For those craving a first person dungeon crawler, Into the Dark has been released on Steam. No sale price on this one, so you're looking at the full release price of $24.99US. The offerings here are randomly generated dungeons and a hand crafted dungeon, real time combat with everything you'd typically expect, lots of character classes, and so on. The graphics aren't too shabby either. Here's the summary and trailer:

Action-Oriented Dungeon Crawler RPG
  • hand-designed 16-level Dungeon Campaign
  • Random Dungeon Generator
  • Level Editor to create your own dungeons
  • Plenty of Heroes and Pets to choose from
  • Fight hundreds of unique Monsters
  • Close combat (Dual Weapons, or Shield+Weapon)
  • Ranged combat (Bows and Crossbows)
  • Magic Spells
  • Rage Mode - Blood, Gibs and Gore
  • Explore Dungeons, Castles, Caverns, Pyramids and more

If you love other role-playing games like Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder and Legend of Grimrock, then you will love this game too! Compared to others, Into The Dark is more realistic and action oriented.

That Mimic couldn't hold it's excitement. I'm kind of confused on the "realistic" description when you have a sword in one hand and a staff in the other, roaming around a dungeon with doors to open, but it looks kind of fun.

I like the music and the female character's war cry after a critical hit.
I don't like seeing so many epic enemies and fighting them as if they were goblins:prosper:.

This would be awesome if it were turn based. Otherwise it looks like I could not play it more than a few minutes and stay engaged.

These two things go together well. If it were turn based, and you had those "bigger, badder" enemies where options came in to play, you have a much more stable alignment of bad ass monsters and the ability to deal with them tactically. Instead, you have these monsters running around and it looks like you're just click-click-click slapping them around like child's play.

The game seems to have an interesting aesthetic to it, it's very reminiscent of hand-drawn first person RPGs (the whole time I couldn't tell if the weapons were 3D or not). That spider especially, looks to have come straight out of The Quest (one of the best mobile RPGs).

The character selection screen with the fast moving UI made me dizzy in 5 seconds. Can't stand UI animation like that, first thing I do in any app/device is turn off all animations completely.

Gameplay looks like some FPS that happens to take place in a dungeon. Too hyperactive, too fast, there's no depth to it.

Overall, a missed opportunity.
