Single sharded Rust with an actual community in the thousands with actual consequences is a pretty solid hook to be honest.

If the rest of the game were interesting.
But the same thing that has already been done a hundred times, just with more people isn't exactly exciting.

Back in 2016 when the game was announced, I saw the listing on Amazon for $0.00 and I ordered a handful split between multiple accounts just in case they'd honor it in the event of going buy2play or whatever. Looks like it paid off.

Imagine actually paying money for an early access MMO from a literally who studio in the current year.

Wouldn't call it literally who. Amazon Games poached a big part of other San Diego studios, most notably Sony Online Entertainment (now Daybreak Games) who made Planetside and Everquest. Especially notable is John Smedley who is basically the reason why Planetside 2 is a thing.

The state of current MMOs makes me upset. In vanilla WoW PKing led to some interesting stories, such as the Orc Angwe who became famous for PKing and forcing people to pay others for protection just to pass through the area and continue on with the story. There's even an entire website dedicated to his legacy.

Nowadays PKing is considered "toxic" or "predatory behaviour"... Why don't they just have non-PK worlds if it upsets people so much?

WoW was already a massive shift towards the carebear direction from earlier MMOs
Not like it matters, any MMO that tries to mix PvE and PvP ends up sucking at both because everything becomes identical(sawyerism due to PvP) and you might as well go play CSGO with dragons.

As much as I'll crap on modern themeparkshit MMOs, vanilla WoW is not as much of a problem as it's made out to be. It had attunement and no LFG/LFR beyond area based chatboxes... None of this is even remotely carebear.
WoW did gradually become more shitty through expansions and patches, but at launch the experience was fine.

    it's "tale of neocron" time.
neocron managed this with style: every character had a chip implanted into his brain to force him being pve. remove the chip and you could attack all those who removed their chip. people without the chip had raised stats, so they could wade through pve more easily, thus gathering resources for the crafting of the best items faster.
why gather and craft? to fight over territory and installations. on foot and on vehicles.

I forgot this was still a thing.

Removing PvP is a step in the right direction if they want the game to actually have a population higher that near cancelled Gacha games but then again it doesnt seem to be PvE, I am kinda fed up of people that look at Ultima Online with nostalgia blinders and think they can replicate it in 2020, things changed from then ... people changed from those times, for every "Legendary PvPer that I furious masturbate every thing to" there are thousands of griefers that just "do it for the Lulz", I remember a thing from BDO as a example ... speed hacks, before the NA/EU release those were not heard of but moment the game was released outside Korea people started working on how to hack the game, one thing they figured out was it was possible to make characters speed to so high you could not hit them and of course that was exactly what happened and quickly patched. This are the people that want the "open world PvP can loot the corpse" and moment they start crack down on then or the game goes into its death spiral, they move on ... or they get bored and move to the next flavor of the month.

and it's fucking dead because just like arena shooters, everyone who claims to want one doesn't play them when they actually exist

I can see these people were very experienced with MMOs when they haven't foreseen that. Wow, it's almost as if this model is completely unsustainable as we've seen in many games before.
If we hadn't invented laws against "open world PvP" in the real world, and enforced them, we'd still be living in caves. Just take a look at Africa.

Well if you look at that subreddit (r/MMORPG) you can guess why despite crashing and burning there is always a few under development, there are too many people enamored with the concept that never pause to think why there is no "open world PvP" in real life or rather, we dont play MMOs to be subject to the same shit we take in real life.

They all have "solutions" that either been implemented with no real success or its not hard to find ways around then, I suspect most of those people are also Libertarians considering how disconnected they are ... or just stupid really considering they want Amazon to fund their sandpit, they all have some great dreams of how it would be just like the real world with a player based economy and such player driven stories ... I kinda blame EVE for that crap since people have very romantic ideas of how EVE big wars were despite pretty much everyone with a brain realizing it wont be Battle of Leyte Gulf but its playing EVE with a shitload of lag and its also why despite a lot of game trying to go into the whole "player driven narrative" none had any success, the whole "create your own fun" is for children that are in that age with everything is new and exciting.

In the end such "open world PvP" would have to be incredible complex mimicking real with playing have also to deal with consequences, the whole issue that they always ignore is there are no real consequences to PKing, especially for the PKer and none of those PvPers want then to exist, in fact they want the victim to suffer the most of the negative consequences losing their progress and that says all, a system as complex as it would have to be in order to work would have to offer such penalties that nobody would want to casual engage in such so ... it would not be fun so nobody dont want it to begin.
