Pete Hines has made a post in the Elder Scrolls forum about the delay of Oblivion. Here's a clip:

In short, the game is coming out in early 2006 because it isn't done yet. We still have things that need to be done before the game is released. So we continue to optimize, test, balance, etc. We've already gone way beyond what we did in any game previously in playtesting and balancing this game. Way beyond. But there is work that needs to be done and so development continues to go on pretty much around the clock. We will not put out a more specific date until we are certain we will be ready then. Like system specs, we aren't fans of putting out info that changes later on and only confuses or annoys our fans.

Well, the first part should be fairly obvious to anyone. They're not just delaying the game for shits and giggles.

I bet Pete is the kind of guy that would call the fire department after the house has burnt down. It took him a full five days to tell everyone what they already new. What a schmuck.

I have no issue with a delay, just the way this asshole handles Public Relations.

that'd be great if they were, though. i would totally respect a developer delaying a release just to mess with their fanbase's heads. it may not be good business, but it would be damn funny

So what exactly needs to be done for Oblivion? Not good enough for the X-Box or what? Plus when will we hear news about Fallout, my morbid curiosity hasn't had its fill lately. :(

Considering how we've seen Beth handle pr and marketing lately, I shouldn't expect anything on either of those topics. Spin is the only thing they seem to do.

According to leaked information, during the extended development time they are implementing Cumulus AI, which allows real time generation of realistic cloud formations! Imagine that. And you will be completing the main quest with Fargoth as your sidekick, voiced by Richard Dean Anderson.

Get a job and learn about the world. Bethesda is owned by a company that trades publicly. If Bethesda were a privately owned company, they could make statements all they want. Pete is the last one who is allowed to speak publicly.

Sure, I agree that as a representative for the company you can't always comment as you'd like - but Pete's failed at:

a) holding back the slavering horde with a few calm words -"Information will come shortly, please be patient" - would suffice, and show that you're not just ignoring your fans, even if you can't comment on the actual matter.

b) when actually posting about it, doing so in a offhand manner where you don't seem to take the whole thingh serious and thus risk enraging your fans yet again.

Clap clap.

Thought this was pretty funny. And visit my sig too.

And this was made to have nothing to do with Oblivion but I find it strangely relevant to Oblivion's gameplay design.

Thanks for your advice. That's what I will do when I turn 16!

Who gives a shit about who owns Bethesda and in what manner? Sure, they can't post any crap they want, but the moment that TakeTwo broke the news, it was already out and sitting quietly was no longer a smart option. They should have had a confirmation full of hype, excitement, and positive message to the shareholders by the end of the day.

Haha! Awesome!

Something tells me this might be slightly less obtrusive than the "radiant" GPS compass system.

Wow. He said absolutely nothing. Of course it's not done. But what isn't done about it? Is it not done because it failed the Xbox QA test in frames per second and now they are "finishing" it by trying to figure out what to pull out? Is the AI still fucking up?

Remember, they were doing "clutterpasses" late in the summer so they were expecting to be finished up. I wonder what went wrong?

What went wrong was Take 2 decided to play corporate bullshit games and brow beat Bethesda into thinking it would be 'a cool new thing' to do....
