I just finished my first playthrough yesterday.
The things that I loved about it, I really loved. The things that I hated about it, I really hated.

Technically, the game is excellent. I never had one crash*. This is easily the best looking game that I have played to date. I was able to max out almost everything while maintaining smooth and consistent performance on a three year old GPU. It's hard to believe that they can squeeze so much detail out of aging hardware without any slowdowns, somehow they pulled it off. I think every other developer needs to learn something from this game, optimization matters.
*I did encounter one quest that bugged out to a black screen, it's a known issue that will no doubt be fixed in a patch. Compare this with how often most modern games bug out or crash, especially so soon after release.
The sound and music range from good to great. I've read some complaints about some of the voice acting, but I disagree. I thought that all of it was excellent.
I haven't read the novels, so speaking strictly as a fan of the games, the narrative makes sense and the characters are all believable and full of personality. The RP options are plentiful and well done.

Now we get to the gameplay mechanics which is where I really had a love/hate thing going on.
Alot of people are bitching about the combat difficulty and I was among them at the beginning until I figured out what the problem was. The problem isn't that the combat is too hard, it's that the controls are counterintuitive. For instance, one of my biggest gripes is the fact that you can't sidestep or simply move back without completely changing direction. The sticky targeting system would go from frustrating to manageable just by adding this ability. IMO this is a step backwards in that it feels like I'm playing a PS1 game. If they had left everything as is and simply added the ability to jump back without changing direction it would work wonders. Once I trained myself to think in terms of their controls instead of my instinct the game became much less frustrating, though I still had a nagging voice in the back of my head screaming "WHY?!!"
You can only drink potions in mediation, unfortunately most of the hard fights happen just before an unskippable cutscene*, so the only way that you know that you need to prepare with potions is after you reload after you have just had your ass handed to you because you were not properly prepared.
It's already been said, but I'll say it again: We already have toxicity to keep from spamming potions.
There's that voice again, "WHY?!!".
* Yes, they ARE unskippable, you can skip through scenes with dialogue, but others (tentacles anyone?)
are unskippable.
- Fuck OTE, but you can turn those off so I'll give them a pass on that.
- The minigames SUCK, of course most minigames suck so that's on par with everyone else. I was disappointed however that the one decent minigame from the first game (dice poker) was hit with the multiheaded dick of immersion, completely fucking it up in the process.
- I'm really sick of boss fights. Boss fights have become a worn out cliche that needs to die. Especially the "Whack/shoot the X" variety.
- The UI for anything but the HUD is an abomination. This could have been mitigated somewhat by allowing you to switch between screens without closing everything first.
- Doors suck, everyone knows why.
- You can jump and climb, but only where X marks the spot. Just like Alpha Protocol, lovely.

It looks like my dislikes outnumber my likes, but they really don't. It's just that my bitches stick out in my mind more. Overall, I think it's a great game but one that could have been so much better if some things had been done differently.
