Any good metroidvania recommendations?

Aeterna Noctis is a great game, it's a shame that it got blasted for its difficulty but to be fair the original mode is for masochist. The new easier mode strikes a great balance. Highly recommended.

8 Doors and Haiku are pretty good but simple metroidvanias for a semi quick fix. They are smaller games made with love.

The complaint about Aeterna Noctis seemed to be that the difficulty mainly came from demanding precision platforming which isn't something that people necessary expected from a game like that or that the devs communicated well enough prior to release (it definitely looked like another combat focused metroidvania in trailers).

Yup, it's definitely the platforming. Still, these days, a great game.

3 different characters with their own gameplay and strong visuals. Personally I'm not convinced this will work but I appreciate their attempt.

Axiom Verge 2 now on Steam. Most seem to think it's a downgrade.

I wasn't all that impressed with the original, totally overhyped.
Been playing through this, and it's an interesting blend of exploration in vehicle and on foot.

It has two sequels on steam but i haven't gotten to those yet.

Blaster Master Zero is a masterpiece. Everything a remake should be, plus a clever merging of the original Japanese story elements to the American ones.

Just finished getting the true ending in BM Zero, will get the sequel when it's on sale, which looks promising.

And likely will get Zero 3 along with it, which has a whip weapon to boot.

I didn't like Blaster Master Zero 2 as much. Instead of one big labyrinth, you travel to several different planetoids with smaller labyrinths, which makes it metroidvania-lite to me. Pretty lame.

Didn't care for the anime characters and cutscenes they put in either game. Firstly, the original NES/Famicom in-game art, as little as there was, was just fine. Second, to the extent that Blaster Master needed cutscenes and character portraits, which was not at all imo, it's not even a style of anime I like.

Besides those things, Zero 2 is worth a buy. Init Creates are surely masters of old-school 2D game design.

I bought Aeterna Noctis about a week ago and I've been immersed in it ever since. I can definitely see why people complained of the difficulty. I am playing on the hard mode and wow! There are some tough platforming and puzzles. I just finished the dream kingdom. That place was crazy! I had to use a guide to help complete it. Aeterna Noctis is amazing though. Its got great graphics/artwork and the gems you can find all do interesting things instead of just +5% damage. There are gems that slow down time after shooting an arrow and gems that give your sword a wave of darkness when you swing it. I love that, its way more fun to find these secret gems because they all do something interesting instead of just a numeric increase. And secrets, there are a ton! I am currently in No Man's Land at the end of the world which is a huge open area with tons of dragons and amazing artwork. I highly recommend this game.

How's death handled in this one? I have no problem playing a hard game, but usually what puts me off is replaying sections just to reach the spot you died, only to die again. I dropped Astalon, which was nice overall, because I couldn't restart every fucking time I died. Are there plenty of checkpoints?

There are checkpoints all over so you are never far from a checkpoint. However if you die due to a platforming death (like a spike trap or whatever) you will immediately spawn where you last jumped from with -1 health. So deaths and respawns are very quick. In fact there is an acheivement for 1000 deaths that I think I got after like 12 hours lol.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I am playing ender lolies and it's a blast so far. Difficulty ramp up in the middle, when i just thought the game is too easy. Excellent art and soundtrack, great level design/secrets and mostly cool boss battles

Thanks for the info about Aeterna Noctis, welly321. I came here today to ask somebody about it, and bam - your post is the 1st "new" one.

Also: checked the video Valestein posted and damn, it looks like HK influenced the genre heavily - everyone is making HK clones now.

A tale as old as gaming itself, remember all the Doom clones and Street Fighter 2 knock offs from way back when?
