first diablo. perfect balance of being properly dark but not trying to be too dark and edgy.
many make mistake thinking there is no such thing as being too dark. well, there is.

To my understanding grimdark is a term that connects the words grim and darkness together without the need to write grim darkness. It's a type of shortcut.

So, you're asking which cRPG has the biggest amount of grim and darkness. I do not know that, because I'm not that interested in playing such games, but I do know that people can interpret the term differently and this can led to an interesting discussion.

Warhammer is not that grimdark IMO, yes, lot of people dying but there are still heroes doing heroic stuff.

I'd say Planescape: Torment.
Still need to play King Arthur: Knight's Tale further!
The word Grimdark is an abbriviation of the original 40k tagline: 'In the Grim Darkness of the 41st Millennium there is only War."

Grimdark literally refers to stuff which is similar in tone to 40k.

Right but also wrong. Grim Dark is mostly used in regards to 40k but the term it's self is bigger than 40k. It's a way to describe really bleak fantasy settings where there's little hope for the future. Something like Mad Max would also be considered Grim dark despite it's tone being some what comedic. It's a setting where there's no hope and every day is a deep hard grind just to keep your head above water. Which ironically doesn't describe 40k in the slightest. There are hundreds of ways for 40k to have a happy ending and most people in the setting never once interact with the dark or grim shit. Most live happy lives following a religion that mostly works for them. Some could argue many worlds in 40k are better than our own at this point.

Why wasn’t this Baldur’s Gate 3’s theme song?

Way back you could possibly say Ultima 3 (but maybe that was just my irl setting heaped on and an unlucky first playthrough getting slaughtered a lot as a newb to RPGs), as those dungeons were just depressing. Wasn’t Vagrus supposed to be a bit Grimdark in the lore department?

Diablo 1 & Darkest Dungeon seem pretty grim on the list.

The Imperium will eventually fall into Chaos or be eaten by the Tyranids. It is teetering on the brink of destruction and will eventually die (as the Old World already has).

Unless the Emperor is allowed to die and is reborn as the Star child and nukes all the bad stuff. Or they invent even better space marines and wipe the universe clean of enemies or GW go bankrupt and we're finally rid of the fanboys shitting up every tabletop discussion!

Yeah yeah I know, but there are plenty of hopes in Warhammer.
I want to go darker.

No one mentioning Bleak Faith? Jank Souls like but it's one of the most grim dark things I've ever played. Absolutely drips with oppressive mood, everything is fucked and grim and you feel like a skeleton barely able to stand while you're in a city so infinitely big you can't even see the bottom from the middle. Takes inspiration from Blam! If you want to see the sort of scale and it's all grim dark.

Would recommend on a sale. They keep patching it but it was janky as fuck when I played it a year or so ago.
Do you know if they fixed the rolling? I remember shooting forwards/backwards about 20 feet when rolling, was probably what made me put it down. I have a high tolerance for jank, especially when the world looks so good, but Bleak Faith was completely unplayable.

Sorry for the triple post, but the Imperium has been falling for over 10.000 years now.
As long as Space Marines are selling, it ain't gonna fall.

that's the point. without any glimmer of hope there can be no true darkness.

Where's no hope?
boring pointless shit?
An office job....
i remember side stories in another eden. genocide, cannibalism - lots of sick shit. and most depressing was story about corporate wage slave...

I have no idea. I finished it back in March but there's been 20 patches/fixes since then including a major one this month with a full movement overhaul. I'd give it a try and find out.
