I'm going to give this a spin when the new dlc drops(which is...2 days from now).

Haven't played this for quite a while, how much has the balancing and gameplay changed?

Two things I remember is that activating level scaling ruined the game(deactivating it made it more tolerable) and that the game played better and faster with a small party(8-10). Is this still the case?

Also, is this the "last" dlc? I imagine they must be close to the end of the dev cycle on this.

They've been milking Northgard for multiple years so i doubt it's the last one.

Isn't northgard a sandbox RTS?

This is a different beast. I have no idea but I wager that they get less and less interest with each passing dlc

If that's the case it's their own fault. This could have been a successful milking operation.

But their dlcs are very low effort and range from mid to terrible. Guess they wanted some quick buck to capitalize on success of this game, but this doesn't mean you can just release any shit and leave it buggy for months. And they are out of touch as to where to go with these dlcs, because tavern management and even more repetitive arena battles in addition to 100 other arena battles you already had in original with shit rewards priced like half of the game don't seem like 300 iq move.

The Skelmar Invasion

Roam a war-torn land

With this DLC, Wartales returns to its roots with an entirely new region to explore.

Ormance is under the control of the Skelmars, violent invaders from the Marches of the World. The new region is divided into sub-regions, called baronies, that have fallen into the hands of the Skelmars. Faced with such brutality, the Legion alone is no longer strong enough to hold back the barbarians… So who you gonna call? Mercenaries!

As you reclaim territory from the Skelmars, you’ll have the chance to repair buildings which have been destroyed by the invaders. This will allow you to gather resources to boost the war effort, request support from local factions with unique combat skills, and take back each stronghold one by one until Ormance is finally liberated!

To free the baronies, you’ll need to wrest these strongholds back from the Skelmars’ grasp. And since we’re all about being kind and gentle in Wartales, what better way to siege a fort than to ask nicely with battering rams and catapult fire?

Sieges introduce the first-ever version of multi-stage epic battles in Wartales. Begin at the fort’s outer defenses, take down archer towers and breach the gate to infiltrate the inner courtyard. Once inside, the fort’s defenders will try to stop your advance as you push toward assassinating the enemy leader and raising your banner. Hold your position for several rounds, reclaim the stronghold, and liberate the barony from the Skelmars’ control!

You won’t be alone in this assault; Ormance’s forces will support you with new command skills you can use during battles in the region. On top of that, you’ll be managing the war effort your way by rebuilding destroyed structures, unlocking unique bonuses and resources to aid in your reconquest.

Free update

New Class

The highly anticipated Crossbow class has been added, along with new crossbow units added to factions already present in the game. You can read the overview in this article.

Level cap increase

You can now level up each character in your party to level 15. This brings several changes:
  • The experience points required to level up have been recalculated and reduced starting from level 8.
  • Character stats have been slightly lowered at level 13, so proceed with caution, as this could impact your party’s overall carrying capacity.

At level 15, you’ll unlock a new specialization for each class in the game, with abilities at levels 3, 5, and 8. These specializations revolve around the concepts of Initiative and Patience, featuring additional effects that trigger depending on whether the target has already acted or not. Experiment with new builds for your party!

New Customization Options

Inspired by the Viking-like Skelmars, you’ll gain access to:
  • New facial tattoos
  • New hairstyles
  • New beard styles

Its a decent/good game but its missing a overarching story. Once you realise you are just wandering around doing rando quests from region to region it gets stale pretty fast. I thought ruin exploration would add some story, lore or whatnot but it was kinda lame in the end.

Also expansions were meh so far.

Battle Brothers lack overarching story and it isn't one of its problems (there are a few). Not every game needs a "pre-made" story.

It's not bad and a good time waster if you like this type of games. But don't expect BB though. They are not that similar. It's also semi woke (rampant warrior women shite, weird afterthought merc couple system and negroes appearing as rare tavern mercenaries mostly)

I don't recommend supporting woke devs placating for represenation of women in a profession where they are non existant. Fantasy or not. But you can always pirate it.

Not much alternatives to be honest. Iron Oath (also women warriors galore) and boring pixel shit. Urtuk, cool art style but much more repetitive and tiresome than either BB or Wartales. Dead Monarchy, i have it but not played it yet, looks very rough around the edges. There is some upcoming weeb game in the making also, forgot the name.

BB has lore bits n pieces if you actively look for it. The world state, noble houses, etc.

BB fans seem to hate this game, not sure why it seems pretty decent

It is alright. Very grindy though(though you can say the very same about BB), and they have been hit and miss with the additions.

I mean for a game with so little enemy and item variety, why the hell have they added stuff like a tavern keeper simulator and medieval american football minigame?

The pirate ship stuff was nice and it seems this dlc adds a war campaign/strategy element which is also nice. I liked the elements in building your camp, crafting stuff and having professions(even though the associated minigames are abominable).

Lore in wartales is nothing as interesting as BB, but certainly more expansive. I mean there is no rng or randomness in the maps, campaigns and npcs unlike BB. Everything is handplaced.

It is weird how attributes in this game are so badly designed. Most builds have most stats as literal dump stats.

There is no point raising willpower beyond 15-16 for instance, secondary stats have no worth(for instance there is 0 benefit in raising dexterity on a strenght class) and spending level up points on critical hit % is arguably better than raising the primary attribute, being that the weapon themselves raise it.

That said the game is fun. I'm having fun replaying it starting from Tiltren on region locked. No idea if I will get bored long before I even get to the latest dlcs. The game is very grindy and long.
