NUVIE, that Ultima VI replacement engine for a variety of operating systems, has updated with a nice list of changes. Here's some of them:

  • FM-Towns audio unpacker. We've added a new tool to extract the audio dialog from the FM-Towns Ultima 6 version. The tool takes an actors dialog file and outputs a set of WAV files.
  • Darkness. Nuvie now has alpha-blended darkness. You can see some screenshots attached to a post in our forum. (Here) We plan to support the original dithered tile darkness too but this might not be added for a while.

  • Temporary objects. Temp objects are removed from the map when the player walks far enough away.
  • Party formation has been improved. Party members should follow the avatar more closly.
  • Egg support. Temporary actors are now spawned as the player walks around. Only a few worktypes have been iplemented thus far so many monsters will sit motionless on the map. We'll fix this when we implement combat.
  • New build enviroments. You can now build the project with Apple's XCode or Microsoft's Visual C++ version 7.
  • Numerous bug fixes. Too many small fixes and enhancments to list here. See the ChangeLog file for a complete list of changes. :)
  • Added more monster types. Dragon and hydra actor types have been added. It is also now possible to dismount from horses.

My, that is some pretty darkness going on there.
