Playing MMORPGs = earning gold = earning cash money
In game assets typically have a gold value, so they are also worth dollars.
Because our economy is based on complex financial shenanigans and sleight of hand, new financial instruments have to be created for this new digital asset class, so that "people" can trade them, otherwise economic opportunities will be lost.
For example, you can fractionalize your character's magic sword; breaking up ownership of it into multiple shares that could then be sold and traded on a secondary market. You could also borrow and lend against these assets.
"People" are pushing NFTs because they want their cut of the gold you are earning in online games.
