Am I naive to think AP will succeed?

holy shit... I have a feeling that this will be a commercially succesful game... by Obsidian... have I gone mad? The developers best known as Bioware Junior, and the never ending sequel in space? It has bewbz, gunz, and a 007 spy who looks like Matt Damon as a main character with kung-fu action. The sex cards of The Witcher practically sold a few hundred thousand copies on their own. How incompetent would this promotion have to be to NOT be successful?

Bloodlines had boobs, guns and emo/goth music, but it still sold like shit.

It's all about marketing.

My only hope is that Obsidian focuses everything they have on bugtesting AND optimizing. Good optimizing = much more sales as it can run on old computers. (I want to play this NOW)

I only hope there is a mission wherre you go into Pakistan! :)

Insert clever insult here
But Merilinda will bitch&moan about the lack of female protagonist, causing sales to plummet.

Also, why does google search on "alpha protocol" give me this pic:

I doubt it will succeed. Obsidian are an unknown studio to the mainstream. Even KOTOR 2, a sequel to a mainstream game, didn't sell near any thing like its predecessor.

If Obsidian does a Bethesda and somehow manages to make AP into another Oblivion/Fallout 3, then maybe. Bethesda are the only western RPG developer besides Bioware to get into the mainstream, and Bioware only did it because of KOTOR. I don't know why Oblivion sold so well, so Bethesda's popularity is a mystery to me. Fallout 3 is a good game but Oblivion is shit, and the latter game is what won Bethesda their fanbase.

Obsidian has a fanbase in the RPG community, but not in the mainstream - and the mainstream decide what is a hit. Sega are looking for a hit.

Nah, I think it will get lots of sales. There's a rather big hypecampaign going on for this game, and I suppose the hundreds of Mass Effect lovers will blitzkrieg the shops to get it, since every article says it's supposed to be 'similar to ME!!11'

Well it uses the same engine.

IMO if this doesn't work out they should try to reform troika studios and start work on a D&D4e game.

Being the first D&D4e game it will sell by the fucking TUN!

The engine used in every shooter since UT3 you mean? Damn, if they can compare AP to ME based on that, then maybe they can convince the mainstream that AP is highly tactical turn based game.

Regardless of whether AP sells or not, this fact here is simply not true. KOTOR2 has sold tremendously well.

How could an AP setting be interesting though? Obsidian are quite good at fantasy settings. PST or MotB level is out of the question, but AP could have bits in it about independents like the real life equivalents of the Blackwater private military company and, um... I don't know how it's possible to create an interesting real life setting.

Vampire Bloodlines was a more or less real life setting too, even though it was a bit over the top. But it worked.
And for AP, Obsidian already said they'll have plenty of cliches and over the top stuff that helps making AP shine, otherwise it would be just boring.
But heck, I'm glad they're doing something like AP. I get a bit tired of fantasy and Star Wars clones.

It looks like it might be fun, although I doubt it'll sate my urge for a real cRPG. But MCA is working on it, so I'll remain optimistic.

I'm totally cut off from the hypeosphere so I have no idea how the median gamer culture consumer is looking at it. My guess is that it's at like 0.2 Bioshocks on the Goddamn marketing cuntometer. Naively, I'm thinking modest but profitable.

It will flop. It will be compared to every contemporary game in a modern setting, regardless of genre. It will even be compared to TV shows. One review will say, it's a poor man's 24 with some trivial things like ar-pee-gee features; another will say it tries to mimic ME too hard in a contemporary setting but has nothing original because, well, it's a contemporary setting (not that I think so); another will say it falls flat on action compared to games like COD4 and whatnot. Hell, I won't be surprised if it gets compared even to adventure games and get called a poor adventure. Oh, shouldn't forget a F3 comparison. Now that Bethesda has finally done dialogue trees, the game will be accused of the same type of dialogue that was in ME. Flip flop.

AP will own. This is from the makers of the excellent MotB, so stop bitching and give Obsidian some kudos.

Yes, and awesome maker of KotOR2, NWN2 and SoZ.

R00fles!

Two of these are indeed awesome.
