The post-apoc indie RPG Aeon of Sands from Two Bits Kid is being released on December 4th according to a new trailer:

I don't think we've really covered the game before, at least not on the front page. It seems to be some sort of mix between Dungeon Master, with real-time clickity-click combat, puzzles, automapping action and CYOA sequences. For more info, check out its website.

Judging by the gallows-humor-grimdark writing and the combination of magic and post-apo, Dying Earth seems a more immediate influence.

    It certainly looks great.
Why does it have to be realtime, though? In all of these games, that always leads to mindless clicking orgies without any strategy to it other than the dancing around, the worse the more party members there are.

Looks fucking amazing, will definitely be buying this. My only minor gripe in the graphics/art department is the font. Something about the lower resolution and pixeling just makes the blocky letters really bothersome for me. Is this a technical limitation regarding the resolution of the game, or can the letters actually be smaller and more crisp?

    EDIT: https://www.aeonofsands.com/2016/06/28/fonts-the-quest-for-readability/ Nice.

EDIT 2: Wish the letters were a little bit smaller, but eh.

And it wouldn't just because it was turn-based.
The point is that in these games, real-time combat plays like shit, because its nature makes it impossible to bring any actual combat strategy to the table. You just click the "attack with current weapon" or "cast current spell" button (or hit the hotkey) repeatedly until someone dies. And maybe move back and forth to the rhythm of music. There just isn't any time for further thought than that. It's been the same in every single game of that type, ever, from the 90s to the latest Grimrock.

If at all, those always playing alike is the problem here. While turn-based blobbers always play differently as their gameplay depends on the character & spell system. Admittedly, in some of them you rarely do more than just auto-attack, but that is a design problem, not a systemic one.

The best real-time blobbers have always been those in which you control only one character, because that actually leaves some time for thinking what that character should do. It's pretty much the same as every other game in which you control just one character. But as soon as you have to decide a whole party's actions in a second, it devolves into attack-spam or pause-button-spam.
And somehow, this kind of game rarely comes with a pause function that lets you set everybody's next move.

City States in a post-apocalyptic desert, elemental magic and forbidden psionics? This is totally Eye of the Beholder: Dark Sun.

It is a shame the game is real-time. It looks interesting but better to stay away from a clusterfuck combat. Or perhaps the combat is just too simplistic/arcadey to suffer from real-time?
