So, I'm playing skald.
The maps, so far, aren't that ugly, and you forget about it really fast.
The characters, on the other hand, are well drawn, during cut-scenes and dialogs.

Combat system is decent so far but i just reached the second island map so don't take my word for it.

Story and skill use cut-scenes are well made and written and enhance the experience.
A lot.

Because the game really plays like alvora tactics (and the other ones from the same devs) but with a system closer to d&d and Skald is way better because of the fast paced story bits.
And the good writing, which is really rare in this day and age.

I completed the game half an hour ago. Wow, what a fucking finale. I felt there would not be a "they lived happily ever after" kind of ending, but didn't expect such a level of darkness.

Good job, High North Studios! You exceeded my expectations. Looking forward to what you're going to do with the setting.

A new generation of Ultima remakes is at hand: https://www.skaldrpg.com/2025/02/modding-now-on-main-branch/

Modding now on Main Branch!

Greetings all!

As most of you know, Skald modding has been in beta for PC on the “experimental branch” on Steam and GOG for the last couple of months!

Well, today we’re moving it to the main branch so it’ll be easier for everyone to enjoy the user-created content or even make their own!

The game is also coming ON SALE for a few days, so be sure to point friends, family and small children to our Steam or GOG page!

Start Brewing!

Skald user-created content is hosted on mod.io so find it there today! We already have a good handful of modules from some of our talented community creators!

To get started on downloading or creating mods, have a look at our tutorials (also on mod.io):

In particular, you may want to have look at the “How to play Mods” tutorial!

That’s it! I’m back to work at something I can’t say anything about (I’m super, SUPER serial) but I know you’ll love it!

To stay posted, be sure to follow the Skald Twitter, Bluesky and Discord if you haven’t already!

Keep being awesome and have a fantastic week!

AL

I really like the ending as well and think it perfectly fits what it was going for (the lovecraftian influences). I do wonder what a potential sequel is gonna be like story-wise though.

The Cabal might be one of the enemies, sure, but I'm curious what they do
with the 7-eyed Dragon vs. the Navigator conflict. And who won the struggle on the Outer Islands.

I didn't like the ending all too much, but as for potential sequals, I'd like a different unconnected story in the same setting. Bit like Dungeon Rats and AoD kinda deal. Could keep the lovecraft vibes even without the actors from this game.

They'd have to seriously revamp the combat model. It simply wasn't enough to support a combat heavy game like Dungeon Rats.

As for unconnected story - it seems the lovecraftian storyline was connected to the Outer Islands, due to the seven-eyed Dragon's attention. However, from the ending we know that for the rest of the empire, it was a pretty good and calm year. So I guess the rest of the world doesn't really have problems with cosmic horrors right now.

It matters not what transpires in lands beyond the scope of gameplay. This you will drill until it sticks.
