Would you pay for special features / no ads?

Would you help support the Codex by paying for "features"?

  • I'd support the option of paying a once-off $10 if it meant I didn't see any ads.

Hahahah!

Begging for money. You are worse than a bum.

Anyways, I'd rather admit that BIO sucks than pay money to leeches for a message board... even if it is a board that i have sex with every night in myd reams.

In other words, NO!

Take your selfishness in trying to brainwash me into giving you MY money to finance your hard on for internet porn, and eat some shit!

I don't think customs titles or avatars aren't that bad of an idea. The people who would be donating are bound to be some of the more frequent posters and contributors, i.e. might deserve such on their own merits. I know I'd love to put Scourge of Ohio, Philosopher King, or Hamburger Fan underneath the Greatatlantic. Custom Avatars, however, could be iffy. It would sort of change the "image" of the Codexs to have some guy with Sephiroth as his avatar. I know some posters would put a very ethically questionable pick if there was no approval process. Heck, the only thing I'd like for a new avatar is to stick a GA in there.

As for ads, it does seem like a fair bargain to give contributors a break from them, a lot of professional sites have similar arrangements. But personally, I don't mind the ads and their removal doesn't provide me any extra incentive to donate. None of them are the sort of thing that would interest me, like games or books, or something like that, but if they pay the bills they pay the bills.

So you just admitted that BIO sucks, all this time you were lying to impress your peers. How sad.

Make T-shirts that say simply "R00fles!", that way we can piss Volourn off and identify ourselves (should any of you actually leave your house) at the same time.

Well, I'm all for supporting the Codex rather than supporting some shitbag advertising company who in turn supports the Codex. Not that I've ever clicked a banner in all of my time here, anyway.

I've been clicking banners a lot today.

Btw, is it okay if i just click it and close the tab right away, or i need to wait a bit for the click to be regisstered or something? I hope not, cuz i don't want to waste my traffic on some EVE online registration forms...

I could care lesss which ad company i support, as long as codex is benefiting from it.

It's also been raised that those people who donate a certain amount could get custom avatars or titles.

I dunno, seems pretty easy to get custom titles for free. :P

Here's my question... is the fucking full-screen dancing teddy bear who now guards the entrance to our forum something you guys have a choice about, or are you really that hard up for ad revenue?

I don't mind banner ads, and at least this EVE Online crap is marginally related to the site. But "click to proceed" ads piss me off. If you're so hard up that you have to descend to those things, I'll pay you $10 out of pity.

I'd rather not have custom avatars and titles, though. I like the current Codex caste system. It amuses me.

Holy crap... I've seen my first interstitial now and I'd really pay $10 never to see such things again.

Meh. I'd rather keep my $10 and stop wasting so much of my time posting here...

Since this is not a professional site, I don't think charging money would be a good idea. Just put the ads and, if necessary, ask for donations, if you can't pay the bills at the end of the month.

Anyway, a one and only charge wouldn't change much in terms of $$$. Agter a few months, everything would be the same.

I don't mind a "Had Too Much $$$" message in the user info block, especially for people using different local currency symbols, but I'm against custom avatars. Given the current state of discussion, it'll just mean a plague of tubgirls and flashing-backgrounded anime schoolgirls.

On a related note (personalization bad), why does Volourn get to keep the Xfire sig when everyone else lost their graphical sigs?

We banned images in signatures? What kind of dumb...

... oh yeah, I remember that. Looks like the code to remove IMG tags in signatures is le b0rked. Might fix that.

Regarding ads, we'll be removing the interstitials until we can replace them with something which doesn't interfere with that ctrl-click thing in Firefox and Opera. That may even be pop-ups or pop-unders every 6 hours or so.

I'm still undecided on the "You pay, you get no ads" option. If we were to do it, it'd probably be a recurring annual fee of $10 because we make at least $5 out of you buggers just for showing some ads apparently.

Do you get more if we click a banner?

Depends on the ads. As a general rule of thumb, a click or two a day won't hurt anyone.

Recurring annual fee sucks, as does buying custom taglines/avatars.

10$ = no ad's of any kind for the forseable future.

Not that anyone cares, but the full page ad sucks. It either a) makes me want to stop coming at all (who cares) or b) install ad blockers (you care).

Why not do those context word ads that's so popular these days. I can deal with accidentally mousing over "computer" and getting some wal mart special.

I also can live with slower forums.

Edit: the full page ad sucks because flash sucks on my computer, at almost full screen my mouse goes jerky. If I wasn't so crufty and lazy I'd disable flash entirely.

You might also put in google ads around the site. One forum I visit actually has them on the right hand side of every post, it's visible without being horridly obtrusive.

Just a thought.

Oh yes, Google. As I mentioned in some previous posts, it pays per click. Gaming sites get crappy Google ads that pay in vicinity of 5 cents per click. At 1-5 clicks per day average around here, you do the math.

(Just in case I wasn't being obvious, we've tried Google ads before, with the above results.)

I third google ads. I might actually click some of them, and it's always fun to see what crazy shit they think you'll buy based on the rest of the site.
