It's not a rumor at this point, Oblivion is basically guaranteed to happen, likely followed by Fallout 3 remaster a couple years down the line.

Nobody asked for some shitty Fallout 3 remaster.

Oblivion otoh is legendary, and supposedly being announced this month.

Nobody asked for your opinion either, and yet here it is, like a cold dog turd left on a european paved street.

I'll play both remasters, not that those games were great, but it's something. It was the early era of decline, before things plunged underwater and then sank into the Mariana trench.

Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Considered that if it happens it will probably be even worse than the original, I am now hyped for it and for its trainwreck capabilities.

This is old news as far as "rumors" go since Zenimax's title release schedule was leaked in September 2023.

As far as the dates go, they're obviously inaccurate. But I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Oblivion and FO3 remasters are guaranteed at this point. Whether or not they're gonna be slightly better or slightly worse than the fan-made mod projects though? is up for debate.

This game has not aged well, especially in comparison to Skyrim. They're going to have to fix a lot of shit (like that stupid fucking persuasion mini-game) for this thing not to look like total garbage.

A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Kingmaker Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I haven't yet gotten around to play the original version, in my books it's a new game. These development cycles are too fast.

having non moddable TES game is like eating a plain noodle, might be decent but never good

then the noodle is TESIV and you got a disaster

Yeah I guess it qualifies as legendary - after all, Oblivion is the root of modern mongrelized AAA slop. Maps filled with markers you go through like a checklist, locations you don't actually have to discover because your compass will always point out nearby points of interest. The copypasta formula of open world Ubisoft games was born from Oblivion.

It also popularized micro-DLCs with horse armor. Remember when people mocked horse armor DLC? Now it has become standard in the industry. Thanks, Oblivion! Truly a legendary game.

Naraya sorry but if you like Oblivion you are genuinely retarded and I wonder what you're even doing on RPG Codex. No other game had such a detrimental effect on the industry, we're still suffering from its influence today.

How would you improve Oblivion?
Reworking difficulty and loot seems like the most low hanging fruit. Outside of that you'd need massive reworks to really change anything.

The only thing that Oblivion does well is it's music.

They're stuck between a rock and a hard place in my opinion, gamers who are picking it up for the first time because they don't play older games probably won't be able to tolerate the jank that permeates all of its design but if they polish it too much it'll lose the eccentricity that fuels the nostalgia its long term fans have for it.

Basically everything needs to be overhauled. The level scaling, the dungeons so awful people assume they're procgen, the potato faces, follow the quest marker gameplay, the lame as fuck Fighters and Mages guilds, every city being a ghost town...

But you know what might be the worst thing about Oblivion? You never feel like you're learning about its setting. Everywhere you went in Morrowind, it felt like a real and cohesive place, and you were learning about it through interacting with people and doing quests. Oblivion instead is a theme park full of gimmicks. "This is the town where everyone is invisible." "This is the castle where a painting was stolen."

There's no delving into the culture or the politics or any kind of intrigue. The assassination of Uriel Septim should precipitate a lot of political maneuvering, different counts vying for control over the province and Empire, alliances being formed. Do something with the Nibenese vs Colovians (a cultural divide that is alluded to in a loading screen but literally never materializes in the game). It's just squandered opportunities all around.

The truth is that Oblivion is irredeemable garbage, just the setting and design of the world itself makes trying to fix issues like the level scaling problem pointless. An open world worth exploring requires gates to prevent you from going anywhere you want easily, cause otherwise the world becomes just settlements, dungeons and empty space in between. And Cyrodiil is deliberately designed to not have gates in it.
