Seeing the comments here about how absurd, stupid, and over the top recent BioWare and other games are, I sometimes wonder why I don't play just to join in on everybody raging at the so-bad-its-good stuff of these games.

So curiously, everything mainstream released post-2008: worth it for the lulz, or generally more stupid and irritating than unintentionally funny?

When you see that bug-eyed assassin NPC from ME2 kiss a woman in a romantic way, do you find it cringeworthy and bad, or do you find it sidesplittingly hilarious?

Can you ironically enjoy a film for 2 hours?

Could you then ironically enjoy a console game for 30 hours?

DA/ME2/FO3 are fun for the first few hours. Then you realize how empty and soulless they are. I think it's the lack of soul that really has destroyed the modern RPG. Everything seems like it was designed by a focus group.

I don't regret playing ME. It was so corny and bad, it was good.

I regret playing DAO. It's just plain bad.

I don't think you're missing anything that makes it worthwhile. Some of the games have benefited from an active modding community. Get them for the same reason that you might go see a play by an amateur dramatic society if you lived in a small town - because you like that medium of entertainment and there's fuck all else available. If you've played the oldies to death, then sure you're not going die by playing a bad game. Just start from 08 and get them from the budget bin - don't pay a price that you'd reserve for games that you'd want a long-term obsession over.

Thing is, the reason why so many codexers bitch about these games is that they DO play them and for the most part were entertained for the first few hours before the flaws started to pile up. Quite a few are enjoyable for a few hours, but very few are worth finishing. If you're happy to pick up a game that will entertain for a few hours and then abandon, you'll be fine.

Edit: I'd say once more that Bioware is nowhere near Bethesda scales of crappiness. Plenty of folk here had ME and ME2 as guilty pleasures, although they're hardly games that you'll be obsessed to finish (I haven't actually played ME2 for that matter). And VD seemed to like DA, though I think he's in the minority (could have been a guilty pleasure, but had WAY too much filler combat for that). If you play ME (ME1 should be absurdly cheap by now) pick the female shephard and all the renegade dialogue options for about a +50% game quality improvement.

If you want to play a game just so you can hate it with your friends on your internet club, you're probably better off saving money/bandwidth.

Mass Effect 2 is a great third person shooter, like Gears except very well presented and less gay. Extreme Shepard is pretty funny at some points but you've probably already seen everything there is to see on youtube or something. Dragon Age is dull, painfully generic and repetitive horse shit.

Also, Fallout New vegas is probably going to be pretty good.

Console RPGs haven't been good in ages, and weren't even that great at their peak. The most notable ones are obscure Japanese tactical games, the most hardcore of which don't even get translated.

The memes stand up on their own and are generally self explanatory.

Well, no.

But there's the possibility of them being average/slightly above average games with just an absurdist style that you can still find amusing.

The concept of turning RPGs into dating simulators is so novel!

ME2 is better than ME1 in all aspects (foremost, the shooting is actually fun)

It's only fun if you've never played a proper shooter in your life.

"So-bad-its-good" is quite the accurate descriptor for alot of the renegade choices.

There are just much better games to (re)play then wasting time on current Bioware games, I still feel abused after NWN OC. Anyway, seeing such mega retarded stuff like romances in ME2 is enough for me to just skip it. I know, they are optional but I still... after seeing one of them *shivers*

No, you're not missing anything. I Played ME2, boxes, boxes everywhere, lame shooting parts, got bored half way through, uninstalled in disgust. Tried Dragon Age, My fist thought: "Those fucking emo apes!", and the PC's dialogues, uninstalled in disgust again.

i've been thinking about getting FO3: GOTY for the PS3 recently. PS3 games are really expensive and most of the titles are shit (FPS/God-of-War look-a-likes), so i'm thinking of giving it a try, regardless of how shitty the writing is. i wonder if it's worth it? i just want to shoot moira and kill shit.
It's true that there are very few decent games for PS3, but still it doesn't make F3 worth buying.

As for Bioware - I tried most of their games released after NWN for a few hours, never finished one and thus am 100% certain that I'm not missing out on anything (bar perhaps some NWN addons that are supposedly decent). I still say - fuck that shit.

What OldManPaco said. I actually liked Dragon Age when I tried it for, like, eight hours or so, until after the big battle thing in the tower. When I tried to go back and actually play through, what? Fourty hours of the stuff? More, considering i had been like eight hours to finish the prologue? I just unistalled it and went to play something else, full of pew pew and platforms and personality.

So you aren't missing nothing, really, other than if you don't really mind to download a game knowing you will never finish it and play it for whatever length of time it goes for you before you lose interest and go do something else.

ME1/2 are good for what they are: dumbed down console shooters with some lulzy dialog. Its short and sweet so at least you don't have to dick around with stupid stuff too much.

DA is pretty much every shitty MMO with repetitive combat rolled up into a single easy to hate game. The plot and C&C isn't well thought out and will make you facepalm every once in a while, though not nearly Bethesda bad. Even if it was good, you wouldn't want to play it because the combat is about 10x worse then arcanum and there is 10x as much of it.

Thankfully, since they consist mostly of mindless grinding.

Missing out makes it sound like you should play it or your gamelife will be incomplete. I think thats a ridiculous viewpoint.

You should just wonder : will i enjoy playing some of these games? It is perfectly possible to enjoy games that are not masterpieces, and why else would you play games then for your enjoyment?

I don't play them for their intellectual baggage anyway because there is none to be found, fun should be the only factor when choosing a game to be played. And that's why people play RPG's or any other game for that matter, that are not really masterpieces of the genre.
