Are there any good, recent-ish ones that can be played on PC?

My guess is "AIs cheat, the Internet lags horribly", rendering pure racing games rather stale. There's only so much you can do with this genre outside of "prettier graphics" before it turns into Mario Kart.

Funny you should ask, I've just recently been looking into this as I'd like to dip a toe in sim-racing.

Forza 6 Apex is free and in public beta right now, and the full series is coming to PC. Pretty good physics, game-y races (much shorter than real, AI is relatively easy to beat). Then there's Assetto Corsa, which has very good physics and more realistic races. And then there's Project Cars, which is also by all accounts pretty good.

The old stalwart iRacing is still soldiering along as well.

The newer ones -- Assetto Corsa and Project Cars at least -- feature extremely detailed, laser-scanned tracks, and the driving physics are getting impressively good also. Saw a YouTube while back where a competition sim-racer raced against a competition race car driver on the Nordschleife. The sim-racer won, but very very narrowly, and the real and sim cars' performance tracked each other quite closely.

Project Cars is decent if you are into semi sim racing
Assetto Corsa is amazing racing sim
iRacing is the racing sim
rFactor2 is pile of rubish but does provide some enjoyement

Only Project Cars has actual proper single player content.

still nothing beats Asseto Corsas racing f40. Just pure quality of sound and simulation:

I'm semi-planning to hold off until Oculus Rift support matures a bit. Then buy a rig good enough to drive it properly, with a proper wheel and pedals...

You can still play Grand Prix Legends.
I believe everything that came afterwards has been shit. There were some great mods for Nascar 2003 but they were all pulled for legal reasons (you can thank David Kaemmer himself for it).

Project: Eternity Wasteland 2 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath
I heared that Dirt Rally is also pretty good, one of the better rally games for years.

About 8 meters beneath sea level.
As a genre car games have been in an almost rpg's in the 2000's like slump. Almost, as there still are some decent games. Just not the amazing AAA stuff that Microprose and all used to bring.

Then again, people are still modding and updating Grand Prix Legends.

If you are looking for more arcade title, Wreckfest is in a pretty good stage by now.

Not a complete game yet, but perfectly playable.

wreckfest seems like will be a v.fun multiplayer racer

So semi on-topic, what is the title of the recent game that looks like Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge and Outrun ? I think it was in Greenlight or something.. someone posted a screenshot or two in the screenshot thread months ago...

I suck at racing sims, so I just stick to stuff like Wipeout.

The only one I know of is Horizon Chase, but that's mobile only for now.
