Aw man, seeing this last part pf the LP actually made me happy that I didn't follow the 3dog questline and just found the old man by accident.

Nah dude it isn't like that. That raider is really a good raider and was an outcast in her raider homeland for being a good raider. Maybe you haven't read the series of novels associated with her, but it's all very rebellious and bold.

Raider with a bat attacking the guy with an assault rifle...
Everyone in this world just begs you to kill them, Driackin, because they can't live like that anymore.

I think it's a good time to remind everyone that Fallout 3 won the "Best writing" award on GDC.

It's a good indicator of the industry's state.

I did that dish quest but stumbled on that auto repair shop by accident too.

Methinks it's a good thing they didn't artificially lock off Daddy-Vault. The only big problem is that if you stumble upon it by accident, the game still pretends as if you followed the entire DC-route, not changing any dialogue lines or adding extra explanations for the confused player.

I have been reading both this and the Mass Effect LP and while I haven't played any of the games, I got the impresion Fuckout 3 makes Ass Effect look good by comparison.

Mass Effect has better dialogue. Other than that, they are about the same.

I never finished ME, as it bored me out before I could. I did finish Fallout 3.

While I'd say ME is definitely better written, and a bit tighter in design, it is significantly more boring than Fallout 3. At least Fallout 3 kind of promises fun times, even if it never delivers all that well. ME doesn't even do that.

Yeah. Also, Fallout 3 has better gameplay than Mass Effect. Seriously, I'd rather do some inane quests, explore silly places (with some really athmospheric locations occasionally) and collect loot than to sit through one cutscene after the other.

Part 11 – Titanic

This, imo, was one of the most boring sections of the game. But, nonetheless, let’s play it and get it over with.
At the end of the previous episode, Three Dog told us that our daddy was in Rivet City.

While we’re travelling to Rivet City, we find a bunch of ruined cars:
415.jpg

In the city, there are a lot of ruined cars, like this one.

i3.jpg
Back in the war 200 years ago, lots of nukes were dropped and all the cars exploded.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Explosions are cool!!

416.jpg

We decide to fire off a few rounds at the destroyed vehicle.

417.jpg

Despite the fact that this car already exploded centuries ago, it goes up in flames after just 5 rounds from our assault rifle.

i3.jpg
How exactly does this make sense? I mean, the car already exploded 200 years ago.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Who cares? Explosions are fun!!

i3.jpg
But, why is this thing on fire? What’s burning? Shouldn’t all the fuel have burnt out decades ago?

418.jpg

A few seconds later, the car’s nuclear engine (which already exploded 200 years ago) explodes again.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
EXPLOSION!! :D

i3.jpg
...

Anyway, we keep travelling and finally reach Rivet City:
419.jpg

This is an old beached aircraft carrier that got turned into a city.

420.jpg

We use this bridge to enter Rivet City.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Yay!! Another city!!

i3.jpg
Unfortunately, there’s no side quest to kill all the folks who live in Rivet City (like there were in the previous two towns).

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
:(

421.jpg

Here’s Rivet City’s market district. There’s a bunch of merchants here.

422.jpg

Meet Flak. He sells ammunition and firearms.

423.jpg

And this chick is a drug dealer.

424.jpg

Meet Angela. She owns a restaurant. Apparently, there’s also some stupid side quest involving her and some dude she has a crush on.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
WTF is this? When the hell did Fallout 3 turn into a soap opera?

i3.jpg
I agree. This shit is boring. Let’s ignore her.

i3.jpg
Unfortunately, most of the other NPCs around here are just as dull and boring...

425.jpg

This is Paulie. He’s a druggie. If you give him some drugs, you’ll lose some karma.

426.jpg

427.jpg

Meet Mr. Lopez. He’s really emo and suicidal.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
These people suck.

i3.jpg
I agree. Let’s just find Dr. Li. Apparently, Daddy Neeson came to Rivet City to find her.

Dr. Li is a doctor. Therefore, we head over to the Science Lab to find her.
428.jpg

This is the town’s Laboratory.

429.jpg

In the science lab, we find another <s>moronic</s> awesome bobblehead!

430.jpg

i3.jpg
:sigh:

Anyway, we find one of the scientists and ask her if she’s seen our dad.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Hey, you didn't happen to have seen any middle-aged men around here, did you?

431.jpg

FACT: Anna is a bitch.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Doctor Li is the head scientist around here, right? Maybe we’ll finally get to meet an intelligent person...

432.jpg

i3.jpg
Everyone else we’ve met is fucking inane. I agree. Being better than all these people isn’t saying much.

So, does Dr. Li live up to her amazing reputation? Let’s find out:
433.jpg

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
You talking about daddy?

434.jpg

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
You knew mommy?

DoctorLiSmall.jpg
Your mother was, well she was a good woman; a very dedicated scientist. Your father loved her very much.

435.jpg

DoctorLiSmall.jpg
She died from complications at childbirth. None of us were expecting it; we weren’t as prepared as we could have been.

436.jpg

437.jpg

i3.jpg
What the hell kind of a dialogue option is that? I mean, who the hell would actually say that in real life?

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Whatever. Mommy probably would’ve been a stupid bitch anyway.

i3.jpg
Dude, you’re fucked up. You know that?

