Have to agree that the age of MMOs is over. MMOs were a zeigeist.

I'll give Raph Koster his game as a last hurrah as I've only ever really enjoyed his games. Everything else (Face of Mankind) is incredibly niche and unknown or shit. Maybe Amazon's Lord of the Rings game might be good too.

They need to be better in some way than WOW

Most MMOs are just WoW with less polish and a smaller player base so why bother playing anything other than WOW.

In some cases, the smaller playerbase and less polish are the entire appeal.
