I've only played one but I found it to be pretty decent so if you don't mind horror I'd recommend DiviDead. It's a fairly old game (1998) but I liked art style (ie. not dragon ballz shit). Like that review said, it isn't one I'd play again (people play hentai games more than once?) but it's worth checking out.

Play Saya No Uta.

It is about this guy who suffers an accident that leaves him either crazy or with some serious brain damage so that his perceptions are all screwed up and he sees the world all twisted and monstrous, his former friends and lovers as fleshy and tentacular abominations, the city as a ruin covered in fleshy pustules, etc. During his time at the hospital, though, while learning to control his reactions so no one will notice and so he will not end in a madhouse or the like, he meets a young girl, by the name of Saya, that he perceives normally. They become friends, then they start living together, and then they become lovers. Meanwhile, this guy is becoming more and more socially withrawn and solitary, and after a reaction they feel was extremely nasty his friends start poking their noses where they should not.

It is dismally dark and sick, inspired by things such as Lovecraft and the like, but at the same time it is awfully beautiful and charming and emotional. Though it only has two choices, the first one being whether you want the main character to try and go back having a normal life or accept he is far gone and the second one whether you want the main character and Saya to win or to lose, and three endings the story is beautifully twisted and sinister and sweet, and it is the kind of morally ambiguous stuff game developers should take as a reference when making up so called moral choices. The cannon ending (the main character stays with Saya and they get away with all they did long enough) is amazingly pretty, too, sweet and dramatic and really twisted.

There is a pretty good torrent going around, with lots of extras and the like.

Well there are a few that are decent. Mind you, it's still Japanese and so it will usualy feauture a few retarded traits, but if you can look past it you can have some fun. Most of the interesting ones are of the visual novel kind, because the 3D ones are rather boring.

Season of Sakura is pretty fun. Nothing very special here, just light-hearted everyday school life. Well the main character is good at everything he does and got a group of girls following him everywhere, so it's pure male fantasy but very low on sex, with quite a few comical situations (the kind you'd find in anime or manga, mind you). Many anime references, starting with the characters being inspired by characters from series like Evangelion or Magic Knight Rayearth.

Kana - Little Sister is surprisingly serious and very low on comedy and sex. A few parts in the plot feel a bit contrived but for the most part it's pretty good. I don't want to tell you much about this one and let you find out yourself if you check it out.

Family Project was a lot of fun. It's a bit too verbose, often over-the-top, and uses too many stupid plot devices, but quite a few of the subplots are good and unpredictable (one of them is even awesome with great character depth). Else it has a pretty lovable cast of silly characters, without unfortunately avoiding some annoying anime clichés though some grow past them over time. Veru enjoyable.

Princess Waltz got a rather stupid story, but I suspect it's why I liked it. Basically about a prince from another world who comes to earth, and there are princesses from that world who fight to decide who's gonna marry the prince, and for some reason the prince merges with your character to become a princess and enter the contest, and of course it's all explained why later. Very linear but has some cool, and long, battle descriptions and a somewhat ok card system for combats though it is easy to abuse. Not great but fun with some cool moments. Lots of stupid anime comedy and clichés though. Again somewhat low on sex, though it has more than the other games I listed above.

Critical Point is interesting if only because it got sci-fi. Your character is dispatched on a moon base to investigate some murders, and of course meets lots of females in need of sex. Stupid and lots of male fantasy but the interesting part is that the plot changes depending on some choices you make, important of trivial. That means that depending on which plotline you get, the murderer changes so it keeps things interesting. I actually wish I saw that sort of mechanic implemented in more serious games.

Bible Black is the game that gave birth to the infamous hentai serie. Lots of sex and black magic, lots of obvious plot devices and thin characters, but there are quite a lot of choices and a great deal of endings, and getting them all can be tricky. Enjoyable just as some silly pulp story can be enjoyable. Tons of depravity to be expected.

Divi-Dead is a bit old and it can be annoying to check all locations to get the plot to continue but it has a rather nice occult story (for Japanese) with some nice twists and good art. Gory parts too, like Destroid posted.

An old favourite is True Love, which is a dating sim with quite a lot of stats. Not really heavy on the story, or even good, but it's fun to mess around with all the stats and activities and see what you'll end up with.

I played a few over the years and that's all I can think of from the top of my head. Most are just too silly and depraved, and other try to be too serious and end up boring. These at least managed to be interesting for a reason or another. Next on my play/read list is Crescendo, of which I heard good things. I'll see if it deserves it or not.
