Fortunately Aracunm is fairly transparent in it’s inner workings, holding the mouse pointer over an enemy in combat gives you a percentage, much like it did in the original Fallout, it also tells you what penalties you are receiving, for instance if it is too dark in this particular dungeon, a light bulb will appear telling you to light a torch or otherwise illuminate the area is you want to dramatically improve your chances.

Most fights come down to clicking on the enemy and hoping for the best, maybe using one or two tried and trusted spells, experimentation just seems to get you killed quicker.
