The Iron Tower boys have been doing some serious bug squashing since the original release of the Age of Decadence combat beta and now have a new version to show for it. Head here for the demo download links and here for the list of fixed issues. Wow, nothing for years and suddenly two demos? AoD development is getting better by the day.

The end is the best about the whole demo...

Anyway, still contains an exploit/bug: If you use whirlwind attack and finish your round, you can conter-attack diagonal attacks with an one-handed weapon.

Didn't notice anything else apart from weird loading-screen mumbo-jumbo.

Why was the first demo even buggy? Hasn't this demo been in development for like a year now?
It ran fine on their and on testers' systems, and they did a lot of last minute changes (included sounds and other stuff) just before the Christmas deadline which they wanted to meet.

Windows 7 DID just come out, you know. Hard to test on a newer OS if you're not a big name dev company and the whatnot. Just sayin' is all.

Compatibility testing is the huge, horrible whore that takes up so much time in the endgame of PC game development. It always seems too long but is NEVER EVER LONG ENOUGH.

Nah, what you do is js you release the"damn combat beta already" :) like IT did so you get live field testing on thousands of different machines for free.
And all that feedback :)

Except that Microsoft has always been open to software developers delivering beta and release candidates through their MSDN channel so they could perfect their software compatiblity and hardware drivers BEFORE the OS gets out in the wild.

Windows 7 may just have come out but obviously software developers have not been waiting for it to be out or we wouldn't even have drivers for our hardware.

Is the new version any faster?

The original was unplayable on my ati x1200 equipped laptop. I wish there would be at least some kind of ultra-low-quality setting for low end machines as my laptop is my main gaming rig these days (I'm not going to update it as long as it runs dosbox and kotc well).

You can try to pick a video more that is better supported by your drivers, lower shadows quality (it's still slider-to-the-right position  ), and try "useTriangles trick", described in the readme. Some people gain a significant FPS boost that way.

There are a lot more options in the prefs file that can be changed for performance gains. After playing with the file a bit (actually just turning a bunch of shit off) I was able to get rather smooth gameplay on my crappy Presario laptop Under Wine using the open source drivers (which are roughly 50% slower than the proprietary blobs).

Specs. for reference

Sempron 2GHz
2GB DDR RAM
Radeon Xpress 200M

No worki, it still runs at under ~10 fps.

That's promising, care to share some settings?

Suddenly, I'm concerned that the released game will be just as buggy as the demo. Perhaps enlarging the circle of beta players, on the basis of varied hardware, is in order?

Most certainly, and no more rushed releases to meet a deadline, implementing things in the last second. We will only get one chance to make a good first impression with the game.

The game runs fine until my character enters a building. Then it slows down drastically.

Rename this newspost to "AOD Combat Demo: Extended Edition!".
And then bash ITS for releasing a patch.

That's because a huge number of polies get rendered when you enter the buildings.
