he could probably kill an elk with a javelin in RL if he had to, so he's a bro). I just wish there was more to it and the menus and commands weren't quite so fuxxored.

I suppose currently there's Don't Starve on the horizon, but it sort of looks like lightweight URW to me.

Yeah, saves are compatible.

He "fixed" a bug (which was: if you hit escape while selecting an optional item in a recipe to skip the option, often if you held the key down for a millisecond too long the ESC command would repeat and abort the recipe) by introducing like a half second of lag before keyboard commands start autorepeating and it is driving me nuts in the 99% of cases where you want commands to autorepeat nigh-instantly

Roguelikes with bad church organ keyboard interfaces depend a lot on muscle memory don't fuck with my buttonfeel man

Good. Launched it again, and a bunch of foreign traders stumbled into my njerpez-meatmaking facility, attacking me without warning. Oh well, meat is meat. Loot is loot, too.

Yep, know that bug. Puzzled me for a while until it occured to me just to click on Esc button instead.

I dunno, how about we lock all those guys in Guantanamo until they learn to make proper fucking interfaces.

At least the newer versions no longer require you to manually take off your pants first if you want to change your underwear. A couple decades more, and it may occur to him there is no need for different commands to equip weapons and armor. Or maybe even - no kidding, hey - one and the same command could be used both to equip and unequip an item (eureka!!!).

I miss woodcarving though. Personalizing all those useless clubs to increase their cost used to be kinda fun. Instead, we've got agriculture and house-building, which are as entertaining as watching plants grow, literally.

After enduring Dwarf Fortress', Unreal World's interface is not that much of a big deal for me.

Why was that feature removed?

Yet for a survival-centered game, their presence makes sense.

What this project would really benefit from in future development to increase the interest span of a single game, now that the survival part is doing nicely, are more complex interactions with NPCs, including the possibility of leading nomads and starting new villages, more accurate village dynamics, and perhaps properly done invasions and conquests of Njerpez hordes against villages, which may offer the PC great boons for t he difficult feat of freeing them from the tributes. And maybe a reputation system that tracks down cannibalism witnessed by others too.

I wonder one thing:

Are Njerpez the equivalents Turks and Mongols or proto-Hungarians?

"all those guys" naturally include that one, too

Beats me. The skill got axed and replaced with Carpentry, but there are no carving options under carpentry actions.

True, but nonetheless, "do something then wait for half a year" does not a fun game maketh. I find house construction an extremely boring and repetetive endeavor as well. I just clear out the njeprez camp I spawn at and keep it as my base of operations, ever since I played the game the first time over 10 years ago.

That's a given, duh. But so far, we are only given an ever increasing number of flavors in watching the plants grow.

Pfft. You must be one of those "baww nerf the blobs" guys in CK2 thread

Cannibalism is awesome and makes the better half of the game. It's a fucking product identity. "UnReal World. The game where you cut your slain enemies for meat, then cook them in 20 different flavors".

Are Njerpez the equivalents Turks and Mongols or proto-Hungarians?

Given the geography, they are ought to be ruskie.
