Why is there always a rush to remove features, simplify, and remove complexity(dumb down)? This goes in the face of the fact that things in life which aren't complex also sustain no lasting interest. Complexity becomes the most important feature of any gaming system with the key element the balance of those complex systems with one another. To do this, requires a lot of effort, but is always far more interesting than modern gaming systems which practically do everything for you.
Removing stats, to compensate for player error, is no different than a quest compass. It is the exact same hand-holding stupidity that causes all interest to wane with exponentially faster speed as time progresses. Modern games are almost akin to a tutorial that lasts the entire play session from beginning to end. How can anyone enjoy something that requires the least possible effort, understanding, or challenge? I've always thought that knowledge of something increases someone's propensity to enjoy it. Why then do modern games continue to remove and diminish? Can developers not see how this affects the intelligent gamer who cannot be bothered to waste their time with a simple system that offers no complexity of depth in which they can wrap their minds around?
Hell, even if this demographic of gamers is the smallest, I would argue that this alienation has lead to a direct loss of sales. There are few games that exist for these people, and they will only settle for such bad development choices before moving onto other complex systems of information in life.
So why remove features when they can be redesigned to be more complex and interesting while also being balanced with the other gaming systems? Because it's just easier for your average developer to do. Sad, but true.