438.jpg

FACT: Regardless of which dialogue option we picked above, she gives us just about the same response.

439.jpg

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
So, what were you guys working on before mommy died?

DoctorLiSmall.jpg
It was called Project Purity.

440.jpg

441.jpg

DoctorLiSmall.jpg
We stopped working on it after your mother died and your father left.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
So... my birth single-handedly destroyed Project Purity and likely caused thousands of people to suffer by continuing to drink irradiated water?

i3.jpg
So, where’s Daddy Neeson right now? Can we talk to him?

442.jpg

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Ugh... this is gonna mean doing yet another contrived mission to find him, right?

DoctorLiSmall.jpg
Your father was here not long ago. He insisted that we return to work on Project Purity. I tried telling him too much time has passed; there’s no way it would work.

443.jpg

i3.jpg
Why do I get the feeling that once we head over to his old lab, he probably won’t be there either?

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Anyway, where’s your old lab?

444.jpg

445.jpg

Obviously, Fallout 3 doesn’t give us any option but to follow our dad’s footsteps and continue looking for him.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Whatever. Let’s just head over to their old lab. This place is boring.

446.jpg

This is the old Jefferson Memorial Building. It’s fairly close to Rivet City.

447.jpg

Inside, we find some old lab equipment. Presumably, daddy was performing some research here recently.

448.jpg

The place is also infested with Super Mutants.

i3.jpg
Wasn’t Daddy Neeson here just recently? What did he do about all the super mutants? How the fuck was he able to do research with all these Super Mutants running around?

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
I don’t know? Maybe, they killed him?

We search the building some more, until we find:
449.jpg

Conveniently, Daddy Neeson left a bunch of tapes that document work he’s done since coming here.

i3.jpg
Apparently, the Super Mutants ignored him for long enough to make these tapes...

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Let’s just listen to the tapes.

The tapes are entirely audio, so I don’t have any screenshots. Here’s the general gist of the audio on the tapes:

LiamNeesonSmall.jpg
One night, after I broke into the Overseer’s office, I hacked his console and gained access to his restricted files. There was one name that stood out, Dr. Stanislaus Braun. He was Vault-Tec’s leading scientist.

LiamNeesonSmall.jpg
It was there that I learned of his involvement in Vault-Tec’s Societal Preservation Program and his work on something there called GECK, the Garden of Eden Creation Kit.

LiamNeesonSmall.jpg
It was nothing short of a miracle: it was a terra-forming module, capable of creating life from complete lifelessness.

LiamNeesonSmall.jpg
According to the files, the GECK was actually distributed to several of the vaults to be used after the war. V101 was sadly not one of these vaults.

LiamNeesonSmall.jpg
Dr. Braun lived in Vault 112 during the war. He could have easily completed his research while he was there. I’m off to V112 to search for any of Braun’s research.

End of tapes.

MainCharacterSmall.jpg
Dude, this search for Daddy is getting really tedious.

i3.jpg
I agree.

Nonetheless, we head to Vault 112 next update!!!

End of Part 11

I apologize for the lower quality of this update, but this section of the game was really boring. I’m glad it’s over.

I guess I'll go completely against the grain here and say I enjoyed, and still enjoy, this game. The OP has managed to draw out every single stupid aspect of it very well, and indeed, it is very stupid on occasion, but in terms of athmosphere and giving you a feeling of having to survive in a tough environment, it really does succeed. Crank the difficulty level up to hard, keep your repair skill low so that you will have to pay a considerable amount of money for fixing your gear and you're in for a challenge. At least that's how I've experienced it so far. I'm currently at level 11 and still enjoying the experience. Just wandering through the wasteland discovering new locations is fun, and I think Bethesda has done a wonderful job at creating variety in terms of encounters, locations and scenery. And also, getting rid of level scaling was the single best choice they made. FO3 is actually sometimes like Morrowind, where you can really find yourself knee deep in shit if you go to the wrong place before you're strong enough. I still remember my first encounter with a deathclaw at level 7. Good times.

And regarding the silliness, it's really nothing I can't cope with. Some games aren't meant to be analysed at a deep level. I'm actually kind of astounded that some people here will bitch and moan about every little inconsistancy instead of just enjoying the many good parts of this game.

killing a supermutant with a hunting rifle while still being on level 5. truly a struggle for survival.

that was on "very hard", by the way.

I've never, ever been able to do that. I can take on maybe 2 mutants at a time on Hard, at level 11, with considerably better weapons. On level 5 I died. I guess you got more F3 skillz than I do, or maybe you're just exaggerating in order to join in on the bashing.

Super Mutants aren't that hard. Deathclaws on the other hand could kill me easily at low level. First encounter with a Yuan-Ti was horrible.

I also admit to having enjoyed and still occasionally enjoying the game, but some quests are seriously facepalm-inducing. Recently I found some city where there are one supervillain and one superhero fighting each other. LOLWAT. It's so extremely unfitting in a postapoc setting, it must've been written by a 12-year-old.

Yup. It's utterly stupid and unfitting, and most of the other quests are too. But they can be taken with a grain of salt and enjoyed anyway, at least from where I stand. Setting and consistency will always take a backseat to actual fun, which is why I just can't bother getting riled up anymore about FO2/3 anymore, even if they (especially 3) are pretty dumb.
