Every time I open up that damnable steam sale page, I'm reminded of the games I have waiting in the wings - almost perpetually it seems. I've got enough "I should probably play that instead of buying some new piece of shit" titles sitting there that I reckon I don't actually need to buy a new game for the next 10 years unless its stupendously good or transcendent. What does your "backlog" look like?

Games I am currently committed to a playthrough of:
NLC7 mod for stalker soc
Prey (2017)

Games I have installed and on the backburner:
Doom eternal
Hitman 3
Return of the obra dinn
Intravenous 2

Games I need to finish a playthrough of:
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Thief 1
Thief 2
Sekiro
ATOM rpg
BG3
Deadfire
Elden Ring
Gothic 2
Sleeping Dogs (eh)
Witcher 3's dlcs (maybe, probably never)
Metro Exodus (probably never)
Amnesia the dark descent

Games I am interested in playing eventually:
Northern Journey
Bone totem stasis
Ace combat 7
SOMA

Getting ready to do a Thief 1 and 2 playthrough.
You should too.
I never played SOMA (I think I own it on GOG).
Is it any good?

I used to be like "man my backlog is getting huge, how I'm I going to play all these games?" it became stressful until I said fuck it I won't play any of them unless I feel the mood. Felt a lot better.

I've managed to be pretty good about avoiding a deep backlog. I literally got these yesterday:
Planescape: Torment (my current run through, I played for an hour last night)
Morrowind
SKALD: Against the Black Priory
Oblivion (I wasn't planning to get this one but it was an additional, like, $3 since I was getting Morrowind)

Games still on my backlog that I haven't started (I'll probably slot these in with the above):
Heroine's Quest
Quest for Infamy

Games I own that I've started, haven't beaten, and might come back to eventually:
Pathfinder: Kingmaker (I found the writing to be too banal after 10 hours...)
Darkwood (I enjoyed it -- recommended for fans of horror and survival crafting -- but survival crafting games really aren't my usual genre and I picked it up on a bit of a whim. I got about halfway through then got busy with life and just didn't pick it back up).

In late 2020, in order to solve the backlog problem, I made an oath with myself. I am going to start playing my Steam games in alphabetical order until I either finish them or decide I'm done with them and never going to finish them.

Finished 10 Second Ninja X (the first game on the list) in November 2020. All good.

Finished Aegis Defender (the second game on the list) in December 2020. All good.

Started playin Age of Conan (third game on the list) afterwards. 4 years and 400 hours of playtime later, I'm like 70% through the game. (It's an MMO).

It's safe to say I'm not going to finish my backlog in this lifetime.

I play and finish other games in the middle of all this too, so it's not pure autism. But the alphabetical order thing still determines my main commitment.

It's fairly large and spread across several console platforms (I am a console-only gamer), which is why I won't be buying any new consoles or games after this gen.

You guys should make backlog voting threads like I do, let the codex hive mind decide your fate. If you dare.

Just start multiple games and randomly jump between them then install another one and finish it on the same day then fail to play anything for an entire week then reinstall that classic you've played 5000 times and repeat.

I let the games stew for years until they become good games. For example, I just finished Watch Dogs. And some sections were somewhat fun actually!

The day I finally play The Last of Us 2 it will already be the Citizen Kane of videogames! Or Citizen Kane 2, I guess, since the first part was Bioshock.

Try it. Play Thi4f in 2025. You will come back saying it's a solid 85/100.

I'm just replaying old classics these days. There seem to be less interesting games coming out these days, so my backlog's been clear for quite a while. KCD2 will change that, come February ♥️

Most games I own. I'm horrible at finishing games, even ones I really like and will wholeheartedly recommend.

I agree with the guy above who said that your backlog is really a library. It's a healthy mindset to have, the moment a game becomes something to tick off on a list is when you stop enjoying games. There are already more games than any human could play in one lifetime, there's no need to rush.

Dozens of games on my ThinkPad that I've picked up, played for an hour or two, then played another game for an hour or two, then played another game for an hour or two, then played another game for an hour or two... I have not finished a game in months. Even if I enjoy the game a lot I'll still drop it after a few days max to start another game.

My backlog is just a simple but ever-changing txt with games that looked interesting to me and I want to check out. But I don't buy a game until I actually want to play it (or it's on sale and I'm sure I'm going to play it soon). I hate it when games just sit in my library even if they were cheap.

Here is my current list.
Nine Sols (<- probably next)
Balatro
Drova Foreskin
UFO 50
The Case of the Golden Idol
Void Stranger
Selaco
Super Mario 3D World
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Thief: The Black Parade
Metroid: Rogue Dawn
Yoku's Island Express
Pathologic
Outer Wilds - Echoes of the Eye
Marble It Up! Ultra
Arcanum (<- the oldest entry, has been on the list since 2016 )
Portal: Reloaded
SKALD: Against the Black Priory
Intravenous
Baldur's Gate 3
TEVI
Returnal
Ghost Trick
Zortch
X-Piratez
Captain Blood
Sekiro
Final Fantasy IX
Demon's Souls
Earthbound
Darkest Dungeon
Ultima Underworld
Dragon Age: Origins
Myst
Alpha Protocol
Psychonauts
